Tips on the Importance of Laughing even During Tough Times

Hello Dear Readers!

Do you know about the importance of laughing?
When’s the last time that you focused on something humorous?
Are you ready to smile – even just for a moment?

If so, please stay right where you are to take a quick moment to use your smile muscles.  I know you can do this! 🙂

Many of you know that most of my writings and coaching are about communicating through conflict. A hidden gem is that HUMOR has always been an important part of my life. I’m NOT a humorist! I am an individual who fights daily to find something positive even during low times in my life. I’m a realist and see that many people have forgotten to look at the good that is also happening right now even during the pandemic. A few of you asked me to write some upbeat articles for the next few articles. Your wish is my command.

The next few posts will be taken from a new site that we’re creating.  The site will give readers FREE quotes and Action Steps on communication, dealing with conflict, positive mindsets, motivation, etc.
The vision is that people who sign up will receive FREE tips and positive news delivered to their email once/week for one year.

You will find 2 of the tips below.  Please comment and answer the questions so we can start communicating with each other on these safe and fun ideas.
I’m all about reducing drama and finding more peace and respect in our life.  I’m not asking for much, right? 🙂

Tips To Be Happy #1 on The Importance of Laughing

tips to be happy |

Realize that humor is all around you. You simply need to give yourself permission to find it. Take a moment to think of something that made you smile or laugh recently.
Write down this memory on what made you smile or laugh.

“Humor is a skill. We need to train ourselves to look for and find it.”

The photo is of my grandson Dylan who is now 20 and an engineering student.  It was fun for me to include this crazy photo. I used to dress as a clown and do magic tricks at reading rallies in Detroit.  No, I will not share a photo of me in a clown suit! 🙂

tips to be happy Tips To Be Happy #2 on The Importance of Laughing

Keep a daily humor journal, with a cartoon or story that made you smile. This will help you start looking for cute or funny things that happen every day.
Cut out or download a cartoon or write a story that made you laugh this week.
Send me an email HERE with a cartoon or photo that made you smile and I will send you a surprise!  Can’t tell you what it will be, or it won’t be a surprise. 🙂

Video 9: You May be Surprised Why I Became a Communication Strategist

Clients ask me how I became a communication strategist.  The answer may surprise you.

I was a late talker.  My relatives lived on the same block in Detroit MI.  They were very supportive and did what they could to understand my gibberish for years.  My father understood me when I said, “The goo took moo.”  In my language, it meant, “The girl took my mirror.”  Finally, I grew out of that stage and started talking a bit later than other kids in my family.  I was ready and look at me now.

We sure didn’t know that I was going to end up speaking for a living.  I started out as a keynote speaker and now I specialize in coaching emerging leaders, individuals, and small groups to kick conflict to the curb to get the respect they deserve.

People smile or laugh when I tell them that I was a late talker.  It has been an interesting ride for me.  I find it fascinating to research the latest information about communication challenges.  Clients appreciate that I share my stories with them about my own journey because it makes me approachable and real.  I think that these two qualities are not bad for a coach.  🙂

Here’s the lesson for today’s message

Try to figure out your own path on why you do what you do today. Did you dream as a child that you would be in your present career?  What did you want to do when you grew up?  We all have stories to share during our speeches or in any communication.

Stay Connected with Me

Please add a comment to my blog on the stories you share about yourself on why you do what you do today.  You can always send me an email HERE with questions on how you can find your own story.  You will receive a response from me because I enjoy connecting with my readers! 🙂

Reach out on my cell 248.310.6998 or 800.713.1926 to explore how career coaching could be a great action step for your career development or others who could benefit from working with me as their personal communication coach. There are many options to fit your budget and time schedule!

My last 6 clients have asked me to help them feel more comfortable with their public speaking skills.  It only takes a few sessions to make this happen.  Hey, what can I say?  I’m quick and clients use their new public speaking skills immediately.  A win/win for all.  🙂

Joyce Weiss’s Favorite Quote on Professional Growth

favorite quote | joyce weiss | communication strategist | career coach

Sydney J. Harris’s quote speaks volumes about one of my favorite topics – professional and personal development.  There’s no secret that my passion for coaching is about as transparent as a person can be.  Years ago when I traveled with friends, they were reading romance novels and there I was on a beach delving into the newest self-help book.  Fast forward to today and you will find me on YouTube watching new techniques shared by numerous professional development gurus such as Tony Robbins.  I’m NOT judging anyone’s reading choices!  I’m giving you a glimpse into my interests.  🙂

Billions is an American television drama series starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis, that premiered on Showtime on January 17, 2016. The series is loosely based on the activities of the crusading federal prosecutor of financial crimes and his legal battles with hedge fund managers.  Wendy is the corporate spiritual advisor for the hedge fund company.  She uses effective coaching strategies that she learned from Tony Robbins on the team. I am mesmerized by her outcomes.  My coaching clients have been introduced to many of her technique and the results are impressive.

I feel that we are on a continuous journey to become the best who we can be and to change the world one person at a time.  I own this statement.  It’s so worthwhile to support others who believe in this philosophy.

Here’s my question for the week:

How do you get to know yourself?  Is it through reading, training, or coaching?
Please share your favorite personal or professional growth books.  I will compile your ideas in a future blog.

Please share if you like this quote.

Powerful Leadership Skills to Build Trust at Work

Effective CommunicationDo you want to improve your leadership skills and communication?

Is your team disengaged?

Do employees push back?

Are you rescuing employees instead of having them take care of their own conflict at work?

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them –
Ernest Hemingway

This article covers frustrations that my clients experience at work. I interview clients before each coaching program or workshop and specific patterns are apparent.

What are Some Leadership Frustrations?

Top level leaders are exhausted because they are taking over the responsibility from their directors or managers who are not having tough conversations with their team.

The same communication issues occur and nothing seems to get resolved.

Why Does This Happen?

As you know many managers/directors are not trained sufficiently on how to deal with tough conversations. The untrained managers know their job responsibilities. Employee push-back, gossip or any conflict are all issues that they want their boss to resolve.

How Can Top Managers Improve their Leadership Skills?

Top level leaders must have that tough conversation even if their senior staff pushes back and says, “I’m too busy to have productive conversations with employees.” Everyone is busy. It’s the responsibility of upper management to empower the entire team so they feel safe and to solve their own “drama” with bullies, narcissists, or low productive employees. At times leaders need to help managers or team members if a resolution is not found.

Specifically, What Can You DO to Change?

Stop rescuing your team by taking over their job responsibilities especially if your communication skills are excellent. This is your time to train managers and directors to do this on their own. You may think that I’m sounding like MRS. Tough Gal. I’m not. I hear complaints daily about employee morale and some leaders are in a rut and continue this same pattern.

Whose Responsibility is it Anyway?

Everyone’s – not just top leaders, the entire team. It will take you longer to resolve this conflict in the workplace if there’s no trust or lack of training programs. But it’s solvable. Recognize that there is a conflict with communication in your organization and do something immediately.

Strategic Communication Strategies to Insure That Employees Grow

Do you want Strategic Communication Strategies to ensure that individuals grow professionally?
Do you want more group cohesion and ideas on how to convert challenges?
Do you want to build trust to make your team as open as possible?
If so, you are in the right place to resolve conflict and interpersonal issues! Get started by finding answers to the questions that matter.

Strategic Communication Strategies #1:  Ask Individuals for Their Input

  1. What would you do first if you became the owner of this business?
  2. What do I need to know about your work that I may not know?
  3. What do you need to know about the business that you don’t already know?
  4. What seems to work well here?
  5. What doesn’t work so well?
  6. What opportunities do you see that we’re really not exploiting?
  7. What problems do you see ahead that we’re not discussing?
  8. What do customers/members say to you about our product or service?

Strategic Communication Strategies #2:  Get Feedback from Colleagues and Leadership about Team Members

Clients have asked me to conduct 360 interviews with individuals who they want to promote or who need professional development.  Below you will find a few key questions which will reveal how others see the team member.  Once I interview from 5-10 key individuals I create a report to share with the coaching client.  I make sure that he or she will not know who responded and always look for patterns.

 1.   What are the strengths of _____?
 2.   What 3 things does_____ need to do to make a promotion?
 3.   What does ____ need to stop, continue and change?

I have many more revealing questions which I share with the coaching client.  If you decide to do this make sure that the person who conducts the interviews is trustworthy.  Feel free to contact me to find out how I can help you interview your employee’s leaders, colleagues, and clients.  I create a report and share this with the employee.  I always spin the information that all the information is helpful.  I discuss how we ALL have blind spots if the client tells me that he or she does not agree or trust the people who I interview.

I want to hear from you!

CLICK HERE to send me your questions about conducting 360 interviews for your team.  What is your experience with 360 interviews?  How have they helped and what have been some of the obstacles?

Until next time,

This is Joyce Weiss, Communication Strategist and Coach

You can start tackling tough conversations with bullies, different generations, and even narcissists once you learn the powerful strategies. I will do whatever it takes to help you improve your quality of life.  360 interviews are powerful tools to move your organization forward.  This is a great time to discover the benefits if you have never conducted them in your organization.
