Turn a Negative Situation Around to Reduce Conflict

Coaching clients share their frustration with not being able to turn negative situations around more and more these days. When a conflict occurs, many people believe they can’t say or do anything to fix it.  Plus, if they just lay low, they can escape any repercussions.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Turning a blind eye to things or hoping for a negative situation to resolve on its own will only lead to frustration.

This post covers how to handle an internal negative situation.  Next week you’ll receive strategies on how to resolve an external negative situation.

Here’s An Easy Tip to Resolve a Negative Internal Situation

An internal situation could be a co-worker who is continually negative and dragging the team down. Or it could be an employee who’s lazy. Unfortunately, most people think dealing with such internal situations is the manager’s job only. But in fact, anyone can take steps to address such issues.

Simply saying something like, “I don’t want to create stress between us. I do want to discuss why our department needs to work together. Especially because we don’t have the manpower as we did two years ago.”

This statement helps diffuse someone’s negativity. Granted, you can’t expect to step in and be the super-hero who saves the company from negative people. You can have the courage to step up and state the facts in a Direct with Respect® way.

Some people are so used to negative people or a destructive culture that they just stay stuck. It’s a risk that’s worth taking.  If you don’t – and you chicken out now– you’ll pay the price later.

Speaking Up is Risky Business!

risky

It’s always risky to voice a different opinion during conversations.

I used to hold on to my thoughts because I didn’t want to rock the boat.

And I finally figured this out. It’s great being a contrarian. People notice, especially when I’m the only one with a different slant.

Others who know me only see how I am now. I was not always known as the Queen of Conflict Resolution!

It’s all about being true to yourself and showing your authenticity!

This isn’t always easy. Remember, it’s risky to take a stand for many people. Especially when others are set in their ways. And have no room for opposite beliefs.

Let’s fast forward many years later. I now coach others to feel comfortable using their voices. Even with bullies and tough conversations. Speaking up is also freeing – you feel more confident about yourself. And, it’s rewarding to see the transformation in clients.  If I can do this, believe me, anyone can.

It’s now your turn to enter this conversation 🙂

How did you change from not using your voice to standing up with a contrarian point of view?

I encourage you to send me a private email if you have a question on how to stand up for something that’s important to you. You are my loyal readers, and I’m always here for you. 🙂

Inspirational Messages from College Keynote Speakers: Even in These Chaotic Times

Do you like to hear inspirational messages from keynote speakers at college graduations? I spent last weekend at both of my grandsons’ graduations at The University of Michigan.

Maria Shriver, an American Journalist, and Martha E Pollack, President of Cornell University, were the 2 keynote speakers. Their inspirational messages spoke to me. I’m sharing them with you because the timely themes are for all of us and our families.

Maria Shriver’s Inspirational Messages: This Uncertain Moment is Your Gift

  • What you need is already in you.
  • It’s not in a job waiting for someone to help you.
  • It’s inside you.

If you feel afraid of freaking out, that means you are aware. It’s a gift – You are a multifaceted alive human being. Fear kept me safe. I didn’t feel brave.

What Bravery means to Maria Shriver inspirational messages

  • Being a journalist and standing up to bullies here and abroad
  • Believing you are ok even when your heart is broken
  • Dropping the  judgment on others
  • Asking for help
  • The cure is in you. Bravery is inside you.

More of Maria Shriver’s Inspirational Messages on the Future

  • Every decision you make will not be the best.
  • You will criticize yourself and wonder why you didn’t do it correctly.
  • It will scare you and others.
  • Your fire and wildness will help you hold you down.
  • Live your values and speak your truth.
  • Live outside the lines that society made for you.
  • Most people settle. They want comfort and safety. Additionally, they are too scared to face the unknown.

Michigan grads, you are not most people. We need your work ethic, drive, and energy. We need you to cure all kinds of diseases. My speech is for all of you who are afraid and will take action anyway.

Lean into the uncertainty and chaos of this moment. Don’t let it hold you back. You may find yourself feeling alone. Don’t let that stop you.

There were wonderful moments and grief. When you find yourself in the darkness, you are strong enough to find the light. Grads, you get it. Walk forward, and the world is ready for your bravery. Light this place on fire

Inspirational Messages from Martha E Pollack, President of Cornell University inspirational messages

  • You are the brightest minds of the 21st century
  • You are problem solvers
  • Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good
  • Read and do what makes you happy
  • Take a deep breath and say, “We did it”
  • Celebrate all your hard work

One of my Favorite Inspirational Quotes to Deal with Stress

I use many of Martin Luther King Jr’s inspirational quotes in my social networking. This inspirational quote is very important to me.

There are days that we feel we can fly. Of course, on other days, crawling seems to be our only option.

Moving forward is a coaching strategy that I use with clients so that they stop being so hard on themselves. Especially when things don’t go as planned.

We need to give ourselves a break at times and realize that we are human. It’s tough to do for the high achievers!

That’s why it’s important to have those coaches in our life (either our friends or professional coaches) to remind us that we have 2 options:

  1.  Holding on to our stress
  2. Moving forward with a plan to let stress go

Believe me when I say that I have to do this periodically. Especially when the technology is challenging during one of my course launches or on a zoom call when the connections are challenging. Moving forward with a second right answer sure helps.

How do these words speak to you?
What do you tell yourself on those tough days, so you don’t beat yourself up?inspirational quotes
