Watch Oceans 11 to Learn Team-Building Strategies

You will learn all about team-building strategies after watching the movie Oceans 11.  A good hacker, a loose cannon, a suave smooth-talker, a pickpocket, a killer martial arts…team building strategies
Ok so not every team is as exciting as a heist movie rat pack, but you can get pretty close with these ideas.

Have you ever wondered why certain teams succeed?
Changing your team’s status quo is a huge part of the equation.

If you don’t embrace new concepts, your team will become less effective at preventing serious problems, responding quickly to issues as they arise, and providing innovative strategies for increased productivity.

Team Building Strategy #1:  A good team consists of 6 aspects

1. Goal clarity

2. Strong relationships

3. Healthy conflict management

4. Clear role clarity and expectations

5. Procedures that encourage productivity

6. The energy that exists within the team

All 6 of these aspects need to be part of a successful team.

Team Building Strategy #2:  Ask your team for input

I suggest that you take an informal survey by asking your team which aspect is your team’s strength and which one is your team’s weakness.
Make a list of the 6 team-building strategies above and ask your team to rate each one on how they see your team. This simple survey is a great start for some interesting discussions on how to make your team even stronger.  It’s an asset for any leader to listen to the needs and opinions of the entire team.

Does Your Team Show Respect in the Workplace?

Respect in the workplace is a topic that needs to be addressed due to so many bullies and negative people harassing others.

Does your team show respect in the workplace?

  • If you answer, “NO”, this article will give you some ideas.
  • If you answer, “YES”, please send me what is working for your team!

Respect is critical to have a productive and cohesive team.  Many of my clients ask for support when their team is sarcastic, negative or even silent with each other.

This article describes 3 Strategies to help you address how you can communicate with those who are disrespectful of others on your team.

Strategy #1 to ensure that your team shows respect in the workplace:  Discuss your concerns

Speak directly to your team either when they are all together or individually.  This is one of the toughest things for many people to do.
Start out by making the environment safe by giving an example of their productive projects or successful customers service story.

Strategy #2 to ensure that your team shows respect in the workplace: Setting boundaries

  • This step may be difficult for leaders who don’t like conflict.  It may be hard, but it’s necessary to have these tough conversations.
  • Share your frustration or concern about their sarcasm or negativity and how it impacts the team and morale.
  • Give them time to discuss what is on their mind.
  • Make sure that you set boundaries on how your team shares this feedback.
  • Act as a coach to ensure that the session does not turn into a complaint fest!

Strategy #3 to ensure that your team shows respect in the workplace:  4 tips to keep you sane

When you’re practicing Be Direct with Respect® and a coworker is not communicating in a productive way, just remember:

  1. Don’t take it personally if someone verbally attacks you.
  2. Don’t make assumptions.  Once your team feels heard, there will be better communication and no more mind reading.
  3. Do have the courage to ask and express what you want – even if it is difficult.
  4. Speak with integrity.  You are concerned about the success of the team and not finger pointing.

Discover My Proven & Powerful Team Coaching Secret

Do you want to learn a powerful secret from my team coaching tool box?  If so you are in the right place:  Create Your Team’s Code of Honor.

This article contains an exciting exercise that I use in my training sessions on Resolving Conflict and Employee Engagement.  Clients enjoy using this strategy.  They implement the ideas during and after the session.  I hope that you see the value by using this powerful training secret.  It can help you reduce conflict in the workplace and improve your working condition.

You may be asking yourself, “What is a code of honor?”  A code of honor is a powerful set of rules that govern the internal behavior of any team.

Team Coaching Secret #1:  Strategies to use a Code of Honor

  • The rules are made by the team
  • Team members are willing to stand and defend the code
  • Each team member is personally responsible and accountable for his or her behavior
  • It allows everyone to do their best work
  • Everyone has to play by the same rules
  • Everyone agrees to put in the time and energy – not just show up for work
  • The team helps finds unique talents of other team members

Team Coaching Secret #2:  The Team Will Not Be Happy All of the Time

  • At times team members will be put on the spot
  • Confrontation is part of the Code of Honor
  • The code will protect everyone on the team from abuse as long as bold honesty, accountability, and support exit.

Team Coaching #3:  Priorities When Using A Code of Honor

  • The code and mission come first
  • The needs of the team come second
  • The needs of the individual come third – it’s not all about you!
Good luck with this one if you have a narcissist on your team.

Team Coaching Secret #4:  The Code of Honor is the Police Officer

You may have to have the following conversation when a team member breaks the code:  “This is not about me attacking you. This is about following the code. We all agreed upon the code. I’m uncomfortable doing this yet I need to speak to you since it will benefit all of us. It is not about being mean or blaming you. It is about sticking to what we decided to do.”

Team Coaching Secret #5:  What to do When You or Someone Else Breaks the Code

  • Take a deep breath
  • Don’t take it personally
  • Acknowledge the person
  • Listen without interrupting If you made a mistake admit it
  • Ask the person how to make it right

 Thoughts from Joyce

Examples of code of honors are the following:

  • Everyone come to the meeting on time
  • No side conversations during the meeting
  • Cell phones are turned off
  • Everyone needs to participate
  • The team supports members when harassment occurs and confronts the bully

The idea is for the entire team to come up with it’s own code.  Leaders can’t persuade others what direction to take.  I’ve seen miracles happen when this exercise is done right.  The team can change the code to fine tune their goals.

Top Tips on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists

Many of you already know that I write and speak about Tips on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists.  The articles following the video consist of 3 previous posts with strategies on dealing with Narcissists.  The video below will give you a new in site on this difficult person.

Tip #1 on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists

Be prepared to be thrown under the bus when dealing with Narcissists.  You read this right!  They are great at deflecting any responsibility especially when someone confronts them.  Remember the Narcissist is like a 2-year old who has a tantrum or blames someone else when others show dissatisfaction with him or her.  Protect yourself or support others who may be attacked by this difficult person.  Don’t take the conversation with the Narcissist personal.  This idea is so hard to follow because Narcissists are infuriating to work or live with.  You may not change the results when you have an interaction with the Narcissist BUT you will retain self-respect when you do your best NOT to get pulled into their web.

Tip #2 on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists:  What Happens When you Work with a Narcissist?

This article describes the Personality of the Narcissist.

Tip #3 on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists:  Gain Control When Working with a Narcissist

This article gives you strategies on gaining control with Narcissists in your life.

Joyce’s Thoughts on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists

I hear many of you describe how infuriating it is to work or live with a Narcissist.  I am in the process of researching this personality disorder even deeper to give you more strategies.  Remember to use the GAP technique (do a search on my blog for many articles on this important skill).  Take a step back when a Narcissist tries to attack you or pull you into their web.  Decide how you want to respond to this person.  I find that the GAP has saved me many times and it gets me in trouble when I don’t use it! 🙂  You don’t need to say anything, you can change the conversation or you may want to have an adult conversation with him or her.  The main idea is to decide what you want to say or not say.  You will thank me when you use the GAP.

If so, this blog is for you!  Please watch the video below.

How to Start Changing a Bullying Environment

  • Create an anti-bullying policy
  • Define bullying and declare it unacceptable
  • Make enforcement procedures
  • Education and training are critical

  • Most bullies would stop if the rules change and bullying was punished

Bullying is Unreported

  • 40% of targets never tell their employers
  • Bullying is erroneously branded as conflict or difference in personality sytles
  • Bullying is a form of VIOLENCE

Starting a Bully Behavior Framework
