More Coaching Strategies to Improve Your Communication – Part 2

Are you ready to hear about more coaching strategies?
Do you wonder if your communication patterns get in the way of creating trust with others?
Would you like to see if you are a rescuer who could hinder progress in others?

Ouch! Hopefully, the questions above piqued your interest. 🙂 If so, you are in the right place. 🙂

Last week you read about the work of Michael Bungay Stanier on the TELL IT Communicators. I described the TELL IT Communicator from Michael’s class during the World of Executive and Business Coaching Summit.

Here’s a link to Part 1: Coaching Strategies to Improve Your communication – Big Time!
Michael Bungay Stanier shared that there are 3 types of communicators: Tell IT, Save IT, and Control IT

This article is about the SAVE IT Communicators.

https://www.joyceweiss.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Take-a-Chance-or-lose-risk.mp4

Coaching Strategies #1: SAVE IT Communication Challenges

  • Save IT Communicators are rescuers
  • They keep others from making mistakes
  • Listeners resent SAVE IT Communicators because they become codependent and don’t know how to stop the SAVE IT Communicator
  • They have all the answers

Coaching Strategies #2: SAVE IT Communication Benefits

  • They are heroes because their purpose is to save everyone from imperfections
  • SAVE IT Communicators think they are helping others from making mistakes

Coaching Strategies #3: SAVE IT Communication Solutions

  • Stay curious and do your best to stop rescuing everyone from making mistakes
  • Realize that success consists of falling down and taking risks
  • Think before you open your mouth
  • Ask yourself if your words help or hinder the success of others
  • See how your new behavior encourages self-growth and autonomy

Joyce, What Do You Think About SAVE IT Communicators?

Full disclosure.  Drum rolls, please.  I am a SAVE IT Communicator. I discussed this awareness with a couple of coaching colleagues.  We discovered that all 3 of us are Save It Communicators. We also realized that it’s time for a change. I am NOT any of these communicators when I coach with clients or in my virtual courses.

My personal life is another story. I decided to make a change and took this awareness as a gift to myself. The last couple of weeks have been more relaxing for me and my family.  I have stopped saying, ” It’s going to be cold, so you better take your jacket.” No More Mrs. Nice Gal!” Let’s face it, it’s up to us to take care of ourselves. Our family consists of all adults. No more babies or teens to rescue for this MASTER Coach! My family has started taking their own jackets. They appreciate the fact that I’m changing – of course, I told them about this and we discussed their patterns also. Hey, it’s only fair, if I change they need to work on their growth also.

Self-awareness is a great first step towards progress.  The good news is once we discover our communication style, we can then make important changes.  Some of them are easy while others are not. I promise, there will be more information on these important coaching strategies to add to your toolbox.

Let’s Hear From You

Let’s hear how you feel about these coaching strategies. Do you see SAVE IT Communicators in your workplace or home? If so, please share your awareness and how this communication style stifles creativity, trust, and growth.

I suggest that you talk about the 3 communication styles after I describe the last one next week.  This can be a great exercise for your department or family. When you have open-minded people, this will work really well. If you have one negative person, wait until that person is not present, or else he or she can ruin the results with their sarcasm and negativity.

The comment section is working! Let’s hear from you.

You can always send me a private email with questions or concerns about the communication conflicts that you are experiencing.

Let’s Stay Connected

Do you want to go deeper and grow professionally to your next level? If so, I have several coaching packages and memberships to fit anyone’s schedule and budget.  I’d love to work with you.
Give me a call to see how coaching can help you or your direct reports to improve relationships, careers, and personal peace!

Video 9: You May be Surprised Why I Became a Communication Strategist

Clients ask me how I became a communication strategist.  The answer may surprise you.

I was a late talker.  My relatives lived on the same block in Detroit MI.  They were very supportive and did what they could to understand my gibberish for years.  My father understood me when I said, “The goo took moo.”  In my language, it meant, “The girl took my mirror.”  Finally, I grew out of that stage and started talking a bit later than other kids in my family.  I was ready and look at me now.

We sure didn’t know that I was going to end up speaking for a living.  I started out as a keynote speaker and now I specialize in coaching emerging leaders, individuals, and small groups to kick conflict to the curb to get the respect they deserve.

People smile or laugh when I tell them that I was a late talker.  It has been an interesting ride for me.  I find it fascinating to research the latest information about communication challenges.  Clients appreciate that I share my stories with them about my own journey because it makes me approachable and real.  I think that these two qualities are not bad for a coach.  🙂

Here’s the lesson for today’s message

Try to figure out your own path on why you do what you do today. Did you dream as a child that you would be in your present career?  What did you want to do when you grew up?  We all have stories to share during our speeches or in any communication.

Please add a comment to my blog on the stories you share about yourself on why you do what you do today.  You can always send me an email HERE with questions on how you can find your own story.  You will receive a response from me because I enjoy connecting with my readers! 🙂

My last 6 clients have asked me to help them feel more comfortable with their public speaking skills.  It only takes a few sessions to make this happen.  Hey, what can I say?  I’m quick and clients use their new public speaking skills immediately.  A win/win for all.  🙂

Communication Strategies from the Wizard of Oz

courage | motivational quote | Joyce Weiss

The quote from Wizard of Oz is perfect if you are not comfortable giving presentations to your board of directors, boss, team or even a room full of prospects.  This post is the first of a series on Secrets from a Communication Strategist to Create and Deliver Outstanding Presentations.  Let me know how you enjoy this series.

Do you get nervous when you have to give a talk to your company?
Would you like to know how to calm the butterflies in your stomach?
Are you using specific communication strategies when you give presentations?

There are times in my career when I’m lucky enough to coach clients on how to communicate their thoughts successfully during presentations.  Most of us are not professional speakers. There are communication strategies that we can all use to successfully speak to groups.  The ideas in this post came from 3 recent coaching sessions.  Let me know which one “speaks” to you.

Communication Strategy #1:  Be Prepared

This sounds so basic, doesn’t it?  We have to return to the basics when it comes to public speaking.  Know your stuff.  Look at your speech daily and read it out loud.  Feeling comfortable with your speech is very important.  Organizing your thoughts on paper takes time.  Start with an introduction, create the body of the speech and end up with a powerful ending.

Communication Strategy #2:  Memorize your Opening and Ending

communication strategist | Joyce Weiss

Once clients feel comfortable with their speech, it’s time to create a powerful opening and closing.  The opening can be a quote from a famous person, a provocative question or even a story of yours that will engage your group.  The ending can consist of the same quote that you used in the introduction, a call to action, or to ask the audience to stay in touch.  I strongly suggest that clients watch TED talks or successful speakers at their workplace to see how experienced communicators create outstanding speeches.

Communication Strategy #3:  Be Authentic

My secret sauce is to take serious topics such as firing employees, dealing with mediocre team members or bullies and make them fun.  At the beginning of my career, I hired a drama coach to help me understand where to stand on the stage, use my hands, and create powerful stories.  I concentrated so much on these new strategies that I lost my personality.  I wanted to be perfect in front of the audience.  Once I realized that my authenticity disappeared, I had to decide which strategies to keep and which ones to eliminate.

Making people smile is something that I do quite naturally.  I use my sarcasm, humor, and optimism to give them hope.  This is something I coach clients to do also.  I encourage them to find their secret sauce and use it!  Sue started to quote from her book.  She didn’t even think about this until our session.  Brad started using his photography in his talks.  His audience keeps on giving him positive feedback and he decided to create posters to sell at the presentations of his photos.

Stay Connected with Me

Please let us know how you faced fear and were able to move forward.  I will tell you about my fear of deep water and the motivation why I conquered the fear in a future post.  Add a comment to my blog on how you overcame fear and talked to your bully or boss or gave a speech even though your hands were visibly shaking from nerves.

You will receive a response from me because I enjoy connecting with my readers! 🙂  You are always welcome to send me a private email with concerns about a future talk that you need to create. After only a few coaching sessions you will use powerful communication strategies that I learned over 30 years ago from attending conferences at the National Speaker’s Association.

A Proven Tip- Improve Your Communication Skills Now

Being honest might not get you a lot of friends, but it will always get you the right ones.  – John Lennon

John’s quote fits perfectly with today’s theme.  The toughest communication is one that you may have with yourself!

Most of us think that we are great listeners and communicators. If we are as good as we “think” – why are there so many communication breakdowns at work or home?

The answer is…

Us! That’s right, you read this correctly. I am guilty of thinking the very same thing. I know this is true when giving directions for a group activity and the group looks at me like deer staring at headlights. It’s NOT them. It’s the way I gave the directions.  Believe me, I am continuously learning how to improve and I’m a Communication Strategist!

So, Joyce How Can I Start Becoming a Better Communicator?

Look at the list below and see what areas you need to develop in order to communicate better.

  • Be brief and concise-get to the point
  • Be forceful and definite rather than hesitant and apologetic
  • Talk in specifics-give examples and details
  • Talk in generalizations and explanations
  • Let others know when I disagree with them
  • Let others know when I am getting irritated
  • Listen more than I speak with others
  • Talk in group discussions

Now What, Joyce?

Select one or two areas and make a conscious effort to work on these skills immediately. If you need to talk in group discussions, start giving your opinions or even ask a question. Some of these areas could be holding you back from growing as a leader.

How Can I Get More Ideas Like This?
