Powerful Secrets to Liberate Your Team

get new employees In the last blog post you read how Daniel Pink (author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us) describes motivation 1 and 2. This blog post will cover how to reduce conflict in the workplace and liberate your team.

Motivation 3 is about 3 of my favorite words…quality and continual improvement. Daniel Pink tells us that “Human beings have an innate inner drive to be autonomous, self determined, and connected to one another. And when that drive is liberated, people achieve more and live richer lives. People are devoted to becoming better and better at something that matters. It connects that quest for excellence to a larger purpose.”

ROWE: Results Only Work Environment

The ROWE environment is one where people can get the work done how they want and wherever they want as long as they get it done. It’s all about creating conditions for people to do their best work.

  • Meddius a software company promotes an environment where people focus on doing the work and not on being judged for wanting to go to their daughter’s soccer game. It’s not about the money…it’s about the feeling of freedom and autonomy.
  • Atlassian an Australian software company encourages employees to spend a day working on a problem they want to solve, even if it isn’t part of their regular job. They work 24 hours on solving a problem and share their discoveries the next day with their team. Many great ideas come out of this problem solving day. The management serves chocolate cake and beer during the 24 hours.
  • Netflix the company that offers us movies or TV series allows employees to take as much time off as long as they get their work done or covered. They focus on what people get done and not how many hours or days they worked.

Features of Autonomy

  • What people do
  • When they do it
  • How they do it
  • Whom they do it with

Liberated Behavior Emerges When People Have Autonomy Over the 4 T’s

  • Their task
  • Their time
  • Their Technique
  • Their Team

Thoughts from Joyce

You may be thinking something like…”Joyce, this sounds really interesting BUT this will not work in my company or with my team. I realize that your corporate structure may not “allow” this kind of liberation. I do encourage you to be open and to see how you can make some realistic changes to start liberating your people.

The most important ingredient in this entire blog is to make sure you have people working at your company who want to be autonomous. They must have a growing mindset. You need to trust them. They need to do quality work. Another words…Do you have a team who can be liberated on their own watch? Can they be autonomous? If not, none of these ideas will work. The next blog post will give more strategies on how to liberate your team.

Leadership Secrets Learned from Breaking Bad

breaking bad

I am a BIG fan of the TV series “Breaking Bad.”
It is intriguing to see how much positive hype is taking place right after
the powerful ending.
Many of the actors are giving such accolades to the entire writing team,
directors, producers  and staff.
They worked together for over 5 seasons and they still think of everyone
as a family.

So are you wondering…

“How in the world is the cast still feeling such a connection with each other?”

I heard the following statements in interviews from the show’s writers and actors.
They fit perfectly with the themes that I share with you weekly on dealing with conflict
in the workplace and improving communication.

Strong teams need to communicate openly in order to create an engaging environment.

Strong teams need to know:

1. “Tell me what you expect from me.”

2. “Give me an opportunity to perform.”

3. “Let me know how I’m getting along.”

4. “Give me guidance where I need it.”

5. “Recognize me for my contributions.”

Each actor and writer mentioned that they were able to ask these questions to directors and
producers. They helped create such a cohesive group of people.
Are these sentences being spoken in your workplace?

5 Ridiculously Simple Ways to Improve Your Team

conflict in meetingYou know those communications…the ones where you just can’t
pay attention or roll your eyes.

Have you ever been on a losing team? What would you have changed
if you were the leader?

Don’t set your team up for failure.
Whether you’re the team leader or a team member,
don’t let the following 5 scenarios happen in your office.

On a Losing Team, People:

1. Do not know what is expected.

2. Do not know how he/she is doing.

3. Cannot do the required skills.

4. Lack organizational support.

5. Have poor relationships.

What Can YOU Do When You See Your Team’s Success Dwindle?

1.  Ask questions and be clear about what is expected from your company, colleagues, and your boss.

2.  Find out how you are doing a few times/year and NOT just during evaluations.

3.  Know what the required skills are for you and others and get training immediately.

4.  Look for another job if there is no support from the top.

5.  You don’t have to like your colleagues.  Let go of old issues if they are getting in the way.
Do your best to change a negative situation into something a bit more manageable in order to
move forward.

Remember…YOU Get What YOU Tolerate!

Thoughts from Joyce

I know that these 5 ideas sound easy.  They are not always simple to follow.
Please write questions about your own conflict or communication situations at work.
You are not alone.  There is usually a second right answer once you brainstorm with an ally!

Cruel Words Take Root in Us-Learn to Focus on Positives Instead

conflict business man being blamedAt times my clients share stories about how their parents influenced them
either in a positive or negative way. It is amazing how many details many of
us remember-both the good and bad.
We all have our own stories and the content of this post is taken from my book,
Take the Ride of Your Life! Shift Gears from More Balance, Growth and Joy.

Hope that you enjoy it.

Tom’s Story

Tom’s dad drilled the classic “you’re a loser” mentality into his head at an early age.
But that doesn’t mean Tom became a loser.

Tom, a successful salesperson, was told at an early age not to believe
in himself. “You are a loser. You will never amount to anything.
You will never learn to ride your bike, either,” his father said.
Those cruel words pounded into Tom’s subconscious and took root.

Despite the expectation of failure and the utter lack of love and support,
Tom was determined to learn.
As an adult, he became obsessed with success at work.
“I cannot fail!” he would tell himself.

This became the entire focus of his life, affecting his family and even his health.
Rather than relishing his success, he was afraid of “falling off the bike” of his youth.
He did not realize he was a winner from the first time he “pedaled” with determination
to succeed on his own.

Hope for Tom!

Eventually, Tom was able to see all the positives in his life and discovered
that he trusted himself all along.
He realized he was not only strong and determined — he was a success!

What to do with Those “Falling Star Employees!”

cartoon good attitude its freeMany of my loyal readers have asked me to write about how to deal with “middle stars” and  “falling stars” on their team to reduce conflict in the workplace.

The biggest conflict is how NOT to burn out your “superstars” because they do what they do so well. At times leaders stop asking the “falling stars” because they under perform.

Are you asking yourself…”Joyce tell me all ready what do I do with these unmotivated people?”
Ok, here is how I have helped my clients get control of this issue.

Hit this link to share an important yet short video on “The Importance of Feeling Committed to Your Job” with your team.

Who are the “middle stars?:

  • Some days they are great and other days they are not so great.
  • They are inconsistent.
  • They may not want to be “superstars” and only want to do their work and go home.

Here’s some ideas on how to deal with “the middle stars.”

  • Are your expectations clear when you communicate with them?
  • Do they know how they will be held accountable?
  • Are they facing obstacles that are stopping them?
  • Can they be mentored by a “superstar?”

Remember, every person will not be a “superstar.”

  • These people can either move up and improve or move down and become a “falling star.”
  • You have to decide if they can be saved.
  • You can give them the tools and training.

Who are the “falling stars?”

  • This is usually not a large group.
  • Their impact WILL take up your valuable time.
  •  They fail to carry their fair share of the work.
  • They are uncooperative.
  • They are chronically late.
  • They are just getting by.
  •  They need to improve or be replaced

You are not doing your job if you are not taking care of this group!

You can involve both of these groups to see if they want to grow

  • Invite them to meetings and ask for their input.
  • Delegate easy tasks to see if they follow through.
  • Ask them to give short presentations to their team.

I coach my clients to tell every new employee that “dead weight” will not be tolerated.

Remember, you get what you tolerate!

Identify these people and either train them or find others who can take your company far into the future.

Concentrate on taking the “falling stars and middle stars” to the next level.

Recognize your “superstars” so they don’t disengage.

This will help you reduce conflict in the workplace immediately.

Your “superstars” will get the positive attention that they deserve and your “middle and falling stars” will learn what they need to do to continue being part of the team…or not.

Raising the bar of your organization will help you be successful in the future.
