5 Action Steps to Kick Conflict to the Curb

Hello, Dear Kick Conflict to the Curb Readers!

The next 3 posts will include 5 new action steps to Kick Conflict to the Curb.  The action steps come from creating content for my virtual class and coaching clients. If you want more information on any of the action steps, do a search in the search bar on this site {JoyceWeiss.com}.

There are 20 action steps in total and I look forward to hearing which ones are your favorite ones.

Action Steps # 1: Use the Power Talk Formula Team Building | ACTION STEPS

This is such an important strategy to keep in your toolbox because it works!

Here’s the Formula:
“I am…” (Your emotional response)

“When I…” (Nonjudgmental observation)

“Because…” (How it affects you)

I am frustrated when boundaries are not followed because we just conducted a meeting on this important issue for our team.

This powerful statement is all about:

  • Sharing your concern
  • It’s not judgmental or sarcastic – just stating the facts

Your next step is to go deeper with those who don’t follow the new department rules.

Action Step #2: Use Verbal Aikido

This is my clients’ favorite strategy to learn and use. I’ve heard many of you share your experience with verbal aikido and I’m thrilled about this. 🙂

Verbal Aikido:

  • Take back control when you pull back, not push back
  • Repeat the same words or agree with the bully
  • Step into the GAP-Your Safe Place to think of the best response

Action Step #3: Ask a Positive Question to the Negative Person

action steps

This action step may change the mindset of the negative person. Even if it doesn’t at least this is a reminder that you can leave the conversation if the negativity gets out of line.

A great question to use is:  “What is something good that happened to you today?”  This will force a positive response.

Action Steps #4: Create a Code of Conduct with Your Team

A code of conduct helps set the tone and expectations of everyone on the team. It’s best to have someone lead the discussion who is NOT the leader or boss. All department or team members need to be present to get a good representation and better results.

The 3 article links below will give you more details on how to use this powerful action step.

Toolbox Alert #1:  A Code of Conduct Reinforces Accountability

Toolbox Alert #2: A Code of Conduct Improves the Team

Toolbox Alert #3: A Code of Conduct Really Works

Action Steps #5: Improve Morale by Giving a Day Off to an Employee Who Finds a New Hire

This one action step will give you a lot of traction with your company.  Your employees know the company. When they recommend a friend or colleague, it works out well {most of the time} because they want to work with like-minded individuals.

Joyce, What are Your Thoughts About These 5 Action Steps?

I’m glad you asked! 😉  Verbal Aikido and the Power Talk Formula are both parts of the Weiss Communication Success Plan.  Once you learn and implement these 2 strategies, you will transform your communication from not being heard to feeling confident to use your voice.

The great news is that you will be the first group to know when I launch my next Kick Conflict to the Curb Virtual Class in April.  Look for announcements because this is where we take strategies and practice during the live classes so you can put them to use immediately.

The code of conduct and appreciating employees for bringing in new hires help improve morale because people feel heard.

Please share which action step is your favorite, so far.

A Powerful Interview with Kristie Stocker About Leadership and Purpose

Hey, Dear Readers of Kick Conflict to the Curb Weekly Update! 🙂

Are you ready to learn information that you can share at work about leadership and purpose?

I met our guest speaker at a National Speaker’s Association meeting a few years ago. I knew our paths would cross because she was full of energy, leadership skills, and so much fun.  Pop some popcorn and learn from Kristie Stocker – success coach and leadership speaker.

Here’s the video.

Here are the Questions that I asked Kristie About Leadership and Purpose:

{You will find more details on the video – this is the readers’ digest portion. :)}

1.  The word purpose is thrown around all the time, it seems a bit “woo”. Is it really that important to weave into the business world?
Kristie’s Answer:  “Purpose for the team AND company is necessary.”

2.  Can someone’s purpose change?
Kristie’s Answer:  “Yes! Different life experiences, situations, and happiness equals innovation.  Individuals and companies change their purpose due to so many factors.

3.  What happens when they don’t have a sense of purpose?
Kristie’s answer:  “Tell-tale signs like turnover, lack of engagement, no sense of community, and even mental health are all influences on purpose.

4.  What can leaders do to connect more with their purpose?
Kristie’s answer: “Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions and go deep.”

5. How can leaders help their employees?
Kristie’s answer: “Understand motivators, personalities, pair their strengths, coach them to grow, and don’t be afraid to let them go.”

About Kristie Stocker

A Motivational Quote to Remember During Healthy Conflict

Healthy Conflict is a term that surprises people at times.  Yes, conflict can be both healthy and unhealthy.

The next time you need to give constructive feedback, make sure it’s constructive (healthy conflict) and not sarcastic and full of revenge.
This is a great quote to remember when others give you destructive feedback.  Remember this person doesn’t have the great communication skills that you have while you are learning how to be a MASTER Communicator while reading these articles! 🙂 Just saying.

Every coaching client who works with me knows the importance of getting great results during tough conversations and not concentrating on being right.

This One Idea Will Reduce Negativity in the Workplace

Are you ready to read about one idea that will reduce negativity in the workplace?

A few years ago I watched a hearing between the Secret Service Director and Congress. It was extremely heated and I knew that I was going to write about this interaction in a future article. Let me refresh your memory. A few agents drank alcohol at a retirement party. After leaving the party, they crashed their car into the white house. It was on international news for several days.

Congress asked important and tough questions to the Secret Service Director and he repeatedly skirted all issues. Congressmen and women actually said, “What are you going to do about it?” The Director said, “I first need to get all of the facts.” Several members of Congress said the same thing, “Why not fire the agents on the spot? You need to make the hard decisions.” The Director was very nervous and it almost sounded like he was covering up the “real story.”

The bottom line is that there was a huge communication breakdown in the Department. Supposedly the Director did not hear about this incident for a few days. I ask the question, why didn’t he hear about this sooner?

Reasons why there is negativity in the workplace:bullies at work | communication challenge | negativity in the workplace

  • Fear of retribution
  • Covering-up for each other
  • Dysfunctional cultural barriers
  • The wrong fit for roles and job responsibilities
  • Not knowing who to go to for answers
  • Unclear expectations
  • Too much red tape

Why Humility is So Important These Days!

  • Do you know why humility is so important these days?
  • Have you thought about how others need to use humility more in their life? {Not sounding judgmental here, just asking. :)}

The video and article below describe the characteristics of why humility is so important. I will ask you a couple more questions at the end of this post. Sound good?

https://vimeo.com/501855175

Why Humility is so Important Strategy 1:  Humility is NOT a Weakness

Humility is:

  • Knowing that you don’t have all the answers. This is a sign of strength!
  • Realizing when you need help. Another sign of strength!
  • This leads to Mastery because it’s all about self-improvement.

Zoom is a perfect example. I became a Certified Virtual Presenter through e-speakers.  They taught me how to use all the gadgets like breakout rooms, chat, camera skills, and knowing what to do when you get kicked out due to power issues. We’ve all seen leaders on zoom and other platforms who crack under pressure if the screen isn’t’ shared or they don’t how to control the mute button when there are dogs barking or babies crying.

I now know why humility is so important after becoming certified. I’ve experienced the following challenges:

  • the screen froze
  • share screen function didn’t work
  • the microphone wasn’t working
  • the internet was weak and kept on kicking us out of the meeting

In the past, I was not in control of the meeting and let the technology issues take over the entire training. This was a hard lesson to learn. If I can do this, so can you! Now, the reality is that I laugh during virtual training when IT issues happen. I’m not in charge of the internet – neither are you! We can still be human and when this happens. People are very forgiving. When we are in control of a meeting, we need to be role models for those who may not understand why humility is so important. We need to show them that we are not perfect. Imagine that!

Why Humility is so Important Strategy 2:  Joyce’s Challenge for YOU

I challenge you to:

      1. Know when you need help. Remember this is a sign of strength. Masterminds are hotter than ever because they work. I’m in 2 and they have helped me and all the mastermind members grow constantly.

     2. Stay curious.  Keep taking classes. There is the BEST training on youtube.  Online courses are easy to find. My click funnel experts, Doresa Ibrahim and Shasta Grifka are testing my humility at this time. They are teaching me a new platform to host our new online courses and contacts. It’s new, hard, and not fun to learn. Even though I realize that we will get through this after becoming more familiar with the A-Z client system, BUT it’s hard and I’m kicking all the way to the finish line. I’m being real here, dear readers! The good news is that being curious is what started us to find a better platform. Humility is kicking in for me for sure. It’s also hard to be patient. Thanks to Doresa and Shasta for being so understanding and it’s great that I trust both of them. Hopefully, they won’t fire me as a client for being so darn real.  🙂 Does this sound familiar to any of you?

   3. Trust yourself when things are not perfect.  Mistakes are part of mastery. You already know this. It’s still not easy showing our humility at times. It’s worth having such a belief in yourself and others who may be coaching you that you will get through it.

  4. Be comfortable in your own skin.  There will be times when discomfort appears. That’s also a good sign. This could mean it’s a learning lesson or life is telling you something new about your own humility. Pay attention. Learn. Be curious. It’s all good.
