Career Development Tips: Be Your Own Best Advocate |Video

Are you ready to discover career development tips to use for yourself or your direct reports?

Certified Professional Coach, Lori Shook presented the ideas I’m sharing in this video to the World of Business and Executive Coaching Summit.

So how can you help yourself or your direct reports discover how to be their own best advocate?
Here’s a possible strategy:  Discover their internal inner board of directors.

I have used the exercise with coaching clients and the results are stellar.

Human Resource clients consider me their partner: especially when they have no time to coach:

  • Emerging leaders to grow
  • Employees who need to use their voice without losing their cool
  • Managers who need to control difficult team members

The video below gives you ideas to get you started with this unique exercise.

Here are EASY career development tips to help you identify your internal board of directors

I call this our internal wisdom.

We all have internal voices or characters that influence our behaviors. When we name them, we will be able to use them as resources.

There are NO good or bad board members. Some will be more useful than others at different times.

Here are several of the inner boards that my clients discovered:

  • The energizer
  • Frankenstein
  • Am I good enough?
  • Risk-averse
  • Cheerleader
  • Enjoy the journey
  • Leader
  • Controller

Start by asking these questions to add to your career development tips toolbox:

  • What is an inner voice that you really trust?
  • Which inner characters help you succeed?
  • What are the inner impulses that get in your way in important situations?

Define your board of directors and give them a name

  • Which of your inner board will help you/hurt you/stop you?
  • Invite the board members you want to use more often
  • Find ways to manage the uninvited ones
  • Take ownership of your behaviors

Look for my video next week which will cover more ideas on your Inner Board.

2 Surprising Tips to Make Your Relationships Better |Video

Are you ready for two easy and surprising tips to make your relationships better?

This week’s video shows you how to get better results even during a difficult conversation.

Coaching clients get powerful results after practicing these strategies with me. It’s surprisingly easy.

Stephen R. Covey said, “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand: they listen with the intent to reply.”

Improve Your Relationships Tip #1: Explore From the Other Person’s Shoes

Here are two examples:

  • “I’d be pretty mad if I were in your shoes.”
  • “I can see why you may say this.”

These statements show that you are listening deeply. Your relationships will improve when others see that you are really with them.

Make Better Relationships Tip # 2: Propose a Harmonious Outcome

The following examples show you how easy it is:

  • “What bothers you most about the person?”
  • “How can you explain your reason for acting this way?”

You are not judging, just asking two exploratory questions to help the other person resolve his or her situation.

Joyce, What Are Your Thoughts?

I’m glad you asked. 🙂
Just listen to others communicate. It won’t take long for you to figure out that most people listen only to reply. They are not with the other person and it’s so evident.

Remember Stephen Covey’s quote:
“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand: they listen with the intent to reply.”

  • Are you tired of not resolving conflict with the same person?

The 2-minute video below gives you 2 EASY Tips to get you started.

Difficult Conversations Tip #1

Diffuse conflicts by responding consciously rather than automatically.

This tip works because you are in control of how you want to react.
You consciously think about this versus automatically opening your mouth without giving any thought.
Aren’t you glad you’re reading this post? 🙂

Difficult Conversations Tip # 2

Get into THE GAP by taking a breath or brief silence on how you want to express yourself.
Especially when you are off-center with another person.

Additionally, think if this is the best time to say something or cool off and respond later.

Many times we forget that we have control over these tough conversations.

There are many choices. The challenge is that we automatically respond without thinking.
This is what gets us into trouble.

How to Stop Your Top Talent Leaving | Video

Is your top talent leaving?

Do you know why they leave?

Do you want to do something about this?

Watch the video below to discover 3 powerful phrases that can stop your stars from leaving your company.

Are you ready to discover how to lower the chance of this from happening?

Let’s address the elephant in the room

Many leaders don’t even ask the reason why top talent is leaving.

They don’t have the skills or don’t know that asking WHY can help keep star employees from exiting.
Coaching clients who implement these communication skills report back to me with some great news. Additionally, they ask hard questions to these great employees.
Many times this important discussion stopped their employees from leaving the company.

Step 1: Stop Your Top Talent Leaving

Help them feel heard.

Here’s an example:
An HR Professional client, Bob described how his employee Sue was very productive but had lost her motivation.
Bob spoke to Sue and discovered that Sue was risk-averse.

Things were changing too fast for her. She didn’t feel secure or heard.
Additionally, Bob asked Sue how he could help her feel more secure.

Step 2: Stop Your Top Talent Leaving

Here are phrases that will help you immediately:

  • Tell me more
  • I’m curious
  • I noticed

This is how Bob used these powerful communication strategies:

“I noticed that normally you add a lot to our team. Lately, I haven’t heard you share. Is everything ok?”

First Sue opened up about how she doesn’t do well when things change so rapidly. Next, she felt less stressed when Bob took the time to ask her how he could help. And, by listening to Sue’s challenges.

These phrases help set the stage for having an open conversation. Plus the other person feels heard.
