How many times do we have to see the same dysfunctional scenes play out about governmental agencies or corporate teams when transparency or trust don’t exist? Reducing conflict in the workplace is important in all sizes of organizations. The following are culture busters that guarantee a culture to crash:
- Mistakes are hidden
- People are afraid to speak up
- Confusion on who to trust or even talk to
- Morale is at a all time low
- Lack of transparent leaders
- etc, etc
We saw this when the leaders of the Secret Service tried covering up for the numerous blunders concerning the President of the United States.
What can leaders do about this?
- Make mistakes a learning lesson
- Encourage people to speak up by rewarding this good behavior
- Make it clear who everyone needs to communicate to and who else they can go to if it is not their leader
- Hold open team meetings to develop continuous trust
