Growth-Minded People Rock!

growth-minded people

Growth-minded people understand the necessity of falling down and getting up to move forward. I’ve already written about a speech when over 3000 people walked out of one of my speeches during a high point of my career.  I will reshare that story with you next week.  Not my favorite story for sure.  It’s important to dig deep when we fall to learn from the situation.  I learned – BIG TIME! 🙂

Please share a time when you learned from a situation when you stumbled – yet got up to move forward.

Reflection is so important and growth-minded people understand how to pick themselves up not play the victim {at least not for long}.  Fixed-minded people dwell on the mistake or failure and stay stuck longer.

Let’s start a great discussion in the comment section so we can feel positive about ourselves!  We need to do this more than ever these days.

During my membership meetings {Kick Conflict to the Curb Ninjas}, we start each session by sharing good things that happened during the week. This paves the way to then discuss our communication challenges.

It’s natural to bring up negative situations first. We need to force ourselves at times to change this mindset to look at the good things in our life! 🙂

Let’s Stay Connected

Please share your thoughts about this week’s post.

We are all Change Masters During These Crazy Times!

favorite motivational quote | change masters

I recently saw this powerful quote by Mary Engelbreit, Author, and Artist.  I knew I had to make a poster for you!  We are ALL change masters these days. We don’t like it that our lives have been turned upside down. Like anything else in life, we have a choice on how we react to the changes. Some of my clients are glued to the tv or Alexa and all the negativity is affecting their mental state, big time.

We get so caught up in this negativity at times and we just don’t see that we are change masters. We can wallow in our fear or do something about it. Some of my clients decided that they wanted to give back and help others who are less fortunate than they are at this point in their life. Others have decided to take online classes or some other professional development project.

Joyce, What Did You Do to Become a Change Master?

In March we all knew that we were in something dangerous. We didn’t know at that time all the ramifications. A couple of online classes literally fell in my lap in March and opportunities are opening up like never before. The only reason is that I changed my outlook and attitude. I am still informed of what’s going on in our country and the world. I made an executive decision to jump right into new water without the usual planning that I do.  My focus was as strong as it could be and all doubt and fear disappeared. I knew I needed to do something different.

My clients enjoy hearing that they don’t have to be so down and out. We explore options for professional growth projects, new exercise programs, family activities to break the boring routines or anything to change the closed mindset. It isn’t easy to do unless we are fortunate to have friends, family, colleagues, and coaches 🙂 for the needed support.

How are you a Change Master?

  • Please share how you have become a change master during this pandemic.
  • How did you change fear into finding opportunities?
  • What small steps did you take?
  • Describe how you see colleagues, friends, or family members who are stuck in all the negativity.
  • Please comment on this post and share your experiences.

My cell is 248.325.8101. Reach out any way that you want and you know I will respond to each and every message I receive. This is the icing on the cake – communicating with my loyal readers.  It’s easy to make a comment right on this blog.

Here’s a Story About Why Laughter is so Important to This Change Master

A couple of colleagues recently criticized me when I encouraged laughter during my online course: Kick Conflict to the Curb.  They thought it was disrespectful because of what’s going on in the world today. That’s fine and they can lead their classes more seriously. I’m a change master and know how important it is to laugh even during the saddest moments.

Death and Dying was an interesting class that I took when I was studying for my Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling. The professor invited 2 families whose children had recently passed away. Both families told us that laugher helped them during the mourning process a bit easier. Of course, they talked about the child’s illness for a while.  They also shared all the funny episodes in their child’s life. This took some time for them to move from such loss to lighter moments.

This one class changed my outlook on life. Laughter and fun are both stress relievers. I’m so satisfied when clients change their outlook at their own speed and believe me, it’s more important now than ever before to take care of ourselves. Our mental states are being challenged daily. I’m here to support anyone you know who could benefit from working with me for only a few sessions.

Have a GREAT Week!

Three Important Executive Coaching Questions to Ask Yourself

Have you wondered what happens during an Executive Coaching session?
Do you want to move forward in your career?
Are you ready to ask yourself three questions to help you make important decisions in your life?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions you are in the right place.  🙂

My Executive Coaching clients work very hard at improving their career growth and leadership status.  Our conversations on the phone are action packed when they share what worked since our last session and what still needs to be resolved.  Together we focus on specific goals and action plans.  I’m there to hold clients accountable and the results are apparent.  The next few articles will give you a glimpse of how Executive Coaching works.

Executive Coaching Question #1:  What do you need to change?

Executive Coaching | Joyce Weiss

It could be a shorter commute to work or starting a new exercise routine.  Maybe there are conflicts between your direct reports that never seem to get resolved.  The main idea is to ask yourself what parts of your life need changing.  Executive Coaching includes discussing areas in my clients’ life and career.  There are no limitations and most of these topics are connected.  The main idea is to discover the change that needs to be made.

Executive Coaching Question #2:  What do you need to keep?

Family, vacations, exercise, continuing education, or ongoing relationship building are examples of areas in our life that we want and need to keep.  These are parts of our life that are working well.  We need to recognize them in order to appreciate the positives. At times we take them for granted and we need friendly reminders to see the good that is in front of us.

Executive Coaching Question #3:  What do you need to let go of in order to move forward?

This question isn’t an easy one to resolve.  There are so many issues in our life that we hang on to because they have become our part of our identity.    Examples are unresolved issues with our family, internal fights at work, watching too much TV at night and not reading as much as you want, being realistic that the commute to work is horrific.  You get the idea.  This is where an executive coach comes in handy because we help you discover options that you didn’t see before.

One of my clients never had time to read when she got home from work.  She had the following routine – visit with her family, eat dinner, and watch two hours of TV before going to bed.  She had several books on her kindle and never had time to read them.  We found the perfect solution.  Instead of watching the news in the morning during her workouts, she watches her TV programs while she exercises at home.  She now has time to read during the evening because she is caught up with some of her favorite programs during her exercise routine.  Easy Peasy.

Now for some reality

An important part of the process is that clients come up with their own answers once they are asked key questions. It’s like magic.  They thank the coach yet the clients are the ones who come up with the good stuff!  Executive Coaching is extremely rewarding because most clients work with me for a few months or less – depending on how many changes they want to make in their life.

So here is your homework.  Ask yourself these three questions to see where you are in your personal or professional journey.

  1. What do you need to change?
  2. What do you need to keep?
  3. What do you need to let go of?

How to Deal with Mediocrity at Work

Mediocrity at work is a topic that many of my clients want me to cover during their training sessions.  Are you a President or Leader of your company who wants to eradicate mediocrity at work?  Great!  This article and video will provide a simple exercise that you can share with your team.

A new work reality is that companies reward employees for their value and not just for the amount of time that they are at the company.  This was normal years ago.  Your organization may still reward mediocre employees.

The video below may help you discover how to eradicate this kind of behavior so that you can reward the stars and high productive employees.

The best and brightest places to work know that adding value is more important then just putting in the time.  I get into heated discussions about this topic from those who don’t agree with this New Work Reality.

An exercise for Leaders to Use to deal with mediocrity at work

I use this activity during my Shift Happens:  Thriving in Change Programs.  I ask the audience to select a partner and share why the company should keep them.  Both partners respond by answering the question.

What happens after this exercise?

The answers always amaze me because there are still people who think that they deserve a raise just because they have been a loyal employee.  Adding value to the company counts…not longevity!  This exercise gives leaders an opportunity to address mediocrity at work.

What Leaders can do to reduce mediocrity at work

  • Be very clear about expectations concerning productivity.
  • When employees slack off, let them know the consequences.
  • Reward the high producing individuals to keep them motivated.
  • Use the above exercise to start this important dialog.

I want to hear from you!
