You Have an OK Team…Now Make it an A Team

cartoon High 5 Yes 009

You’ve worked hard to create a successful team.

People are getting along and things are going well…but you know that they can become more engaged.  You may want to improve accountability with some of your team members.  Morale is OK yet you want the environment to be a bit more positive.
This article is a good start for you to turn your team into an A team.

Here are your next steps to develop an even stronger team:

1.  Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the team.
It will be easier to assign tasks to team members.

2.  Agree on team rules.
Strong teams have written rules which they develop themselves. Start with these helpful rules: Tell a person when you don’t agree, don’t talk about people behind their backs, and never be late for trivial reasons.

3.  Find or create a team leader
Great teams don’t just happen. Find someone to take charge – whether it’s the manager or anyone interested in group leadership.

Thoughts from Joyce

My clients know that good is not good enough today due to stiff competition.  Our brainstorming sessions are always very exciting when we discuss ways to change how  teams communicate.  There is always a better way to communicate and conflict is there even if you think it is not present.  Think about your own team and what rules it can come up with to reduce conflict in the workplace.  I will write about the Code of Honor in the next article which will give you more ideas on how to do this.  Feel free to call me at 800.713.1926 to discuss how we could make your team into an A Team.

There is No I in Co-Worker but There is a WE

cartoon booste office moraleDo you include everyone in team meetings… even those who work on their own?
Do you want to reduce conflict in the workplace and improve communication?

What can you say and do to help others feel included? Team members who feel isolated are not going to be productive, especially when they want to be part of the team.  Of course some colleagues want to work on their own and don’t want to be part of team meetings.  We all have different behavioral and work styles.  Different equals different.  Different does NOT equal wrong!

Here are ideas to help others feel like they are an important part of the team:

1. What solutions do you have to help solve this problem?

2. I consider you to be a key team player and need your advice.

3. How do you think we can improve our staff meetings?

4. Go out to lunch with your team members.

Some of your  team members may feel left out and they don’t know how to express this feeling of isolation.  I suggest that everyone on your team do his or her best to be as inclusive as possible.  This may sound like something that you heard in high school yet I hear numerous clients tell me how they did not feel like part of the team when they did not share office space with colleagues or were in another building.  This one idea will improve morale immediately.

Great Leaders Ask The Right Questions

cartoon oops fb out of timeLeaders who really understand the importance of employee involvement ask their team for input.  This is nothing new!  This is something that many leaders don’t do.  You may ask…”Joyce, how can you say such a bold statement?”  I’m glad that you asked.  I have had the privilege of working with some of the greatest leaders in Corporate America.  The questions in this article come from my clients who learned how to grow from being a good leader to becoming great in his or her field.

Voltaire suggested that we “Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.”

Here are some thought-provoking questions you might pose. They will elicit ideas for doing things better:

 1. What would you do first if somehow you became the owner of this business tomorrow morning?

 2. What is the best use of your time? Your knowledge and abilities? How are they being wasted, if they are? What could you be doing that you are not doing?

3. What should I know about your work that I don’t know? What do you need to know about the business that you don’t know?

 4. What seems to you to work well here? Why? What doesn’t work so well? Why do you suppose it doesn’t?

 5. What opportunities do you see that we’re really not exploiting? What problems do you see ahead that we’re not aware of? What would you do about them?

6. What do customers say to you or reveal to you about our product(s) or service(s) – about price, quality, the competition? What three comments do you hear most frequently?

Quick Questions to Check Your Team’s Intentions

ask your team what opp accountable 9For any company to succeed, the people within the organization need to work together effectively. Without teamwork, details slip through the cracks, customers feel neglected, and the company’s profits quickly dry up.

But before you do yet another team building exercise, you need to assess where your people are now, as well as how your company’s culture is letting a lack of teamwork prevail. Resolving conflict in the workplace will be easier after you read this blog post.

Use the following five questions to gauge where everyone stands and what needs to change

 1. What negative behavior am I letting slip by?

Too many managers and leaders allow people to be negative. Employees say and do whatever they want, regardless of how their words or actions damage the team. Either the manager doesn’t know how to address the negative behavior, or it’s been going on for so long that it’s habit – it’s a part of the culture. But the longer you let it continue, the harder you have to work to bring everyone together. So nip any negativity in the bud now.

 2. What rules or policies do we need to get rid of?

Many companies have outdated policies and guidelines that may have worked when the economy was thriving, but during today’s economic times, the outdated rules ultimately hurt morale and hinder customer service. Your employees know which guidelines work and which ones don’t. Listen to them.

 3. What cliques do we need to discuss so everyone feels included?

Cliques aren’t just prevalent in high school; they’re a part of business life too. Unfortunately, negativity, gossip, and not feeling included are the things that drive star performers away. Whether people like their job or not, they need to feel a part of the company. If they feel uncomfortable, they’re not going to be their real selves. They’re going to be sarcastic rather than helpful, and won’t be willing to go the extra mile.

 4. What am I doing as a manager that is stopping everyone from working together?

Even though you want your staff to work together, some of your practices or work habits may in fact be sabotaging your team. Regardless of what you say, people will always do and respond to your actions – not your words. So find out how you might be contributing to the teamwork dilemma.

 5. What are we not going to allow?

All effective teams have a code of honor they follow – a list of values or ideals they’re going to live and work by no matter what. When your team decides what’s important and what’s not tolerated, they’ll have ownership of the ideas and will follow them.

 Let Teamwork Work for You

Teamwork is the essential key to a successful company. When everyone works together, projects get done (on time and on budget), creativity reigns, and people actually want to come to work every day. So use these five questions to get the teamwork engine running. Both you and your customers will be glad you did.  Conflict in the workplace will be resolved and you will have time to do what you want and need to do during your day.

Liberate Your Team With These 4 Easy Steps

 cartoon good attitude its free

Thoughts from Joyce

I’ve been meeting many people who share their stories on why they love working at their company…and these are NOT the owners or presidents!
You will experience their stories in future blogs.  Many of you know that I help people take on conflict and resolve it to get better results.

The other part of the equation is how to feel more engaged at work to resolve conflict in the workplace.  This post will help those of you who want 4 easy ways to start seeing smiles at work again.  Please call me if your team is experiencing hidden agendas, lack of responsibility and accountability because the ideas below will work only after you remove the communication issues. BUT if you have a good team and want to make the environment more positive…enjoy these tips.

How can you make your work environment more enjoyable? Increase motivation? Create an atmosphere where others share new ideas? Working with a team is at times tedious and contentious.  Bring on more cake!

The following ideas are a good starting point to liberate your team:

1. Celebrate small wins (birthdays)

2. Manage the junk pile (What is the most annoying rule we can eliminate?)

3. Appreciate them now (Write thank you notes to 2-3 people each week especially when people take risks, speak well to a customer/member, and handle a tough member.)

4. See windows of opportunity (Organize a team to visit other teams to see how they involve their employees)
