Stop Your Inner Stress with a Rude Jerk: Part 4

This series: Working with a Rude Jerk is getting some attention!

I’m receiving emails with questions on how to handle these rude people. This article describes another true story from one of my clients.

The next article contains specific strategies on what you can do. Especially, when the rude jerk tries to pull you down. And your inner stress is affected.

You’ll find the links below if you missed the first 3 articles in the series:

Working with a Jerk

True Story # 4 on Working with a Rude Jerk

Todd is a sales rep for a mid-sized firm. He received a promotion for selling the most products in the company for the first quarter. The leaders wrote Todd’s name on a huge recognition board in the lunchroom.

Can you guess what happened next? You are correct if you guessed that someone erased Todd’s name from the board.

The horrific part is that no one at Todd’s firm addressed this mean-spirited act.

What Would You Do if You Were Todd’s Boss?

Here are several ideas shared by clients:

The leaders need to call an all-employee meeting to address this rude act. The message:  supporting each other on the team. Be very specific on the consequences when the team tries to sabotage other’s success. Discuss how to improve morale and what the team needs.

Some leaders don’t have the communication skills on how to stop the negativity. And how to handle a rude jerk in their workplace. Morale spirals down when a negative culture is allowed. Many of you may have left a company when leaders allow this kind of behavior. It takes a toll on the team when a rude jerk is allowed to get away with sabotaging others. I hear stories like this way too often.

Joyce, What Can We Do Working With a Rude Jerk?

I will have an entire answer in next week’s blog.  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. Speak to HR about what suggestions they have for you.  Make sure that you bring enough data.  This is not a communication of whining and complaining. It needs to be specific details and think of possible suggestions before you take this issue to leadership.
  2. Talk to the Jerk on your own if you have a decent relationship with him or her. Ask questions to help you understand why he or she was rude.

The great news is that my new and updated website and youtube channel will be ready soon. There will be articles and videos addressing these issues. And, you will find out how easy it is to work with me as your personal conflict resolution and communication coach.

5 Easy Secrets to Coach Your Team: Part 1

Do you want to learn a powerful secret from my team coaching toolbox?  If so, you are in the right place:  Create Your Team’s Code of Conduct.

This is part 1 of a 5-part series on creating your code of conduct.
Make sure and look for parts 2-5 in the next few blog posts.

This article contains an exciting exercise that I use in my training sessions on Resolving Conflict and Employee Engagement.  Clients enjoy using this strategy.  They implement the ideas during and after the session.  I hope that you see the value of using this powerful training secret.  It can help you reduce conflict in the workplace and improve your working condition.

You may be asking yourself, “What is a code of conduct?”  A code of conduct is a powerful set of rules that govern the internal behavior of any team.

Team Coaching Secret #1:  Strategies to use a Code of Conduct

  • The rules are made by the team.code of conduct |team coaching
  • Team members are willing to stand and defend the code.
  • Each team member is personally responsible and accountable for his or her behavior.
  • It allows everyone to do their best work.
  • Everyone must play by the same rules.
  • The team agrees to put in the time and energy – not just show up for work.
  • Everyone helps finds the unique talents of team members.

Thoughts from Joyce

Here are examples of my client’s code of conduct that we created together:

  • Everyone needs to come to the meeting on time.
  • No side conversations during the meeting.
  • Cell phones are turned off.
  • Everyone needs to participate.
  • The team supports members when harassment occurs and confronts bullies and other difficult people.

The idea is for the entire team to come up with its own code.  Leaders can’t persuade others what direction to take.  I’ve seen miracles happen when this exercise is done right.  The team can change the code to fine-tune their goals.

I find that clients get better results when they have a coach help them create the code of conduct so leaders and team members are equal during this strategy session. It doesn’t take long to do this because I’ve got my secret sauce when it comes to team coaching. Just saying! 😉

What a Treat Interviewing Diane Bogino on Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

Hello Dear Readers!

I enjoy inviting guests to share their wisdom and experience with you. This week we are in for a real treat! The video describes how Diane Bogino helps organizations grow a healthy culture.
Her motto is, “Instead of TAKING the time to whine, MAKE the time to TAKE ACTION.”

Diane Bogino is an Industrial-Organizational Psychologist who has assisted organizations, executives, and individuals in getting out of their own way to achieve success by developing a better understanding of one another’s communication styles, behaviors, and effective business practices.

In a former life, Diane was an actress and model.  She appeared in a movie and in numerous commercials and did a national spot for Delta airlines. She also did voice-overs, print, and runway modeling. At one time she was “Daffey Diane,” (some say she still is!), a magic clown. She also performed magic as herself winning Magician of the Year for Greater Atlanta.

What prompted you to go into coaching and consulting

As a result of an abusive childhood, I thought I was too stupid to go to school. I went to college late in life and went into training and educating people to help them grow. This is really my passion. I have an M.A. in Industrial Psychology.  My main emphasis is the way people think and communicate – helping them work better as a team. The goal is to help people understand each other and create a better culture.

How did you change your mindset when you were a little girl coming from an abusive household?

When I was 30 I had an epiphany and said, “Life doesn’t have to be like this.” You shouldn’t think of yourself in such a negative way. I learned self-talk and now help people get out of their own way which leads them to success. I had to reverse the conversations in my own head because I thought so negatively. I would literally have to say, “STOP” out loud. It may take a while and is a good place to start.
I realized that I had so much to bring to the world

How are you able to change the company culture?

I like to start with the executive team. Assessments are a great way to start the process. I do an individual and team debrief. The team needs to understand each other. Once you have a conversation with someone else with who you have a conflict, then the healing process can begin, and you can start to communicate better with each other.

Watch Oceans 11 to Learn Team-Building Strategies

You will learn all about team-building strategies after watching the movie Oceans 11.  A good hacker, a loose cannon, a suave smooth-talker, a pickpocket, a killer martial arts…team building strategies
Ok so not every team is as exciting as a heist movie rat pack, but you can get pretty close with these ideas.

Have you ever wondered why certain teams succeed?
Changing your team’s status quo is a huge part of the equation.

If you don’t embrace new concepts, your team will become less effective at preventing serious problems, responding quickly to issues as they arise, and providing innovative strategies for increased productivity.

Team Building Strategy #1:  A good team consists of 6 aspects

1. Goal clarity

2. Strong relationships

3. Healthy conflict management

4. Clear role clarity and expectations

5. Procedures that encourage productivity

6. The energy that exists within the team

All 6 of these aspects need to be part of a successful team.

Team Building Strategy #2:  Ask your team for input

I suggest that you take an informal survey by asking your team which aspect is your team’s strength and which one is your team’s weakness.
Make a list of the 6 team-building strategies above and ask your team to rate each one on how they see your team. This simple survey is a great start for some interesting discussions on how to make your team even stronger.  It’s an asset for any leader to listen to the needs and opinions of the entire team.
