5 Easy Secrets to Coach Your Team: Part 1

Do you want to learn a powerful secret from my team coaching toolbox?  If so, you are in the right place:  Create Your Team’s Code of Conduct.

This is part 1 of a 5-part series on creating your code of conduct.
Make sure and look for parts 2-5 in the next few blog posts.

This article contains an exciting exercise that I use in my training sessions on Resolving Conflict and Employee Engagement.  Clients enjoy using this strategy.  They implement the ideas during and after the session.  I hope that you see the value of using this powerful training secret.  It can help you reduce conflict in the workplace and improve your working condition.

You may be asking yourself, “What is a code of conduct?”  A code of conduct is a powerful set of rules that govern the internal behavior of any team.

Team Coaching Secret #1:  Strategies to use a Code of Conduct

  • The rules are made by the team.code of conduct |team coaching
  • Team members are willing to stand and defend the code.
  • Each team member is personally responsible and accountable for his or her behavior.
  • It allows everyone to do their best work.
  • Everyone must play by the same rules.
  • The team agrees to put in the time and energy – not just show up for work.
  • Everyone helps finds the unique talents of team members.

Thoughts from Joyce

Here are examples of my client’s code of conduct that we created together:

  • Everyone needs to come to the meeting on time.
  • No side conversations during the meeting.
  • Cell phones are turned off.
  • Everyone needs to participate.
  • The team supports members when harassment occurs and confronts bullies and other difficult people.

The idea is for the entire team to come up with its own code.  Leaders can’t persuade others what direction to take.  I’ve seen miracles happen when this exercise is done right.  The team can change the code to fine-tune their goals.

I find that clients get better results when they have a coach help them create the code of conduct so leaders and team members are equal during this strategy session. It doesn’t take long to do this because I’ve got my secret sauce when it comes to team coaching. Just saying! 😉

Watch Oceans 11 to Learn Team-Building Strategies

You will learn all about team-building strategies after watching the movie Oceans 11.  A good hacker, a loose cannon, a suave smooth-talker, a pickpocket, a killer martial arts…team building strategies
Ok so not every team is as exciting as a heist movie rat pack, but you can get pretty close with these ideas.

Have you ever wondered why certain teams succeed?
Changing your team’s status quo is a huge part of the equation.

If you don’t embrace new concepts, your team will become less effective at preventing serious problems, responding quickly to issues as they arise, and providing innovative strategies for increased productivity.

Team Building Strategy #1:  A good team consists of 6 aspects

1. Goal clarity

2. Strong relationships

3. Healthy conflict management

4. Clear role clarity and expectations

5. Procedures that encourage productivity

6. The energy that exists within the team

All 6 of these aspects need to be part of a successful team.

Team Building Strategy #2:  Ask your team for input

I suggest that you take an informal survey by asking your team which aspect is your team’s strength and which one is your team’s weakness.
Make a list of the 6 team-building strategies above and ask your team to rate each one on how they see your team. This simple survey is a great start for some interesting discussions on how to make your team even stronger.  It’s an asset for any leader to listen to the needs and opinions of the entire team.

The five accountability strategies below will get you started.  There will be more strategies in the next few blog posts.

It’s time to change a negative culture now!  Share these next blogs with your team to see where your gaps are to change a blaming environment where people point fingers to a culture of team problem-solving.

Accountability Strategy #2: Understanding the Old Definition of Accountability

Ask your team for its own definition of accountability.  This is a great step to know the action steps your team needs to take to move forward.

No More Food Fights! Team Strategies

get new employees

Are you tired of employees or co-workers complaining about each other?

Do you want to develop an environment of Esprit de Corps where people get along and RESPECT in the workplace is part of your culture?
Search my previous blog posts on “conflict in the workplace” where you will find tips on how to remove barriers and build strong teams.

Now that your team is removing obstacles, the following tips will help build a positive environment.

Team Strategies #1: Esprit de Corps team strategies | repair generational conflict

  • Each person is committed to each others’ success
  • The team supports each other during up and down times
  • The team does whatever it takes to succeed

Team Strategies # 2:  Know the Strengths and Weakness of Each Team Member

There are numerous communication/team assessments on the market.  My clients are always fascinated with the results of Inscape’s DISC Workplace Profile. My group engagement skills help each team member interpret and apply the DISC assessment to improve team communication.

Teams learn the following information after taking the DISC:

  • How to reduce stress/tension with team members who are different than you
  • Create respectful ways to communicate with direct reports, colleagues, and leadership
  • Know your team’s tendencies, work preferences, and desired environment
  • Change, “Why does this person do that?  It’s so irritating!” to “I now understand why this person acts like this and I will figure out how to respond in a productive way.”
  • Take your professional development to a higher level through communication empowerment
