Computer/Internet Addiction Causes and Effects

Computer Addiction – A Worrying New Problem
As we all know, computers and the internet have transformed the way in which we live and work. In many cases, this transformation has been for the better. It is a rare business indeed which could conduct itself without the aid of computers nowadays! However, the internet can also be a source of problems within the workplace. Browsing the internet during ‘downtime’ or even during work time can become problematic, productivity-wise, and measures like restricting the use of certain websites are likely to cause conflict between managers and workforce.

More desirable is if employees choose of their own accord to use the internet responsibly – but this is becoming harder and harder as our culture becomes more and more saturated with cyberspace. A growing problem is that of ‘computer addiction’, which can cause as many workplace troubles as any other addiction – if not more so.
‘Computer addiction’ or ‘internet addiction’, while known about for years, has only recently made it into the definitive list of mental disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders.

However, what the manual has to say about it is worrying. According to leading experts in the field, as many as one in every four children may have an internet addiction. This manifests in the same manner as any other addiction – with compulsive seeking out of the internet, a sickly euphoria when on a computer, and even withdrawal when internet access is restricted. In a workplace, it can result in antisocial behavior, in a loss of productivity, in lack of motivation, and in problematic behavior regarding workplace computers. If you suspect that internet addiction may be a problem in your workplace, then you need to act immediately.

Complaints Reveal A Lot About A Person

mean little boyThere are times when most of us feel empathy for others who make legitimate complaints about health, relationships, work etc.  BUT there are other times when the complaints are so outrageous that we want to walk away or yell at the other person.  I was at a restaurant the other day and heard the following conversations:

“My house is so dusty and I can’t wait for the crew to leave!” You may be thinking so, Joyce what’s the big deal? The complainer is so lucky to have the resources to have her house remodeled. Dirt and dust are part of the reality when we are able to have home improvement. It is what it is.

This person’s friend didn’t miss a beat and in a VERY whiny voice said, “I’m not looking forward to going home because I have to pack for our 3 week cruise.” Again, you may be more tolerant to complainers than I am. This traveler is fortunate to go on such a luxurious vacation and packing is part of the equation when one travels. It is what it is! These 2 friends are perfect for each other.

So, Joyce, What are you telling us?

Complaints reveal a lot about the person who is speaking. We all know spoiled adults who sound like 2 year old children who are inconvenienced. They don’t do well when either large or small changes happen in their life. It can be a huge stress if we are unfortunate enough to work or live with people like this. Of course we all can turn into complainers at times…we are all human. I’m talking about the chronic complainer.

An Internal Fight Inside All of Us

conflict woman's fist on tableMany of my articles are about resolving conflict in the workplace.  This post is about our internal conflict.  We can’t separate work and home at times.  I do hope that this post will help you let go of some issues that may be bogging you down.  We ALL spend way too much time in our personal and professional lives with this internal stress.

I client shared an Old Cherokee Legend with me recently.  It is so powerful and decided to add to to my conflict in the workplace trainings.

Go From FEAR to In GEAR

Joe Brown, from Blue Cross Blue Shield of MI brought me in to speak and do a book signing during National Management Association week in Detroit.  Thanks to Joe Brown and Adrienne Coleman who made me feel like part of their Blue Cross Blue Shield family.  I read from the chapter STRESS:  “I’m afraid to take off the training wheels” – Go From Fear to In Gear. 

This post consists of a powerful story from my book, Take the Ride of Your Life!  I hope that you enjoy the message as much as Joe and Adrienne’s team did.  They asked very powerful and insightful questions during the discussion.

Alyce’s Story

Alyce is a crisis counselor for abused women. She understands the power of asking for and giving help. She spent her earliest childhood in a Louisiana migrant camp. She remembers watching her mom pick tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, apples, peaches, and cherries under broiling southern skies.

“My first bike did not even have wheels. It was a real old Schwinn. Everybody took turns pushing each other on it, because it didn’t pedal,” she recalled.
“It had a big seat on it, and we pretty much taught ourselves to ‘ride’ it. All the kids took turns holding the bike and pushed each other until we skinned our knees. We had a ball.”
It wasn’t until Alyce turned eleven or twelve and moved to Michigan that she got her first new bicycle.

When Alyce thinks about her bikes she has some keen insights. 
“That first bike wasn’t complete. Yet, a bunch of kids got together and supported each other so we could all play. Then all of a sudden, I had a bike that I could ride myself. It’s like my life. I love doing things with people, for people. I’m much more content with this than being by myself. I’m happy with my life. Now I have a full bike with everything
on it — and I’m sharing it.”

Joyce’s Thoughts
Many of us don’t ask for help because we think it is a sign of weakness. Asking for help is a strength. It is a sign that you are taking care of your own needs.
Sit down and create a list of people who can help you feel less pressured. Problem-solving gives you control of the situation; it allows you to create your own positive
environment amid the stress of everyday chaos. Problem-solving is another technique that moves people into action. It gives control, versus staying stuck and complaining about
the same old things.

Gear-Shifting Action Steps
1. Write the name of a negative person who brings you down. Problem-solve a plan to protect yourself.

2. Who is a cheerleader in your life? What does this person do to encourage you?

3.  Who are you a cheerleader for? How do you encourage this person to be the best he or she can be?

4. On the left side of a paper, make a list of the situations that troubled you last year. On the right side, list the effects of each situation. Hopefully the items on the
right side won’t seem so important.

What worried me one year ago?
What are the consequences?
At work?
At home?
With relationships?

Now make a list of the troubles you’re facing today.
Visualize how they will turn out one year from now.
What worries me today?
What will be the consequences?
At work?
At home?
With relationships?

Cruel Words Take Root in Us-Learn to Focus on Positives Instead

either in a positive or negative way. It is amazing how many details many of
us remember-both the good and bad.
We all have our own stories and the content of this post is taken from my book,

Tom’s Story

Tom’s dad drilled the classic “you’re a loser” mentality into his head at an early age.
But that doesn’t mean Tom became a loser.

Tom, a successful salesperson, was told at an early age not to believe
in himself. “You are a loser. You will never amount to anything.
You will never learn to ride your bike, either,” his father said.
Those cruel words pounded into Tom’s subconscious and took root.

Despite the expectation of failure and the utter lack of love and support,
Tom was determined to learn.
As an adult, he became obsessed with success at work.
“I cannot fail!” he would tell himself.

This became the entire focus of his life, affecting his family and even his health.
Rather than relishing his success, he was afraid of “falling off the bike” of his youth.
He did not realize he was a winner from the first time he “pedaled” with determination
to succeed on his own.

Hope for Tom!

Eventually, Tom was able to see all the positives in his life and discovered
that he trusted himself all along.
He realized he was not only strong and determined — he was a success!
