Breaking News! Dysfunctional Cultures Never Work

cartoon oops fb out of timeHow many times do we have to see the same dysfunctional scenes play out about governmental agencies or corporate teams when transparency or trust don’t exist?  Reducing conflict in the workplace is important in all sizes of organizations.  The following are culture busters that guarantee a culture to crash:

  • Mistakes are hidden
  • People are afraid to speak up
  • Confusion on who to trust or even talk to
  • Morale is at a all time low
  • Lack of transparent leaders
  • etc, etc

We saw this when the leaders of the Secret Service tried covering up for the numerous blunders concerning the President of the United States. … [Continue reading]

It Doesn’t Take A Wrecking Ball to Knock Down Social Barriers

  • Copy (2) of photos from juicer 030Do you have bullies harassing minorities at work?
  • Is there a lot of We versus They going on?
  • Are people telling jokes that make others feel uncomfortable?
  • Are some of your team members silent at meetings and you don’t know why?

I find that many leaders don’t think that they have diversity issues.  People don’t usually bring up uncomfortable issues about gender, race, culture, generations, sexual orientation, religion, mentally or physically challenged.  Start listening for jokes that insult diversity issues or bullying from the tough guy or gal.  I tell my clients, I can’t change you if you are prejudiced.  I can strongly suggest that you keep that prejudice at home in order to work as a team.  Believe me when I say that this business conflict resolution consultant does what I can to open up everyone’s minds.  It does not always work, but I sure do my best! The conversations are never dull during these trainings!

My logo says it all:  joyce-email-logoWhen you have respect, you can resolve issues and get positive results.

My last post included a diversity exercise for you to use at future meetings to take down diversity barriers.  Thanks to those of you who sent me private emails sharing
your diversity issues.  This post will give you ideas to reduce conflict in the workplace…to increase respect.

If you use only a few of these suggestions you will realize that social barriers are about as thick as a piece of paper!

Click here for my post on the powerful diversity exercise that I use in my trainings.

2 4 6 8…Who Do You Appreciate? Employees!

Do you want to  cartoon booste office morale

  • Build morale?
  • Improve team spirit?
  • Get people talking about something positive for a change?

This article has strategies that my clients use and they receive GREAT results.  They liberate their team so they WANT to come to work.

Read this short article on Quick Questions to Check Your  Team’s Intentions for more ideas on how to get input from your team,

1. Celebrate Small Wins:

•   Birthdays
•   Work oriented accomplishments increase morale

2. Manage the Junk Pile:

•   Ask the following question to your team:  “The most demeaning, annoying, and humiliating rule/procedure/form/regulation/policy with which I have to live with
     is…”

3. Crystallize your mission:  Ask…

•   What am I doing that gets in the way of achieving this goal?
•   What am I doing to sabotage it?
•   Launch a campaign to eliminate these mission-stoppers

4. Appreciate them now:

•   Write notes to two or three people each week (taking risks, speaking well on the telephone, educating themselves, handling a tough member).

 5. See windows of opportunity:

•   Organize a team to visit other organizations
•   Study their leadership training, employee involvement, managing change, hiring, quality assurance, etc.

Thoughts From Joyce

These 5 strategies are just the tip of the iceberg.  I will be including a powerful interview in a future blog from the QUEEN of Morale Boosters, Harriet Meyerson who developed ConfidenceCenter.com.  She will give you ideas like the ones included in this article to help you reduce conflict in the workplace and bring back smiles to even the doubting team members.  Look for this interview soon.

Please let me know what you or your company does to appreciate employees.  I will send a copy of my booklet, 19 Secrets for Successfully Navigating Life’s Potholes, Ruts and Obstacles if I use your ideas in a future blog.

Hello…Is Anyone Listening?

Do you know how your team really feels about work?cartoon oops fb out of time
Do they give you ideas on how to improve processes?
Do they feel comfortable coming to you with ideas on how to improve morale?

The most important question is…Do you want to know the answers to these questions?

Hello…Is anyone listening?
Both leaders and employees tell me that their ideas are not listened to at work.  As a result I’ve been talking a lot about RESPECT in my trainings.  We all need to feel comfortable to express ourselves.  The challenge is – not everyone wants to hear constructive feedback.  There is an art on how to give and receive constructive feedback.

Check out this video and article on Confused about Constructive Feedback?

The following questions will help you create an environment of RESPECT

  • What are 3 things I do that you like and dislike?
  • What can we do about this?
  • How do you think we can improve meetings?
  • Do you think some employees get better treatment?
  • What would you do first if you became the leader of this business?
  • What should I know about your work that I don’t know?
  • What do you need to know about the business that you don’t know?
  • Do you feel confident to speak your mind without worrying about negative consequences?

Thoughts from Joyce

The questions above are great ways to start removing barriers.  Make sure that you are open to this constructive information.  Train your team how to give feedback.  Tell them that this is NOT the time to become sarcastic, negative, or silent.  It is your way of showing that you want to listen to their ideas.  Once they give their feedback, tell them what you plan on doing or not doing as a result of this conversation.  Feel free to contact me with questions if this is new for you or if you want more details on how to have a successful conversation with your team.  Let me know the results after you ask these questions.
