Career Development Strategies for Leaders Video

Are you a leader who wants to open up the lines of communication with your team?
If so you are in the right place!  Part of career development as a leader is to continually work on communication strategies. Part of career development as a leader is to continually work on communication strategies. First watch the short video below.  The leadership strategies follow the video.

Recap of the Video

I was traveling to Canada from Michigan with my friends.  My neighbor Mike was driving and the border guard asked him where he lived.  Mike said, “The United States.”  The guard asked in a very sarcastic way, “That’s a big place…where do you live?”  Mike said, “Michigan.”  Again the guard asked in a very condescending way, “That’s also a big place.”  This time, Mike answered, “West Bloomfield MI.” The guard let us through without asking any more questions.  We laughed the entire weekend about this communication faux pax.

The guard was correct in asking these important questions.  He didn’t have to be such a bully.

The same thing happens in our conversations.  We may express the best message and ask the greatest questions.  It’s how we say things that matter.

Hope you enjoy this short article on Career Development Strategies for Leaders.

Career Development Strategy #1

Tell your team that you are proud of them.  Many of my clients don’t realize how powerful their words can be with their team.  Make sure that you share how your team’s skills add to the success of the company.  This one strategy will go a LONG way especially when you are authentic and share details on their strengths.  Part of a strong leader is recognizing the strengths of others and helping them continually grow.

Career Development Strategy #2

Ask for their opinions.  Many of my clients tell me that when they start asking direct reports to share ideas on a new process, the lines of communication opens up.  Of course, you need to be willing to really listen and take their opinions seriously.

Career Development Strategy #3

Ask your team what they like and dislike about their jobs.  Turnover will be reduced when you keep your star employees from leaving.  Many times they have legitimate complaints.  They find new positions in another company because they are listened to by their new boss.  If you can’t deliver their requests, let them know why and make them feel listened to by asking them what you need to do keep them from leaving.  A client of mine recently saved a star employee from leaving by asking him what he needed that he was not getting from his current job.  The employee told his boss that he has been bored and feels his career development has been squelched.  The boss took him very seriously and enrolled the employee in an online course on leadership.  All is well!

Career Development Strategy #4

Ask what you need to do to make their work easier and what the company needs to do to create new processes.  This is an extension of strategy #3.  Leaders who accept total responsibility for the morale of their team have a better success rate.  A client of mine enjoyed her employment except when her ideas were discounted during meetings.  I helped her with a strategy to express this concern to her boss.  Miracles happened.  He heard her frustration and did not realize that he discounted her.  The responsibility is on the employee who allowed her boss to continually reject her ideas for many years.  She was on her way to look for a new position until she practiced what she would say to her boss.  She is getting stronger and is being listened to!  Remember, “You Get What YOU Tolerate!”

Keys to Develop The Next Generation in the Work Place

The Millennial generation in the work place can be a struggle or asset.
Are you a leader who wants to understand the millennial generation in the work place?
Do you want to keep your star millennials from jumping ship?
Great!  This article will provide you with 4 simple techniques to attract, develop and keep the next generation motivated.

Millennials matter because they are entering the workforce in larger numbers than any of their previous generations in the workplace!

Complaints From Leaders Who Work with the Millennial generation in the Work Place

Do these sound familiar?

  • They don’t have a good work ethic
  • When they are bored they leave and go to our competitor
  • I don’t know how to talk to them
  • They are always on their devices
  • They don’t know how to have a face to face conversation

I hear comments like this all the time from my clients who are frustrated with this next generation.  I challenge leaders to stop complaining or judging and start getting to know these bright young employees. Communication is improved once the bridges are removed…from both sides!

Key #1 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place:   Equality and Diversity

The next generation in the workplace seeks out employers with a strong record on equality and diversity.  Employers need to do more than “talk the talk”.  They must foster inclusive talent and advancement strategies.

Key #2 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place: Work-Life Balance

The next generation expects to have time in their life.  They want to live their life to the fullest.  Organizations need to recognize that work-life balance and flexibility is a talent-wide proposition.

Key #3 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place:  A Feedback Culture

Millennials welcome and expect regular feedback.  Yes, they are connected to the digital world!  Their preference is for critical feedback discussions to take place face to face.  Companies of choice understand this important need and train leaders to communicate directly and to have productive career development feedback sessions often.

Key#4 to Develop the Millennial Generation in the Work Place: Reputation is Very Important

Millennials want their work to have a purpose, to contribute something to the world and to be proud of their employer.  Companies need to develop community outreach programs more so than ever before to attract this vital generation

Joyce’s Thoughts on How to Develop the Next Generation in the Work Place

I will continue to share research on this important topic because my clients struggle with millennials.  The challenge is for all generations to be open and share their needs and expectations.  This is not new.  It is possible to remove generational barriers as long as the dialogue is judgment free.  The results are impressive after my clients put these keys into practice.  They really do work.

I will be including more detail on this topic for the next few articles.

Strategic Communications: The Truth About Delegation

Are you a manager who wants to empower your employees and learn strategic communications?
Are you experiencing more pressure from your boss while attempting to manage your entire department?
Great!  This article will provide you with strategies to use to reduce YOUR stress at work and empower your employees at the same time.

Delegation Challenges

Delegation won’t work if your employees don’t trust you and if they don’t have the right skills.  This is a perfect time for you to coach certain team members who have the potential to help them grow professionally.  It may be a good time to have a realistic conversation about your expectations.  Make sure and share specific details on what will happen if the employee doesn’t improve by a certain time.  The rest of the article will help you encourage your skilled employees to grow which will improve the trust.

Strategic Communications Tip #1:  Delegation has Clear Options

Check out the list below.  Start with the top of the list – when you don’t trust an employee, and work to the bottom of the list – when you have total trust in an employee.  Once people learn responsibility, you can confidently stop micromanaging!

  1. Look into this problem.  Give me all the facts.  I will decide what to do.

      2.  Let me know the available alternatives.

      3.  Recommend a course of action for my approval.

      4.  Let me know what you intend to do.  Do it unless I say not to.

      5.  Take action.  Let me know what you did.  Let me know how it turns out.

      6.  Take action.  Communicate with me only if your action is unsuccessful.

      7.  Take action.  No further communication with me is necessary.

Strategic Communications #2:  Advantages of Delegation

You don’t need to do everything yourself.  When you’re able to delegate well, you’ll experience that delegation helps:

  • Save time
  • Build stronger staff
  • Motivate employees
  • Build mutual trust
  • Improve quality of work
  • Help overworked managers

Strategic Communications From Joyce

If you are a manager who recognizes that you are not doing the greatest job in the delegation area, believe me, you are NOT alone!  My executive coaching practice has shown me that many great leaders never learned how to coach others and develop their team.  This is a skill that must be taught and experienced.  Cicero wrote, “Where there is life, there is hope!”  🙂

Strategic Communications: Disarm Tough Conversations

Have you been involved in difficult conversations when you wished you had strategic communications skills in your tool box?

Do you want to stop making others feel defensive while giving them constructive feedback?

If so, Great!  This article will give you 5 strategies to use the next time you are in these complex situations. We’ve all dealt with people who become defensive.  How you react can influence your future relationship with this person.

Strategic Communications #1- Understand Your Role

  1. When someone responds defensively to you, ask yourself,“What did I just do to cause that defensive reaction?”
  1. Whenever someone says or does something that causes you to become defensive, ask yourself, “What did that person do to cause that reaction from me?”

Strategic Communications #2 – Use Constructive Feedback Wisely

Constructive feedback is a gift that you give to people you truly care about.  This statement is hard for some people to grasp.  Think about a time when someone gave you feedback in a constructive way.  What did you learn from this experience?  Use that knowledge to help your coworkers.

Strategic Communications # 3 – Disarm Toxic Comments

The next time you’re confronted with a toxic comment, be prepared!  Pretend you’re in their situation. Figure out why they are behaving this way.  This helps us respond, not react.  Ask yourself, “How would I feel if I were in their shoes?”  We can’t put our head on their shoulders.

Strategic Communications #4 – Know How to React

If the toxic comment were delivered as constructive criticism, would there be any truth to it?  If so, how will you react?

  • Don’t explain or defend yourself when something goes wrong.
  • Acknowledge, apologize and act – versus explain.  Explanations come across as excuses.
  • Agree if what they say is somewhat true.
  • Don’t blame it on someone else, even when you know who made the mistake.

Strategic Communications # 5 – Know What NOT to Do

When people give feedback, they do it to influence future behavior – not to change the past.  Though it may be difficult to hear, try to listen and:

  1. Don’t defend yourself
  2. Don’t deny responsibility
  3. Don’t counter attack
  4. Don’t withdraw

I want to hear from you!

How do you react when someone pushes you?  What have your learned about yourself when you have pushed others?  Understanding these reactions will improve your communication skills and take you to the next level in your career development.
