Break Your Silence: Tell Your Story

Introduction:

Do you tell your story and showcase your leadership skills? Or do you think it’s bragging during interviews or aiming for a promotion?

This blog issue covers how to tell your story confidently, and rebound when things don’t go your way.

Tell Your Story (Without Bragging)

Many professionals struggle to “sell themselves” without coming across as arrogant. The secret is to anchor your answers with concrete results and stories that showcase your skills in action.

In interviews, expect the question: “Tell me about a time when…” Here’s where preparation pays off. Have a handful of succinct, impactful stories ready.  It isn’t bragging if you’ve already done something. It’s about being fact-based and framing your experience as directly relevant to the organization’s growth.

Avoid Rambling While You Tell Your Story

A critical mistake to avoid: rambling. Successful people know their point, say it clearly, and stop talking—allowing for a two-way conversation that demonstrates both confidence and strong listening skills.

Recall the weak leaders in your life—the ones who talked at you, never asking for your input. You probably stayed silent, knowing they neither cared nor had the skills to listen.

Most people don’t know how to listen with intent!  Whether it’s interviews or daily work life, dominating the conversation or failing to seek others’ input are major errors. Not only does active listening prevent miscommunication, but it also marks you as someone ready for greater responsibility.

Advocating for Promotions: Facts Over Feelings

When it’s time to ask for a promotion or a pay bump, confidence alone isn’t enough. Consistently walk, talk, and act like a leader—even before you’re officially given the title. Document measurable impacts: improved team accountability, increased productivity, cost savings, or anything else that translates into organizational value.

Remember, it’s not about how long you’ve been there—it’s about the value you deliver and will continue to deliver.

Bouncing Back from Rejection

Everyone faces rejection at some point—a lost job opportunity or a denied promotion. Resilience and self-reflection are keys. Analyze what happened, ask for candid feedback (“What can I do to improve for next time?”), and decide whether to stay or seek new opportunities. Remember, even rejected professionals are still in control of their career path.

A major speaking rejection early in my career taught me humility and helped me grow—a reminder that setbacks can be gifts if you face them and adapt.

Conclusion: Tell Your Story, Lead Your Future

In the end, selling your leadership skills authentically is about storytelling, self-awareness, and forward motion. Assess yourself, prepare your stories, listen actively, and never stop learning from both wins and setbacks. It’s not about waiting patiently for recognition—it’s about confidently showcasing what you bring to the table, every single day.

Can You Relate to This? It’s All About Self-Care

Happy 2023! I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to touch base about the importance of self-care in the workplace. We know that employees who are well-rested, healthy, and happy are more productive and engaged in their work. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize self-care in the workplace.

My question for you this week is – What about you? Are you making sure that you are balancing work and home? Or is balancing life and work out of whack for you?

Joyce Had a Breakthrough in her Career and Self-Care This Week

We had a flood in our home and had to repaint and recarpet the entire condo. My aha moment came when I looked at the empty walls. I started to breathe with a sigh of relief.

What in the world was going on? It finally dawned on me that the uncluttered walls symbolized my life. I was doing more work and enjoying it less. It was time to gain control again.

I asked myself three questions (the same conversations that I have with my clients) such as:
1. How can I unclutter my day?
2. What changes do I want to make to enjoy my life more?
3. Which tasks get in the way when balancing my ambition with my inner peace?

Next week I’ll share what I decided to change. This is a breakthrough that is changing my life.

Has Procrastination Kept YOU Stuck? 2 Tips to Get You Unstuck

Procrastination is a career buster!

This article contains two tips to get you unstuck.

Procrastination can keep us from advancing in our careers.

We all know this, but we sometimes think and plan too much. And the opportunity disappears.

Joyce’s Story How She Got Unstuck

See if this sounds familiar to you – “Should I or shouldn’t I? If I do this, that might happen, but if I do that, this could happen.”
Those words kept me up for several nights until I figured it out.

I wanted to take my show Kick Conflict to the Curb and make it a LIVE Broadcast. Instead, I thought about things that could go wrong.  I kept procrastinating and only recorded interviews with thought-leaders. The next step was placing these interviews on social media. I felt stuck and couldn’t make the first move to learn how to go LIVE.

I decided that it was time to take the plunge. The next interview was going live! But, of course, there were technical issues, and I still needed to record the video without going LIVE. The great news is that after making a few more mistakes going LIVE, this communication coach finally gets it! 🙂

These Two Tips Will Help You Get Unstuck.

Tip One: Look for Several Options to Get You Unstuck

Ask people you know who succeeded in a project you want to pursue. They have faced similar feelings of doubt. Listen to their stories. This may stop you from doubting yourself.  Permit yourself to move on.

A massive shout out to  Trish Jenkins, TV Host, Speaker, and Author, for helping me along the way! She told me that doing a LIVE Broadcast is a game changer. She is right! I love producing my new show, Kick Conflict to the Curb, where I interview brilliant leaders on how they reduced their conflict and stress.

Tip Two: Take One Small Step to Get You Unstuck

Have you reached out to former clients who enjoyed working with you? Do you feel stuck and wonder if this will be too pushy? Your one action might be to call one of your past clients. Schedule this phone call with the client through email or text. This phone call could be your first step to continue building a solid relationship with your past client. And, remind him or her about how much you enjoyed working together. Catch up for a few minutes, and then ask if there is interest in you sharing your new services (in a non-selling way!) 🙂

I’m doing this and need to say one thing: A phone call with a former client is a great way to close a sale! It works. Plus, it’s so much fun catching up with each other.

Career Development Tips: Be Your Own Best Advocate |Video

Are you ready to discover career development tips to use for yourself or your direct reports?

Certified Professional Coach, Lori Shook presented the ideas I’m sharing in this video to the World of Business and Executive Coaching Summit.

So how can you help yourself or your direct reports discover how to be their own best advocate?
Here’s a possible strategy:  Discover their internal inner board of directors.

I have used the exercise with coaching clients and the results are stellar.

Human Resource clients consider me their partner: especially when they have no time to coach:

  • Emerging leaders to grow
  • Employees who need to use their voice without losing their cool
  • Managers who need to control difficult team members

The video below gives you ideas to get you started with this unique exercise.

Here are EASY career development tips to help you identify your internal board of directors

I call this our internal wisdom.

We all have internal voices or characters that influence our behaviors. When we name them, we will be able to use them as resources.

There are NO good or bad board members. Some will be more useful than others at different times.

Here are several of the inner boards that my clients discovered:

  • The energizer
  • Frankenstein
  • Am I good enough?
  • Risk-averse
  • Cheerleader
  • Enjoy the journey
  • Leader
  • Controller

Start by asking these questions to add to your career development tips toolbox:

  • What is an inner voice that you really trust?
  • Which inner characters help you succeed?
  • What are the inner impulses that get in your way in important situations?

Define your board of directors and give them a name

  • Which of your inner board will help you/hurt you/stop you?
  • Invite the board members you want to use more often
  • Find ways to manage the uninvited ones
  • Take ownership of your behaviors

Look for my video next week which will cover more ideas on your Inner Board.

An Inspirational Quote to Start the New Year

An Inspirational Quote to Start the New Year

I saved this quote for the beginning of the year because it’s reflection time. inspirational quote | live the life you deserve

As a result of writing this post, I thought about my own answers to the questions that I ask you at the bottom of the page.

  • 2021 was the year of learning many video strategies to make them better for social media. Editing on Camtasia is now easy {it’s a learning process :)}.
  • Online classes were abundant in my life to create new ideas and challenge my brain.  There were so many options to select from and I’m prioritizing which ones will be the best projects to implement.
  • 2022 is the year to start numerous projects.
  • You will see the relaunch of my live online 6-weeks course: Kick Conflict to the Curb.
  • There will be Executive Round Tables to brainstorm conflicts shared by like-minded leaders.
  • The 3rd program is a 3-month group coaching and mastermind program.

It took me 2 years to plan all of these projects. No more spending money on learning for now. It’s action time.

How Does the Inspirational Quote Impact YOU?

  • What did you learn from 2021?
  • How will you change as a result of what you learned and reflected?
  • What do you hope will happen in 2022 with these new opportunities?

Happy New Year to you and your family. There’s a lot of hope for 2022. I vote to concentrate on the possibilities while staying safe.
