How to Deal with Mediocrity at Work

Mediocrity at work is a topic that many of my clients want me to cover during their training sessions.  Are you a President or Leader of your company who wants to eradicate mediocrity at work?  Great!  This article and video will provide a simple exercise that you can share with your team.

A new work reality is that companies reward employees for their value and not just for the amount of time that they are at the company.  This was normal years ago.  Your organization may still reward mediocre employees.

The video below may help you discover how to eradicate this kind of behavior so that you can reward the stars and high productive employees.

The best and brightest places to work know that adding value is more important then just putting in the time.  I get into heated discussions about this topic from those who don’t agree with this New Work Reality.

An exercise for Leaders to Use to deal with mediocrity at work

I use this activity during my Shift Happens:  Thriving in Change Programs.  I ask the audience to select a partner and share why the company should keep them.  Both partners respond by answering the question.

What happens after this exercise?

The answers always amaze me because there are still people who think that they deserve a raise just because they have been a loyal employee.  Adding value to the company counts…not longevity!  This exercise gives leaders an opportunity to address mediocrity at work.

What Leaders can do to reduce mediocrity at work

 • Be very clear about expectations concerning productivity.
 • When employees slack off, let them know the consequences.
 • Reward the high producing individuals to keep them motivated.
 • Use the above exercise to start this important dialog.

I want to hear from you!

New Ways to Cope with a Difficult Person

Are you a manager or director who wants to help your direct reports handle their own conflict in the workplace?

Do you work with a colleague who is selfish and doesn’t help your team?

If so, don’t go anywhere!  This post and video will help you understand how you or others react to these difficult people…especially the narcissist.

The video below is about New Ways to Cope with a Difficult Person.

Different Ways That We Cope With Difficult People

 • Fighting or countering the attack
 • Fleeing or avoiding the situation
 • Giving in or surrendering to the threat

Why is it so Hard to Deal with a Narcissist?

 • What’s with me?
 • Am I simply a masochist?
 • How can I allow myself to be so fooled?
 • Why can’t I speak up and tell him/her to…?

The Danger of the Narcissist’s Charm

 • Their wit can be hypnotizing
 • They’re very clever and encourage you to be forgiving when he or she is out of line

If a narcissist is in your personal life, you may be attracted because of this characteristic.

 Thoughts From Joyce

 • Remember that we need to protect ourselves from the narcissist’s charm in order to get out of their dangerous web.
 • Once we realize what is happening we can set boundaries and decide what we need to do.

Latest Frustrations For Top Level Leaders

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them – Ernest Hemingway

Do you feel that your team is disengaged and employees are pushing back?

This post is all about the stress and frustrations that my clients feel at work. I interview them before each program and specific trends are appearing.

What are the frustrations?

Top level leaders are exhausted because they are taking over the responsibility from their directors or managers who are not having tough conversations with their team.

Why does this happen?

As you know many managers/directors are not trained sufficiently on how to deal with tough conversations. They have their job responsibilities and share their frustrations with their boss and the boss takes over!

Click HERE to read my article on How Effective Are You at Setting Boundaries at Work?

What can top leaders do to change this?

Top level leaders must have that tough conversation even if their senior staff pushes back and says, “I am too  too busy to have productive conversations with employees.” Everyone is busy. It is up to upper management to empower the entire team to feel safe and deal with bullies, narcissists, or low productive employees.

Specifically What Can I DO?

Stop rescuing your team by taking over their job responsibilities especially if your communication skills are excellent. This is your time to train managers and directors to do this on their own. You may think that I’m sounding like MRS. Tough Gal. I’m not. I hear complaints daily about employee morale and some leaders are in a rut and continue this same pattern.

Whose Responsibility is it anyway?

Everyone’s! Not just top leaders…the entire team. It will take you longer to resolve this conflict in the workplace especially if there is no trust or lack of training programs. But it is solvable. Recognize that there is a conflict with communication in your organization and do something immediately.

This is How I Turned Around Stress at Work

conflict black board conflict solutionsHave you agreed to do something that was not in your comfort zone and the project just didn’t turn out as well as you hoped?  This post is about a workshop that I was asked to do for one of my loyal clients.  The meeting planner, Julie, was in a bind because a trainer who she used for a “Hiring and Firing” class was not available.  She asked me if I was willing to do research and teach the class for a couple of her conferences.  I told her that I was NOT a lawyer or human resource specialist.  She realized this yet knew that my expertise was in conflict and conflict.  I agreed to do this because of the confidence from my client.

I interviewed several lawyers and human resource specialists and created a 20 page booklet.  I was very interested in the topic and was impressed with how corporate America deals with this important yet difficult subject.  I was ready to teach the course.  The first conference went better than I thought.  Yet the feedback was 75% positive and 25% negative.  Participants wished Julie brought in a lawyer or human resource director.  They were right.  I did not like the fact that I could not answer all the questions during the class.

What to do? What Changes did I Make?

Conference #2 was coming up.  After a LONG self evaluation, I discovered how I could turn around this stressful situation and hopefully make this training better.  I immediately introduced myself as a facilitator.  I told them that I would help facilitate their tough conversations when we discussed the legal ramifications of terminating employees.  I also stated that there were several people in the training who already hired and fired employees and I asked them to be the real experts at times.  They agreed to do this.  I also empowered the participants who never hired or fired others to ask questions.  This was also a new topic for many of their colleagues.  I created many participatory exercises.  Small groups wrote job descriptions or decided which interview questions were their favorite ones.  We read some of the handouts verbatim on firing and discrimination because of the seriousness of the topic.

Was the second training better?

Yes it was!  Participants appreciated my transparency when I concentrated on what I could do and my own skill set.  The difference was that in the first conference I kept on telling them that I was NOT a lawyer or human resource specialist.  Plus in the second conference I used the expertise of the people in the group which they all appreciated.

Joyce, what did your learn?

First of all I learned to trust myself when others see a positive quality that I may not see about myself.  I actually told Julie that I would like to be considered in the future to present “Hiring and Firing” to her members.  I was able to turn this stressful situation around by making minor changes.  Trust me when I say I will remember this story in the future.

So what about you?

Have you ever created a project that did not turn out as well as you wanted?  If so, how did you turn things around to make the project a success?

I want to hear from you!

Are You The Family’s Truth Teller?

cartoon women boxing in long dressesClients and friends ask me how I can be as bold as I am with some of the examples that I share with them.  I realized years ago that most people don’t know how to resolve conflict in the workplace or home.  I see people letting things fester because they don’t have the skills or fear what will happen if they open up their mouth!  It has taken me YEARS of practice, making mistakes, making more mistakes, taking classes, reading, and gaining the respect by others and mainly for myself.

At times my family asks me why I need to be the family’s truth teller.  I tell them what Forrest Gump said when someone asked him what he was going to be, “Aren’t I going to be me?”  Believe me when I tell you that I’m not ALWAYS the bold one.  There are times when I actually hold back because the timing is not the best, or I may be tired and not full of my creative juices for that moment.  BUT, when I see things that need to be said, in a positive way, you better believe that I point these things out to clients, friends and family.  It is not always easy but I get a great night’s sleep because I don’t constantly think about unresolved issues.

This post contains quotes from people who you will recognize about this very topic.  I do hope that they will give your the courage to either speak up or hold back if you are one of the aggressive communicators. 🙂 … [Continue reading]
