Powerful Secrets to Liberate Your Team

get new employees In the last blog post you read how Daniel Pink (author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us) describes motivation 1 and 2. This blog post will cover how to reduce conflict in the workplace and liberate your team.

Motivation 3 is about 3 of my favorite words…quality and continual improvement. Daniel Pink tells us that “Human beings have an innate inner drive to be autonomous, self determined, and connected to one another. And when that drive is liberated, people achieve more and live richer lives. People are devoted to becoming better and better at something that matters. It connects that quest for excellence to a larger purpose.”

ROWE: Results Only Work Environment

The ROWE environment is one where people can get the work done how they want and wherever they want as long as they get it done. It’s all about creating conditions for people to do their best work.

  • Meddius a software company promotes an environment where people focus on doing the work and not on being judged for wanting to go to their daughter’s soccer game. It’s not about the money…it’s about the feeling of freedom and autonomy.
  • Atlassian an Australian software company encourages employees to spend a day working on a problem they want to solve, even if it isn’t part of their regular job. They work 24 hours on solving a problem and share their discoveries the next day with their team. Many great ideas come out of this problem solving day. The management serves chocolate cake and beer during the 24 hours.
  • Netflix the company that offers us movies or TV series allows employees to take as much time off as long as they get their work done or covered. They focus on what people get done and not how many hours or days they worked.

Thoughts from Joyce

You may be thinking something like…”Joyce, this sounds really interesting BUT this will not work in my company or with my team. I realize that your corporate structure may not “allow” this kind of liberation. I do encourage you to be open and to see how you can make some realistic changes to start liberating your people.

The most important ingredient in this entire blog is to make sure you have people working at your company who want to be autonomous. They must have a growing mindset. You need to trust them. They need to do quality work. Another words…Do you have a team who can be liberated on their own watch? Can they be autonomous? If not, none of these ideas will work. The next blog post will give more strategies on how to liberate your team.

Employee Engagement Rocks!

cartoon booste office moraleI just attended a very productive few days at the
MI Lean Consortium Conference in Traverse City MI.
I will be sharing some of the “gems” that I learned in the next few blog posts.

LEAN Thinking: Eliminate waste and maximize profits

Andy Dillon, State of MI Treasurer was one of the keynote speakers.

He told us how MI has saved money and increased productivity by using LEAN concepts.

Here are key ideas from his speech:

  • People do things wrong for so long that they don’t know if the system is broken
  • Know your weaknesses and hire people who can fill those gaps
  • Everyone needs to be trained in LEAN in order for it to be successful
  • Leaders not only have to buy into the LEAN concepts…they have to be part of the change

Mr. Dillon and his team spoke to numerous state employees and REALLY heard what was needed
to get more employee engagement. As a result morale and productivity went up after employees
had a chance to share ideas on how to improve things for both citizens and themselves.

The idea is…don’t ask for input unless you will do something about it!

You may be wondering…Joyce, what is your interest in LEAN Thinking?
Once there is change, there is conflict.
I will be assisting LEAN consultants on how to manage conflict.

It takes a while for people to like and understands LEAN thinking.
There will always be the naysayers who complain and try to derail the process.
LEAN consultants use several tools to help change and I will help make the process move forward.

I will be learning about the concepts and start taking courses through the MI Lean Consortium
because I see such value and the results are over whelming.

Please share if you use LEAN Thinking concepts and how they have helped.
Also share frustrations that you have experienced and we can start an interesting conversation
on how to move forward.

Do You Remember Your First Bike Ride?

I hope you enjoy another story taken from my book, Take the Ride of Your Life!

Monica’s Story

Monica, a freelance web designer, has an incredibly positive outlook
today, especially as a woman who overcame depression.
She tells of her first bike, a blue one. Her dad taught her how to
ride and she learned very fast. “Dad was always very cautious, whether
it was when I learned to ride a bike or when I started to date.”
When she learned how to ride a bike it helped her gain more independence.
“I remember riding farther and farther away, toward more forbidden places.”

Monica’s Bike Lessons

As a parent, she enjoyed teaching her sons to ride their bikes.
“My older boy learned to balance on his bike when we removed the pedals.
He would get up really early and practice before school.
Once he found his balance, we reattached the pedals.
Now he’s off exploring with his friends and even going off-road.

What to do When You Fall Off your “Bike“

“Sure, he’s had some bad falls.
But what is so fascinating is that before he learned to ride, he was very cautious.
The occasional scrape would reduce him to tears.
Now, he races up to the house, hops off the bike, puts on a Band-Aid, and he’s gone again.
He’s become so much braver — and tougher —since he got his ‘wheels.’

Joyce’s Bike Lesson Tip of the Day

I challenge you to ask yourself if you are a coach helping others grow
or a negative roadblock stopping any progress.
The choice is always there how we move forward.
So, get on your bike, enjoy the ride and slap on that Band-Aid to keep moving!

So, Do You Think You Have a Strong Team?

Skip the morning donuts and see your team get stronger!

Many people “think” that they have a strong team, yet reality does not always match this perception!
There are usually hidden agendas and conflict in the workplace.
Employees and leaders need to have an open forum to make sure that the team is as strong as possible.

You probably know that my role in all of this is to stir up conflict.
That’s right, I’m not kidding.
I find that some people don’t have these important communication skills.
I help people have tough conversations and give them the tools to improve conflict in the workplace.
There are many reasons why people don’t like to be open.

Do you see constant improvement as part of your team culture?

Here are more ideas how to make your team even stronger:

  • Leaders and people at all levels have opportunity to show what they can do.
  • Most work is done by small teams of peers, led by people who are knowledgeable about specific areas.
  • People are continually challenged – as well as supported – in ways that enable them to meet those challenges.
  • Managers coach instead of dictate.
  • Status is replaced by ability and valuable involvement.
  • Rewards are based on actual contribution.

Joyce’s Recommendation of a GREAT Book

question marksI just read a very powerful and interesting book that blew me away!

The ideas will help reduce conflict in the workplace and immediately improve morale.

You don’t need to be a leader to read this book.

Check out the book only if  you want to think about the importance of WHY you do the things you do and the impact on your future .

Simon Sinek has a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership all starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?”
His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers.

In 2009, Simon Sinek released the book “Start With Why” — a synopsis of the theory he has begun using to teach others how to become effective leaders and inspire change.

 Here are some key points that “spoke” to me.

  •  People don’t buy WHAT you do but WHY you do it.
  • WHY is a belief that is consistent with your values.
  • Trust emerges when another person or company is driven by things other than their own self gain.
  • When you share the same values with others you will earn their trust.
  • The role of a great leader is to create an environment where great ideas can happen.
    Steve Jobs did not come up with the ideas for the ipod…others in the company did.
  • Great leaders serve those who serve them.
    Costko takes care of their employees and the results are reciprocal.

 My WHY is that I get to inspire others to do things to make their life a bit easier.

I help people have tough conversations so they get a better night’s sleep.

Once I became clear on my WHY it is so much easier to connect with people who want what I offer to them.

Here is a direct quote from Start with Why

“If you believe what we believe and you believe that the things we do can help you, then we are better.
Our goal is to find clients who believe what we believe and work together so that we can all succeed.
We’re looking for people to stand shoulder to shoulder with us in pursuit of the same goal”

 As some of you know I have launched a new FREE communicate with impact assessment which includes a 15 minute phone evaluation.
