Professional Development Strategies to Manage Upward

Do you want to learn professional development strategies to help you work with your boss?
Have you ever worked with a bad boss?
Are you experiencing stress with leaders who you are working with now?
If so, you are in the right place!

Professional Development Strategy #1:  What to do if you have a bad boss

Most of my clients have had experience with both great and poor bosses.  The 3 examples below describe some of their experiences.  See if any of them sound familiar.  I will share more examples in future articles.

1.  The hands-off boss who doesn’t share details with you.
2.  The boss who is like a bull in a china shop and explodes during conversations with the team.
3.  The boss who closes down conversations when someone doesn’t agree with him or her.

Professional Development Strategy #2:  Know how to communicate with a hands-off boss

It’s important to let your boss know what you need from him or her.  One way to be taken seriously in the workplace is to ask for what you need.  Of course,  there is a risk to let others know.  If you don’t do this, you’ll find yourself frustrated and complain to colleagues without getting any results.  Let your boss know that you need more details to finish a project.  Ask who else you need to speak with in order to resolve issues.  This may seem obvious to some of you.  Many people have been treated so poorly at work that they fear even the smallest conversation with their boss.

Professional Development Strategy #3:  How to work with an explosive boss

Some of my clients have left companies because the pressure of working with a horrible boss caused them physical and mental stress.  I’m not suggesting that you suffer in silence.  I’m asking you to look at all options.  Go to other leaders in the company who you trust and ask them what you can do.  CAREFULLY plan the conversation with your boss when the time seems safe.  You can always start the conversation with, “I was caught off guard at the meeting when I was scolded how I treated a customer.  I want to hear how to improve my communication and would appreciate any future constructive feedback told to me in private.”  I know some of you are saying that you would never say this to your boss.  So, don’t.  Then think of another way to speak to him or her.  Suffering in silence is not an option.

Professional Development Strategy #4:  How to speak to a boss who shuts down the conversation

This is very common and again there are options besides not doing anything.  You can say, “I am frustrated when the team makes suggestions about improving the systems and our suggestions are ignored because our customers are demanding these changes.  We all want to make improvements and hope to make productive changes so we can help resolve our production challenges.”  Again, there is a risk with this kind of communication especially if you have a BAD boss.  Figure out what you and your team need to do in order to be heard.

Professional Development Strategy #5:  Thoughts from Joyce

Remember, “You get what you tolerate!”  We all need to look at how to communicate differently when we aren’t getting the desired results.  Always seek out support from trusted leaders within your company.  You’ll feel better about yourself and get the respect that you deserve when you take the initiative to have these tough conversations. The good news is that my clients who move into leadership roles do what they can NOT to behave like their poor bosses.  They learned what not to do with their team! 🙂

Career Development Strategies for Leaders Video

Are you a leader who wants to open up the lines of communication with your team?
If so you are in the right place!  Part of career development as a leader is to continually work on communication strategies. Part of career development as a leader is to continually work on communication strategies. First watch the short video below.  The leadership strategies follow the video.

Recap of the Video

I was traveling to Canada from Michigan with my friends.  My neighbor Mike was driving and the border guard asked him where he lived.  Mike said, “The United States.”  The guard asked in a very sarcastic way, “That’s a big place…where do you live?”  Mike said, “Michigan.”  Again the guard asked in a very condescending way, “That’s also a big place.”  This time, Mike answered, “West Bloomfield MI.” The guard let us through without asking any more questions.  We laughed the entire weekend about this communication faux pax.

The guard was correct in asking these important questions.  He didn’t have to be such a bully.

The same thing happens in our conversations.  We may express the best message and ask the greatest questions.  It’s how we say things that matter.

Hope you enjoy this short article on Career Development Strategies for Leaders.

Career Development Strategy #1

Tell your team that you are proud of them.  Many of my clients don’t realize how powerful their words can be with their team.  Make sure that you share how your team’s skills add to the success of the company.  This one strategy will go a LONG way especially when you are authentic and share details on their strengths.  Part of a strong leader is recognizing the strengths of others and helping them continually grow.

Career Development Strategy #2

Ask for their opinions.  Many of my clients tell me that when they start asking direct reports to share ideas on a new process, the lines of communication opens up.  Of course, you need to be willing to really listen and take their opinions seriously.

Career Development Strategy #3

Ask your team what they like and dislike about their jobs.  Turnover will be reduced when you keep your star employees from leaving.  Many times they have legitimate complaints.  They find new positions in another company because they are listened to by their new boss.  If you can’t deliver their requests, let them know why and make them feel listened to by asking them what you need to do keep them from leaving.  A client of mine recently saved a star employee from leaving by asking him what he needed that he was not getting from his current job.  The employee told his boss that he has been bored and feels his career development has been squelched.  The boss took him very seriously and enrolled the employee in an online course on leadership.  All is well!

Career Development Strategy #4

Ask what you need to do to make their work easier and what the company needs to do to create new processes.  This is an extension of strategy #3.  Leaders who accept total responsibility for the morale of their team have a better success rate.  A client of mine enjoyed her employment except when her ideas were discounted during meetings.  I helped her with a strategy to express this concern to her boss.  Miracles happened.  He heard her frustration and did not realize that he discounted her.  The responsibility is on the employee who allowed her boss to continually reject her ideas for many years.  She was on her way to look for a new position until she practiced what she would say to her boss.  She is getting stronger and is being listened to!  Remember, “You Get What YOU Tolerate!”

Keys to Develop The Next Generation in the Work Place

The Millennial generation in the work place can be a struggle or asset.
Are you a leader who wants to understand the millennial generation in the work place?
Do you want to keep your star millennials from jumping ship?
Great!  This article will provide you with 4 simple techniques to attract, develop and keep the next generation motivated.

Millennials matter because they are entering the workforce in larger numbers than any of their previous generations in the workplace!

Complaints From Leaders Who Work with the Millennial generation in the Work Place

Do these sound familiar?

  • They don’t have a good work ethic
  • When they are bored they leave and go to our competitor
  • I don’t know how to talk to them
  • They are always on their devices
  • They don’t know how to have a face to face conversation

I hear comments like this all the time from my clients who are frustrated with this next generation.  I challenge leaders to stop complaining or judging and start getting to know these bright young employees. Communication is improved once the bridges are removed…from both sides!

Key #1 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place:   Equality and Diversity

The next generation in the workplace seeks out employers with a strong record on equality and diversity.  Employers need to do more than “talk the talk”.  They must foster inclusive talent and advancement strategies.

Key #2 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place: Work-Life Balance

The next generation expects to have time in their life.  They want to live their life to the fullest.  Organizations need to recognize that work-life balance and flexibility is a talent-wide proposition.

Key #3 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place:  A Feedback Culture

Millennials welcome and expect regular feedback.  Yes, they are connected to the digital world!  Their preference is for critical feedback discussions to take place face to face.  Companies of choice understand this important need and train leaders to communicate directly and to have productive career development feedback sessions often.

Key#4 to Develop the Millennial Generation in the Work Place: Reputation is Very Important

Millennials want their work to have a purpose, to contribute something to the world and to be proud of their employer.  Companies need to develop community outreach programs more so than ever before to attract this vital generation

Joyce’s Thoughts on How to Develop the Next Generation in the Work Place

I will continue to share research on this important topic because my clients struggle with millennials.  The challenge is for all generations to be open and share their needs and expectations.  This is not new.  It is possible to remove generational barriers as long as the dialogue is judgment free.  The results are impressive after my clients put these keys into practice.  They really do work.

I will be including more detail on this topic for the next few articles.
