There is No I in Co-Worker but There is a WE

cartoon booste office moraleDo you include everyone in team meetings… even those who work on their own?
Do you want to reduce conflict in the workplace and improve communication?

What can you say and do to help others feel included? Team members who feel isolated are not going to be productive, especially when they want to be part of the team.  Of course some colleagues want to work on their own and don’t want to be part of team meetings.  We all have different behavioral and work styles.  Different equals different.  Different does NOT equal wrong!

Here are ideas to help others feel like they are an important part of the team:

1. What solutions do you have to help solve this problem?

2. I consider you to be a key team player and need your advice.

3. How do you think we can improve our staff meetings?

4. Go out to lunch with your team members.

Some of your  team members may feel left out and they don’t know how to express this feeling of isolation.  I suggest that everyone on your team do his or her best to be as inclusive as possible.  This may sound like something that you heard in high school yet I hear numerous clients tell me how they did not feel like part of the team when they did not share office space with colleagues or were in another building.  This one idea will improve morale immediately.

Great Leaders Ask The Right Questions

cartoon oops fb out of timeLeaders who really understand the importance of employee involvement ask their team for input.  This is nothing new!  This is something that many leaders don’t do.  You may ask…”Joyce, how can you say such a bold statement?”  I’m glad that you asked.  I have had the privilege of working with some of the greatest leaders in Corporate America.  The questions in this article come from my clients who learned how to grow from being a good leader to becoming great in his or her field.

Voltaire suggested that we “Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.”

Here are some thought-provoking questions you might pose. They will elicit ideas for doing things better:

 1. What would you do first if somehow you became the owner of this business tomorrow morning?

 2. What is the best use of your time? Your knowledge and abilities? How are they being wasted, if they are? What could you be doing that you are not doing?

3. What should I know about your work that I don’t know? What do you need to know about the business that you don’t know?

 4. What seems to you to work well here? Why? What doesn’t work so well? Why do you suppose it doesn’t?

 5. What opportunities do you see that we’re really not exploiting? What problems do you see ahead that we’re not aware of? What would you do about them?

6. What do customers say to you or reveal to you about our product(s) or service(s) – about price, quality, the competition? What three comments do you hear most frequently?

Send me your GREAT Questions that you ask your team to engage them to be their very best.  I will send a hard copy of my booklet, “19 Surefire Ways to Bring More Joy and Harmony into Your Life” to those of you who send me quotes that I use in future articles.

Hear Others Out & Bring Good Ideas In

cartoon boring meeting and snoringMake Active Listening Part of Your Team Communication to Reduce Conflict in the Workplace

  • Is there more texting than listening in your workplace?
  • Are your colleagues making or answering calls during important face to face meetings?
  • The important question is…Are you listening at work?

If you answered “yes” to any of these 3 questions, please don’t despair…We are ALL guilty of not listening or focusing on others at times.  Listening – really listening – is a skill that needs to be learned and honed.

Start paying attention at your own workplace and see how you and others can improve in these areas.  Bring up this topic at your next meeting.  I encourage my clients to discuss the tips below and many times they start to groan (groaning is a good sign!) when I ask them to pay attention to these tips.  I realize that they are obvious.  I also know that mistakes happen as a result of NOT following these 5 ideas.  If everyone is using them…then why is communication such an issue for most workplaces?  I always ask clients what is it costing you NOT to fix communication.  They answer this question with a sigh and a dollar amount on lost productivity…it really is mind boggling.  So, please pay attention to the obvious and watch your bottom line improve!

Click here to read more information on “How to Fix Team Communication:  Team Members GOT No Respect?”

Follow these tips:

1. Don’t interrupt

2. Don’t judge

3. Understand contributions from the speaker’s point of view

4. Summarize

5. Reflect back the ideas and feelings from others

By turning off your internal self talk (“I can’t believe she is saying this.” or “ I wish he would stop telling his long winded story.”) you will become a master communicator.
