How to Deal with Mediocrity at Work

Mediocrity at work is a topic that many of my clients want me to cover during their training sessions.  Are you a President or Leader of your company who wants to eradicate mediocrity at work?  Great!  This article and video will provide a simple exercise that you can share with your team.

A new work reality is that companies reward employees for their value and not just for the amount of time that they are at the company.  This was normal years ago.  Your organization may still reward mediocre employees.

The video below may help you discover how to eradicate this kind of behavior so that you can reward the stars and high productive employees.

The best and brightest places to work know that adding value is more important then just putting in the time.  I get into heated discussions about this topic from those who don’t agree with this New Work Reality.

An exercise for Leaders to Use to deal with mediocrity at work

I use this activity during my Shift Happens:  Thriving in Change Programs.  I ask the audience to select a partner and share why the company should keep them.  Both partners respond by answering the question.

What happens after this exercise?

The answers always amaze me because there are still people who think that they deserve a raise just because they have been a loyal employee.  Adding value to the company counts…not longevity!  This exercise gives leaders an opportunity to address mediocrity at work.

What Leaders can do to reduce mediocrity at work

  • Be very clear about expectations concerning productivity.
  • When employees slack off, let them know the consequences.
  • Reward the high producing individuals to keep them motivated.
  • Use the above exercise to start this important dialog.

Mentoring Programs Produce Great Outcomes

Does your company believe in mentoring new employees or people who want to develop their leadership skills?

This article will show you why mentoring is a great way to produce great outcomes and increase your bottom line.

This is a perfect topic since January is National Mentoring Month.

We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. – Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of United Kingdom

Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction. – John Crawford Crosby, American Politician

Research on Mentoring from The American Society for Training and Development

  • Training alone increased manager productivity by 24%
  • Mentoring combined with coaching and training increased productivity by 88%

National Poll Conducted by AOL Time Warner Foundation

  • 57 million adults would consider some form of mentoring
  • 99% of individuals already in a formal mentoring relationship would recommend mentoring to others

Joyce’s Research

  • My clients express that mentoring programs keep their star employees from leaving the company
  • These employees learn from the best and brightest in the company
  • All mentees are encouraged to change mentors if and when they feel the relationship is not helpful

Do you want to figure out how to change a bullying environment?
Does your company allow bullies to rule the board room?Do you want to find out more about bullies?

If so, this blog is for you!  Please watch the video below.

How to Start Changing a Bullying Environment

  • Create an anti-bullying policy
  • Define bullying and declare it unacceptable
  • Make enforcement procedures
  • Education and training are critical
  • Start documenting adverse impact
  • Most bullies would stop if the rules change and bullying was punished

Bullying is Unreported

  • 40% of targets never tell their employers
  • Bullying is erroneously branded as conflict or difference in personality sytles
  • Bullying is a form of VIOLENCE

Starting a Bully Behavior Framework

  • Single unprofessional incident:  There needs to be an informal intervention over coffee stating options for positive communication
  • Level 1:  Apparent pattern…Inform the bully that you will start documenting the behavior
  • Level 2:  Authority Intervention…Be supportive and express clear expectations about expected change
  • Level 3:  Disciplinary Intervention…If there is no change be clear about the company’s rules about discipline and take immediate action

When You Work With a Jerk Story #4

conflict frustrated lady putting paper to her headHave you ever worked in an environment that seemed more like high school…with bullies, rolling eyes, gossip mongers, and mean kids? I help my clients turn their toxic environment around and help them feel comfortable during tough conversations.  This post describes an email that I received from one of my loyal readers after he read several of the past posts on working with a jerk.  I did not make this up!  Names were changed to protect the innocent. 🙂

Todd’s Story
Todd is a sales rep for a mid sized firm.  He received a promotion for selling the most products in the company for the first quarter.  The leaders wrote Todd’s name on a huge recognition board in the lunch room.  Can you guess what happened next?  If you guessed that someone erased Todd’s name from the board…you are correct!  The horrific part is that no one at Todd’s firm addressed this mean spirited act.

What Would You Do if You Were Todd’s Boss?
Click HERE to send me your ideas on what you would do.  By now, you can probably predict what I would suggest.  The leaders need to call an all employee meeting to address the negative behavior.  This cannot be tolerated because the culture needs to be positive and the team needs to support each other.  I hear many horror stories on negativity that is allowed in the workplace.  Leaders don’t always know how to break this cycle.  A negative culture needs to be addressed with either training on communication or conflict.
