More Coping Skills When Dealing with a Narcissist

We are going to continue the conversation about narcissists because many of you have sent me private emails encouraging me to do so.  The next few posts will even go deeper on this frustrating personality disorder.

Enjoy this short video on how to deal with Narcissists

Coping Guidelines

  • Recognize when you are with someone who repeatedly evokes shame, anger and idealizes others
  • Plan ahead how to set boundaries since they excel at the control game
  • Find others who can support you
  • Try not to personalize since they do this to others
  • Think of Narcissists as a 2 year old on the inside
  • Document abuses and excuses for your own record to protect yourself

How to Change a Bullying Environment

Do you want to figure out how to change a bullying environment?
Does your company allow bullies to rule the board room?Do you want to find out more about bullies?

If so, this blog is for you!  Please watch the video below.

How to Start Changing a Bullying Environment

  • Create an anti-bullying policy
  • Define bullying and declare it unacceptable
  • Make enforcement procedures
  • Education and training are critical
  • Start documenting adverse impact
  • Most bullies would stop if the rules change and bullying was punished

Bullying is Unreported

  • 40% of targets never tell their employers
  • Bullying is erroneously branded as conflict or difference in personality sytles
  • Bullying is a form of VIOLENCE

Starting a Bully Behavior Framework

  • Single unprofessional incident:  There needs to be an informal intervention over coffee stating options for positive communication
  • Level 1:  Apparent pattern…Inform the bully that you will start documenting the behavior
  • Level 2:  Authority Intervention…Be supportive and express clear expectations about expected change
  • Level 3:  Disciplinary Intervention…If there is no change be clear about the company’s rules about discipline and take immediate action

Do You Know Bullies at Work or Home?

This post will identify types of bullies who exist.  As you watch the video start to think if you may have a bullying issue at work.

Types of Bullies

  • The Screaming Mimi or Verbal Bully:
He or she screams or throws things.  Words hurt and the bully humiliates the target.
  • The Constant Critic:
He or she tells everyone how incompetent the target is at work…usually behind the target’s back.  This can lead to career destruction for the target if leaders don’t know how to control the situation.
  • The 2 Headed Snake Bully:
    Destroys the target with rumors.
  • The Gatekeeper Bully:
Withholds resources necessary for targets to succeed.
  • The Sadistic or Narcissist Bully
    Lacks empathy towards others.
  • The Physical Bully:
Actually hits the target or tables in a violent way.
  • The Serial Bully:
He or she seems charming while the target is looked upon as a pathetic victim.
  • The Group Bully:
He or she likes being part of the gang of “mean boys and girls” like in high school.

Do Any of These Bullies Sound Familiar?
