You Have to Read This Book on New Ideas to Motivate Others

cartoon oops fb out of timeIf you want to reduce conflict in the workplace and fully engage yourself or your team then read on! Daniel Pink is the author of DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.

The next few blog posts will describe important aspects of autonomy that you can adapt for yourself or your team. Some of the information is not new YET Daniel Pink shares interesting strategies to explore what motivates you and others.

Autonomy is always an issue that my clients want me to cover in their training. They always ask me, how can I motivate my team or fire up the troops? 

 This post and the ones that follow will help start your own journey on this topic.

 Daniel Pink tells us that Motivation 1 is about survival only.

Motivation 2 is about a drive to seek reward and avoid punishment such as bonuses or incentive plans.

I will describe Daniel Pink’s ideas about Motivation 3 in the next blog post.  I will give you a hint…it is all about autonomy.

 Motivation 2 sounds like…”If you do this…you will get this.” For example, “If you improve productivity we will give you a bonus.”  People expect these kinds of rewards all the time and it  takes away their autonomy.  People don’t have control of their lives with this kind of motivation.  They eventually do the task for the reward.

The carrots and sticks approach creates the following behavior:

  • Diminishes performance
  • Crushes creativity
  • Fosters short term thinking

At times the carrots and sticks approach will work.  For example, promise an office party if the team does some mundane task on a weekend. “If you come to the office on the weekend to stuff envelopes, we will have a gourmet dinner delivered to our office this week.”  There is no hidden agenda in this statement.  The team knows that for this one mundane project, they will get rewarded.

Carrots and Sticks (Motivation 2) works when:

  • You offer a rational for why the task is necessary
  • Acknowledge that the task is boring
  • Allow people to complete the task their own way

Please share the good or bad news on how you use this kind of approach.
What has worked and what has back fired when you use the “if you do this…you will get this” approach?

Look for strategies on the new way of motivating others in the next few blogs. I will share case scenarios that I have seen with my own clients on how they have turned non engaged teams into self motivated employees.

What is the Most Important Part of a Strong Team?

The answer is … TRUST.
Trust is an Important Part of Building Strong Teams

Have you heard your team complain about the lack of trust?
If a horse can trust a goat on its back, surely your team can trust each other to help with the workload!
Building trust on teams is continuous work.

Use the following guidelines to build trust on your team:

  •  Attract and keep a team made up of the most outstanding people in the industry.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
  • Listen to the people who do the work.
  • Build and maintain a spirit of “all for one and one for all.”
  • Encourage every team member to take risks and never be afraid to make mistakes.

So, Do You Think You Have a Strong Team?

Skip the morning donuts and see your team get stronger!

Many people “think” that they have a strong team, yet reality does not always match this perception!
There are usually hidden agendas and conflict in the workplace.
Employees and leaders need to have an open forum to make sure that the team is as strong as possible.

You probably know that my role in all of this is to stir up conflict.
That’s right, I’m not kidding.
I find that some people don’t have these important communication skills.
I help people have tough conversations and give them the tools to improve conflict in the workplace.
There are many reasons why people don’t like to be open.

Do you see constant improvement as part of your team culture?

Here are more ideas how to make your team even stronger:

  • Leaders and people at all levels have opportunity to show what they can do.
  • Most work is done by small teams of peers, led by people who are knowledgeable about specific areas.
  • People are continually challenged – as well as supported – in ways that enable them to meet those challenges.
  • Managers coach instead of dictate.
  • Status is replaced by ability and valuable involvement.
  • Rewards are based on actual contribution.

Her team is doing a GREAT job.
My task was to encourage them to get to their next level of continuous improvement.

Doing Your Personal BEST
These are some of the comments that the audience answered when I asked them, “How do you do your personal best?”

  • “I ask for more things to do.”
  • “The more I know, the more I can contribute.”
  • “I do what I can to make my boss look good.”

I shared the platform with Olympic Gold Medalist, Mary Lou Retton.
She told me how she feels about doing your personal best.

“Champions don’t wait 4 years to make their heroic opportunity.  They create their opportunity every day.
Champions practice because they treat workouts as the Olympics.
Anyone could win in the Olympics, but could does not count.”

Adding Value

  • Make sure that you contribute more than you cost.
  • Make a difference.
  • Add enough value so that something very important would be missing if you left!

Use this post for a team meeting

Share this post with your team and ask them the same question.  This is a great team exercise which I use during my training.
People who are modest are asked to go deep and share because we all need to know our strengths.
People who like boasting about themselves are asked to be very honest and share their talents.
The team will let them know if they are just bragging.
Be careful with this one because at times conflict can come out of these transparent exercises.

Do You Want to Feel Empowered to Reduce Conflict in the Workplace?

Do these questions sound familiar?

How can I encourage people to make decisions when management is absent?
How can I encourage calculated risks so our company stays current?
How can we act as a team, instead of individuals striving for separate goals?

The answer is in one word…EMPOWERMENT. Empowerment gives confidence, strength, and trust in your own authority. Successful businesses especially know the impact of an empowered team.

Learn the 5 P’s of empowerment to support motivated people who’ll bring long-lasting results:

1. Permission…to make decisions and take risks.

Help people see how they’re setting up roadblocks to their success. You may hear people saying “I’m not ready yet”, or “I don’t know enough”. If I waited until I was ready to make that perfect keynote speech, I’d still be waiting!
Encourage calculated risks! These positive statements should become standard in your workplace:

“Everyone fears new things when they are on unfamiliar territory.”
“The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.”
“There are three kinds of people – those that make things happen, those that watch things happen, and those who wondered what happened!”

2. Protection…even if they make a mistake.

Make sure the penalty for failure is not greater than the penalty for doing nothing. Part of growth is learning from our mistakes.
Make sure you stand by your coworkers, even when they fail. If they make a mistake, ask this very important question, “What did you learn, and how would you handle it differently if this situation came up again?”

3. Purpose: Know the company’s goals and answers to the typical conflicts that arise.

Challenge your coworkers by asking why and why not. This forces constant improvement.
Recognize market changes. Encourage problem solving and brainstorming. Technology is expanding at an amazing rate, making some present techniques obsolete. Look at trends and then be ready

4. Proficiency: Know the difference between complacency and excellence.

Encourage people to think of themselves as the owners of their own careers. Help them learn features and benefits of every product and service in the company.
Train people to listen to the client’s needs. Role play with common objections, so staff is prepared when they’re rejected. This way, everyone will be more prepared.

5. Pay-off: Appreciate and recognize superior work.

All people have a basic need for appreciation ­ don’t be afraid to speak up. Let your coworkers know the success of the business is partly due to their efforts and achievements.

When you use the 5 P’s of empowerment you’ll see an increase in morale, productivity, and success. These are my tried and true methods – experiment with your own, then sit back and enjoy the fabulous results!
