Collaboration Solutions for Strong Leaders

Collaboration solutions in the workplace are necessary more than ever before because it saves time and effort for the entire team.  Strong leaders need to know if their communication is causing barriers for the team.  They will be respected as a leader who is able to give and most importantly receive constructive feedback.

Collaboration Solutions #1:  Take the time to ask yourself:

  1. Am I the catalyst for more open and effective communication?
  2. Do my expressions convey respect in every way?
  3. Do I genuinely help others without getting in their way?
  4. Am I a role model to motivate the team during good times and challenging moments?

These questions will help you when and if your team is not open with you.  I’d strongly suggest that you conduct a 360 with your team and direct reports.  Give them a survey to fill out anonymously with the above questions.  You will be able to uncover blind spots if they exist.  When you do this exercise you can always email me with questions about the results at Joyce@JoyceWeiss.com

Collaboration Solutions#2:  Explore your team’s openness with you

  1. Do they feel comfortable to give you constructive feedback?
  2.  Is the environment open where people feel comfortable having tough conversations?
  3. Do they ask you for support when they are overwhelmed?

The answers will be telling if you are open to their comments.  If no one gives you constructive feedback it may be time to have a meeting on the importance of having a 2-way conversation to improve processes and communications. If your environment is tense and people are not collaborating with each other you need to find out why.  They need to find collaboration solutions if one department is stressed and another department is not as busy.  Create a meeting and set the tone that it is necessary for an open dialogue.  If no one talks that is an indication that trust is an issue and you need to speak to individuals to ask the tough questions.  This isn’t easy to do and it’s important to let your team know that you need their support to move forward.  Remember that some of your team may have had negative experiences with prior leaders.  You need to express your expectations about having an open culture.

Latest Frustrations For Top Level Leaders

Do you feel that your team is disengaged and employees are pushing back?

This post is all about the stress and frustrations that my clients feel at work. I interview them before each program and specific trends are appearing.

What are the frustrations?

Top level leaders are exhausted because they are taking over the responsibility from their directors or managers who are not having tough conversations with their team.

Why does this happen?

As you know many managers/directors are not trained sufficiently on how to deal with tough conversations. They have their job responsibilities and share their frustrations with their boss and the boss takes over!

What can top leaders do to change this?

Top level leaders must have that tough conversation even if their senior staff pushes back and says, “I am too  too busy to have productive conversations with employees.” Everyone is busy. It is up to upper management to empower the entire team to feel safe and deal with bullies, narcissists, or low productive employees.

Specifically What Can I DO?

Stop rescuing your team by taking over their job responsibilities especially if your communication skills are excellent. This is your time to train managers and directors to do this on their own. You may think that I’m sounding like MRS. Tough Gal. I’m not. I hear complaints daily about employee morale and some leaders are in a rut and continue this same pattern.

Whose Responsibility is it anyway?

Everyone’s! Not just top leaders…the entire team. It will take you longer to resolve this conflict in the workplace especially if there is no trust or lack of training programs. But it is solvable. Recognize that there is a conflict with communication in your organization and do something immediately.

Can We Really Have Tough Conversations With Our BOSS?

cartoon criticize you in publicGlad that you decided to find out the answer which is…It Depends!  Some bosses are open and welcome constructive feedback while others are so full of ego and don’t encourage an open dialogue.  I just returned from presenting several workshops at the US Chamber Institute in Madison WI.  It was a real privilege speaking with men and women who work in chambers or associations throughout the USA.  

One of the sessions I conducted was “Managing Upward.”  I posed the following question to them…”What are some or your challenges with your boss or upper management?” 

Here are some of their responses:

  • The boss not being available
  • There is no follow up on issues that require swift action
  • Not dealing with conflict and letting things slide
  • Meetings which waste our time
  • No accountability with the team
  • Not setting expectations and no one knows what they need to be doing
  • Not having trust with my boss

Ouch!  Is that enough?  The list was a lot longer and you will find more scenarios in future posts.

What would you do if your boss gave you negative feedback in front of your team?

Would you…

  • Stay silent?
  • Say something that you wished you didn’t say?
  • Get the respect that you deserved by being direct with respect?

This is always a tough situation because it depends on so many variables when communicating to upward management.  Here is one option that we practiced in the session.

I don’t want to be disrespectful.
I do want to clear the air.
“I was caught off guard yesterday when I received negative comments in front of my colleagues because I would have appreciated the important feedback in a one to one meeting.”

Let’s dissect this formula.  I don’t want…I do want will make most communication safe.  The group came up with some realistic answers for their own situations using this one strategy. 
I am…when…because is the power talk formula that I have mentioned MANY times in my posts.  This works like a charm.  I was caught off guard is a statement that has NO judgment.  It is how you feel.  Try using this and let me know what results you receive.

This 1 Idea Will Reduce Negative Behavior

conflict sign be nice or leaveI recently watched a hearing between the Secret Service Director and Congress. It was extremely heated and I knew that I was going to write about this interaction in a future article. Let me refresh your memory. A few agents drank alcohol at a retirement party. After leaving the party, they crashed their car into the white house. It was on international news for several days.

Congress asked important and tough questions to the Secret Service Director and he repeatedly skirted all issues. Congressmen and women actually said, “What are you going to do about it?” The Director said, “I first need to get all of the facts.” Several members of Congress said the same thing, “Why not fire the agents on the spot? You need to make the hard decisions.” The Director was very nervous and it almost sounded like he was covering up the “real story.”

The bottom line is that there was a huge communication breakdown in the Department. Supposedly the Director did not hear about this incident for a few days. I ask the question, why didn’t he hear about this sooner?

Reasons why there are communication breakdowns:

  • Fear of retribution
  • Covering-up for each other
  • Dysfunctional cultural barriers
  • The wrong fit for roles and job responsibilities
  • Not knowing who to go to for answers
  • Unclear expectations
  • Too much red tape
