An Inspirational Story About Hope to Power Your Life

Did you ever meet a stranger who shared an inspirational story that put a smile on your face?

This post is about a server I met in a hotel in Lisbon, Portugal.

My husband and I arrived at the hotel a few days before going on a Viking Riverboat Cruise on the Duoro River.
We were starved and decided to get lunch at the hotel before exploring Lisbon.

Our server seemed pleasant and took our order. We didn’t know that our conversation would be so heartwarming.
Those of you who know me realize that I believe in the power of questions. As a communication coach, I understand how asking the right questions increases the chance of clients going deep and finding answers on their own.

The Question Joyce Asked that Created this Inspirational Story inspirational story

I asked Antonio, “Have you always lived in Lisbon?” He smiled and said, “No, I was born in London and discovered an important lesson while taking a train to work in London.” I said, “What lesson did you learn, Antonio?”

Antonio described the passengers’ faces while riding on the train. They were sad, exhausted, and lackluster.
He told us that people usually talk about the lousy weather and how it negatively impacts them.

This was when Antonio got his “aha moment!” He asked himself if he was living his what if.

  • What if he left London to explore a better life?
  • What if he could look for different opportunities?

He went home and shared this revelation with his mom. She understood totally and felt the same way.

More Details About Antonio’s Inspirational Story

Antonio heard that there were many opportunities in Lisbon. And he decided to spend the summer finding out for himself.
On his first day on the job at the hotel, his new colleagues were welcoming. Additionally, they invited him to join them for a drink after work.

Antonio immediately called his mom and said, “What’s wrong with these people? They are too friendly, and I don’t trust them.” His mom told Antonio to accept their invitation and make the most of the evening.

This was the beginning of Antonio’s new and happy life. People love living in Lisbon, and their smiles and passion for living are proof.

Antonio found out that the “what if” question he asked himself in London opened up a new world for him. He is extremely happy working and living in Lisbon. He now has a new question that he asks himself: What’s next?

He is thinking of many new options that he has never seen before. The great news is that his mom just joined him and feels the same way about her life.

Joyce’s Thoughts About Antonio’s Inspirational Story

I immediately asked Antonio if I could interview him for my blog. I will include the interview in a future article.

What about you? How would you answer the following questions:

  • Am I living my what if?
  • What do I need to change to find new opportunities right in front of me?
  • What’s my what next?
  • Am I open to discovering new possibilities for my future that I never saw before?

I am asking myself the same questions. Additionally, it’s exciting to discover opportunities right in front of my nose.
You will hear about these new ideas in future articles! 🙂

Effectively Deal with Passive-Aggressive Behavior | Video 2

Are you ready to discover how to ask strong coaching questions to those difficult people who exhibit passive-aggressive behavior?

If so, this video is for you.

I’ll share a few coaching questions that you can begin using with the person with this difficult condition.
Plus, you’ll learn action steps to take.

You’ll find the link to video 1 in the series “Effectively Deal with Passive-Aggressive Behavior” below this post.

Let’s get real: This conversation won’t be easy. I suggest that you start out easy. This may be a good time for you to bring up coaching to this person If the communication backfires.

Here are a few questions to get you started with those who exhibit passive-aggressive behavior:

  • Do you put off doing things as a way to punish others?
  • What is the truth that needs expressing?
  • What effects does this have on your life/work/relationships?

I use these questions when coaching clients who exhibit passive-aggressive behavior and seek my guidance.
I repeat you can start off using 1 question just to test the water.

Passive-Aggressive Behavior is Usually Tough to Handle on Our Own

  • It isn’t easy to change passive-aggressive behavior
  • Standing up for yourself is difficult
  • Passive-aggressive behavior is an easier way for them to deal with emotions without having to confront the source of their anger.

I hope these strategies will help you to effectively deal with passive-aggressive behavior.

I’m here if you want a private session or to help you create a successful plan and practice the skills you learned in this video.
Call me at 248.681.5831 or send me an email and we can set up a couple of sessions that will reduce your inner peace.

2 Ways to Effectively Deal with Passive-Aggressive Behavior | Video 1

Do you work or live with a person who exhibits passive-aggressive behavior?
Are you ready to find out how to communicate with this person in a productive way?

If so this video below is just for you.

Several coaching clients have discussed their challenges dealing with passive/aggressive behavior with either family or colleagues.
I need to be clear that there is passive-aggressive behavior, not people.
This makes it less personable and more manageable.

Definition of Passive-Aggressive Behavior

Passive-aggressive behavior is expressing negative feelings indirectly instead of openly talking about them.
Additionally, they may feel angry, resentful, or frustrated. But they act neutral, pleasant, or even cheerful. Plus they find indirect ways to show how they really feel.

Do these 3 examples sound familiar to you?

1. A girlfriend was mad at her boyfriend, Bruce. She didn’t tell him that she was upset.
Her passive-aggressive behavior was blasting the volume of the music which was unbearable for Bruce to hear.
Bruce is my client and we discussed this challenging behavior. He now realizes that he needs to speak directly to his girlfriend when she shows these tendencies.

2. An aunt said the following to her niece, Kate: “Kate, I like your new haircut because it makes your face slimmer.”
During our coaching session, Kate practiced how to answer her aunt in future conversations. Kate now understands this behavior. She communicates with her aunt directly and lets her know that comments about her weight are hurtful.

3. Lisa, An HR professional discussed her frustration with a direct report, Jim who was always late to meetings. We explored Jim’s passive-aggressive behavior.
Additionally, Lisa told Jim that he is not invited to future meetings because his behavior is demoralizing to the team. Jim was given one more chance and he caught on very quickly.

You’ve Got to Laugh: Why a Sense of Humor Helps in Dark Times

humor

I learned why a sense of humor helps in dark times during the death and dying course during my coaching program.

Our professor invited several parents whose children died to speak to our class.

All of them shared how the one thing that got them through the grieving process was remembering funny events when their children were healthy.

Knowing that the role of humor during dark times had a huge impact on my life when my parents passed away.

I didn’t wear black to their funerals. Additionally, I did what I could to remember the fun times that I shared with my parents. It took a while to get the horrendous thoughts about their illness out of my mind. Once that happened, I was able to concentrate on all the good times that we shared.

Of course, it takes time to grieve for all of us. Humor helped me heal.

Mark Twain is one of my go-to authors when I need to unwind after work.

His words make me smile and it actually stomps out my stress.

  • What about you?
  • Does humor help you during dark times?
  • How does this post resonate with you?
  • Let’s celebrate humor as much as we can!
