My Blueprint for Conflict: The Power of “What Don’t I Know?”

  • Are you ready to discover my blueprint for conflict?
  • Did you ever ask yourself: “Why didn’t I think of this? – after a stressful situation?
  • If so, you are in the right place.

Hi. I’m Joyce Weiss, Queen of Conflict Resolution & Communication Coach. I work with Department Managers, growth-minded individuals, and small groups tired of feeling invisible and ignored. And are ready to confidently use their voice without losing their cool. The result is their input is respected and recognized.

This post has a short video describing a turning point in my career – and created a blueprint for conflict.

The video below is a signature story of how I learned a valuable lesson during a challenging facilitation. Hopefully, you’ll see the value of using curiosity questions after you hear my story. 🙂

You’ll find details on how you can reduce your conflict using this powerful question in the content below. Enjoy, and please share your “aha moment” after watching the video and reading this post.

Conflicts, whether personal or professional, are an inevitable part of our lives. They arise from differences in perspectives, goals, and values or simply from miscommunication. But the real challenge isn’t the conflict itself but how we respond to it. Over the years, I’ve developed a blueprint for conflict that has revolutionized my approach to disagreements: the power of asking, “What don’t I know?”

1. Embracing Humility

The question “What don’t I know?” is rooted in humility. It acknowledges that our understanding is limited and that there’s always something more to learn. Before rushing to judgments or drawing conclusions, we must step back and realize that we might not have the full picture, just like I had to do during the frustrating facilitation that you saw in the video above.

2. Encouraging Curiosity

This question prompts us to become more curious. Instead of getting defensive, it encourages us to ask open-ended questions and actively listen to the other person’s perspective. How much conflict can be diffused when both parties feel heard and understood is amazing. “What don’t I know? – Makes the conversation
safer and less judgmental.

3. Building Bridges, Not Walls as your Blueprint for Conflict

The moment we admit our lack of knowledge, we become more approachable. This vulnerability can build bridges of understanding, fostering stronger, more resilient relationships. When both parties in a disagreement are willing to ask this question, it shifts the dynamic from adversarial to collaborative.

Parting Words from Joyce

Conflicts are unavoidable. But by integrating the question “What don’t I know?” into our approach, we can transform these moments of friction into opportunities for understanding, growth, and deeper connections. Next time you find yourself in a disagreement, pause and ask yourself this powerful question. The answers may surprise you, and the resolution will be more fruitful than imagined.

Can You Relate to This? It’s All About Self-Care

Happy 2023! I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to touch base about the importance of self-care in the workplace. We know that employees who are well-rested, healthy, and happy are more productive and engaged in their work. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize self-care in the workplace.

My question for you this week is – What about you? Are you making sure that you are balancing work and home? Or is balancing life and work out of whack for you?

Joyce Had a Breakthrough in her Career and Self-Care This Week

We had a flood in our home and had to repaint and recarpet the entire condo. My aha moment came when I looked at the empty walls. I started to breathe with a sigh of relief.

What in the world was going on? It finally dawned on me that the uncluttered walls symbolized my life. I was doing more work and enjoying it less. It was time to gain control again.

I asked myself three questions (the same conversations that I have with my clients) such as:
1. How can I unclutter my day?
2. What changes do I want to make to enjoy my life more?
3. Which tasks get in the way when balancing my ambition with my inner peace?

Next week I’ll share what I decided to change. This is a breakthrough that is changing my life.

How About You and Your Self-Care?

What about you? Please ask yourself the following three questions:

  1. How can I unclutter my day?
  2. What changes do I want to make to enjoy my life more?
  3. Which tasks get in the way when balancing my ambition with my inner peace?

I’m Interested in Hearing Your Thoughts

What do you want to change to balance your ambition with your inner peace?

Let’s work together to create a supportive and healthy work environment for all our employees – especially YOU!

One of the things that I love about my career is meeting new people who are open to change and improving their lives. Let’s set up a complementary laser-focused conversation to discover one thing you can do to unclutter your life.

If I can do this, anyone can! 🙂

If You Are a Perfectionist are You Ready to Stop Being Your Worse Enemy?

Hello to all you perfectionists out there! This is a nonjudgment zone because I’m a recovering perfectionist. 🙂
It’s a freeing moment when we finally realize that being real is less stressful. And gratifying.

Joyce’s Thoughts About Being a Perfectionist

Learning how to laugh at our mistakes is a great sign of progress.
The last couple of years has shown many of us how we need to let go of being perfect. We learned many new skills because we had numerous courses to take while hunkered down. I bet you made a few mistakes while trying out these new techniques.

Coaching Clients Discover How to Let Go Of Being Perfect

Coaching clients share how letting go of being perfect is one of their highest achievements. I know what they are saying! They move forward with a kick in their step because their fear of being perfect isn’t as big.

It takes practice to learn how to laugh at our mistakes.

Perfectionists If I can Learn to Let Go…So Can You

I posted a short article on Facebook and LinkedIn today. It was all about being a perfectionist. I just looked at the comments from my connections which were very interesting.
I noticed that I spelled the word Perfection wrong. I didn’t type in Perfectionist. I typed in Perfection.

I would have been embarrassed in the past. I use Spell Check and Grammarly all the time. I goofed.
The new Joyce laughed it off and wrote a humorous comment about it.

This may seem like a little issue for some of you. This is a sign of growth as a recovering perfectionist.

Look out for a future post about the importance of humility. This is key in showing up without having all the answers.

Now It’s Your Turn to Comment About Being or Not Being a Perfectionist

  • Please share how you recovered from being a perfectionist
  •  How have you changed from being perfect and becoming real?
  • What do you still need to do to stop beating yourself up when you make a mistake?

Has Procrastination Kept YOU Stuck? 2 Tips to Get You Unstuck

Procrastination is a career buster!

This article contains two tips to get you unstuck.

Procrastination can keep us from advancing in our careers.

We all know this, but we sometimes think and plan too much. And the opportunity disappears.

Joyce’s Story How She Got Unstuck

See if this sounds familiar to you – “Should I or shouldn’t I? If I do this, that might happen, but if I do that, this could happen.”
Those words kept me up for several nights until I figured it out.

I wanted to take my show Kick Conflict to the Curb and make it a LIVE Broadcast. Instead, I thought about things that could go wrong.  I kept procrastinating and only recorded interviews with thought-leaders. The next step was placing these interviews on social media. I felt stuck and couldn’t make the first move to learn how to go LIVE.

I decided that it was time to take the plunge. The next interview was going live! But, of course, there were technical issues, and I still needed to record the video without going LIVE. The great news is that after making a few more mistakes going LIVE, this communication coach finally gets it! 🙂

These Two Tips Will Help You Get Unstuck.

Tip One: Look for Several Options to Get You Unstuck

Ask people you know who succeeded in a project you want to pursue. They have faced similar feelings of doubt. Listen to their stories. This may stop you from doubting yourself.  Permit yourself to move on.

A massive shout out to  Trish Jenkins, TV Host, Speaker, and Author, for helping me along the way! She told me that doing a LIVE Broadcast is a game changer. She is right! I love producing my new show, Kick Conflict to the Curb, where I interview brilliant leaders on how they reduced their conflict and stress.

Tip Two: Take One Small Step to Get You Unstuck

Have you reached out to former clients who enjoyed working with you? Do you feel stuck and wonder if this will be too pushy? Your one action might be to call one of your past clients. Schedule this phone call with the client through email or text. This phone call could be your first step to continue building a solid relationship with your past client. And, remind him or her about how much you enjoyed working together. Catch up for a few minutes, and then ask if there is interest in you sharing your new services (in a non-selling way!) 🙂

I’m doing this and need to say one thing: A phone call with a former client is a great way to close a sale! It works. Plus, it’s so much fun catching up with each other.

  • Decide on a small action step to move forward.
  • Where are you procrastinating?
  • Are you still thinking about what you most want in your life?
  • What do you need to begin today versus procrastinating with NO action?
