Stress: Go From Fear to In Gear

“Computers crash, people die, relationships fall apart.  The best we can do is breathe and reboot.”
Carrie Bradshaw – Sex in the City

The title of this post is from one of my chapters in Take the Ride of Your Life.  This post is about inner conflict that we experience at times in our life.

Joyce, What do You Tell People Experiencing Stress?
People share their challenges about work and my typical response is … “What are you going to do about it?”  I am not being sarcastic or mean.  I’m asking an important question.  They usually look at me after I ask the question.  We then discuss either changing their thinking or keeping the status quo.  When you don’t love what you do anymore figure out what to do differently or shift your thinking.

I interview people before my Dealing with Conflict in the Workplace Programs to identify important issues that may be unique to the group.

Some of the responses are the following”

  • “I can’t get along with my boss.”
  • “There’s a difficult bully on our team.”
  • “I dread Mondays more and more these days.”
  • “I’m not recognized for my hard work.”
  • “I don’t feel fulfilled anymore.”

I realize that most of us feel like victims at times. The question that we have to ask ourselves is…”What are we going to do about it?”  If you tell me that you don’t want to quit then you can suffer in silence or do something to change.

An 80 year old participant raised her hand during one of my programs and said, “I’ve learned that even when I’m in pain I don’t have to be one.”  The group gave her a standing ovation!

Difficult People Share The Following Behaviors

Hi, This is Joyce Weiss, Communication Strategist and Coach and welcome to Communicate with Impact.

Due to such a great response from my viewers and readers, I created another video on how to deal with a very complicated difficult person…The Narcissist.  I suggest that you look at previous videos on my blog if you are new to Communicate with Impact.  You can start this fascinating journey with us.  Yes, I said, “fascinating!”  Many of my clients have discovered that they work or live with this difficult kind of person after watching my video series.  They are intrigued that they CAN gain control and live or work with less stress.

Enjoy the video below and make sure and comment in the comment section.

Do The Difficult People in Your Life Show the Following Behaviors?

  • Act like everything is all about them
  • Make and break rules to fit their needs
  • Put you down
  • Demand whatever they want
  • Things have to be done their way
  • Believe they are superior to you and others
  • Crave constant praise and recognition
  • Are not empathetic to your needs
  • Can’t offer a genuine apology

Possible Results From the List Above

If you checked 6 out of 9 of the behaviors the difficult person may be a strong narcissist.  This is the toughest kind to deal with and you may not know how to deal with him or her.

Narcissists Need to Achieve the Perfect Image

  • Recognition
  • Status
  • Being envied
  • Total self-absorption

Remember

There is definitely a pattern that most narcissists share.  The difficult person in your life may not be as strong as the ones who I cover in this series.

Why Are Bullies Allowed to Get Away with Violence?

Welcome to Communicate with Impact!  Today’s video will answer a question that I get asked quite often…Why are bullies allowed to get away with their violent behavior?  conflict cat with eye patch

Why Bullying Happens
1. Bullies are not punished and thrive
2. Laws to stop it are either absent or too weak to be useful
3. No one in the company has the will to stop it

How to Regain Control
1.  You are not to blame
2.  You must not feel it is acceptable
3.  You have a right to get it stopped
4.  You have a right to confidentiality

Are YOU A Target for A Bully?

mean little boyI’m creating a new workshop on 2 difficult people who are creating a lot of stress for my clients.  Think for a moment who these may be.  If you guessed Bullies and Narcissists you’re correct.  The next few blogs will contain new information about these 2 personality disorders with “possible” strategies on how to deal with them.  I said possible because at times there are NO solutions if the bully or narcissist is high on the personality disorder charts.

I started thinking about my own life and if I was ever a target.  I was surprised when I realized that I was a target not too long ago.  I didn’t even realize this until I started doing research for my clients.  Stay tuned because I will share my story to start you thinking IF you have also been a target.

Facts About Bullies

Bullies don’t have to throw a single punch to do lasting damage to another person’s health…or your business’s fiscal health.

  • Bullying is experienced by more than 1/3 of the US workforce
  • Bullying is 4 times more prevalent than illegal harassment

The majority (68%) of bullying is same gender harassment

What is it? Bullying is VIOLENCE

  • Verbal abuse, intimidation, humiliation
  • Sabotage over a significant amount of time
  • Could be bosses, coworkers, friends, relatives, or clients
  • Mistreatment is severe enough to compromise a worker’s health
  • Interpersonal destruction

It’s All about the Bully’s personal agenda

Kinds of Bullies

  • The screaming or verbal bully: screams or throws things:
words hurt & they humiliate the target
  • The constant critic: Bullies say how incompetent the target is which can cause career destruction
  • The 2 headed snake: destroys by spreading rumors with work teams
  • The gatekeeper: controls by withholding resources necessary for targets to succeed
  • The sadistic or narcissistic bully: lacks empathy towards others
  • The physical bully: action oriented
  • The serial bully: bully seems charming while the target is looked upon as a whiny victim
  • Gang bullies: enjoy being part of the gang

     AM I Being Bullied?

  • You are miserable
  • Your work is sabotaged
  • You’re caught off guard and think about the ramifications later on
  • Lack of scars make others think you (the target) is exaggerating

    Why me?

  • The best and brightest are targeted
  • You pose a threat somehow to someone who is not developed as a moral human being

    Who Gets targeted?

  • Unlike schoolyard bullying, you were not targeted because you were a “loner” without friends to stand up to the bullying gang
  • You’re not a weakling
  • You were targeted because you posed a threat to him or her
  • This is in the mind of the bully
  • Targets are more technically skilled than the bully
  • Targets are better liked and have better social skills
  • Targets have a sense of integrity

Stay tuned for the next blog which will explore why employers make Bullying worse and what the best and brightest companies are doing to put a stop to this epidemic.
