4 Reasons Why Practicing Self-Care is Important | Part 4

Do you know why self-care is important in your life?

Are you ready to stomp out your stress NOW?

This is the 4th article in the series “Self-Care is Important.”

You’ll find the links to the rest of the series at the end of the article.

This week you’ll discover easy ways to start treating yourself better. You heard me right! Most people don’t make time for themselves. And yes, it’s very dangerous for your physical and mental health if you don’t.

Full disclosure here! I’m guilty as charged. And finally learned how easy it is – once we make a few changes in our routine.

What’s the Deal About Why Self-Care is Important

Putting “me time” on the back burner is a big part of why we feel run-down and overwhelmed. Additionally, self-care helps us sharpen our mental and physical health. It keeps us healthy and happy.

When we take care of ourselves, we are better at staying focused with those special people in our lives.

I recommend that we take time every day to do something for ourselves.  You’ll find out how I do this further in this article.

Essential Oils Help Us Perk Up or Relax self-care is important

Why in the world am I talking about essential oils? Humans have used aromatherapy for centuries.

Rosemary can help some people boost their memory. Plus it relaxes me when I mix rosemary and lavender in a diffuser.

Eucalyptus and peppermint are my best friends when I need to write blogs or my social networking posts. I feel perkier and sharper when these essential oils are sending their aroma throughout my office.

We need to be careful because some people don’t like aromas. Especially if they are allergic.

Mindfulness is HOT and is Part of Why Self-Care is Important

It’s all about focusing on the present – without judging how we feel and think. This can be liberating.

There are many apps that are free for you to try. I recently purchased the “inner balance” program. This app has helped me calm my busy mind right before bed. It really works. It took me a long time to finally get on the mindfulness train. Hopefully, you already know of its power.

Music and the Importance of Self-Care

There are some people who don’t find music appealing. And they only want silence. That’s just fine.

Others can’t exist without music playing at home or work.

Music has always been part of my life. Rock and Roll is playing during the day while I walk or cook. Enya or spa music helps me unwind before I start counting sheep. 🙂

Start experimenting by listening to different artists. Find out from younger people who the top artists are and you may be surprised at how much their voice affects you.

Joyce, Tell Us Why Self-Care is Important to You self-care is important

I’m glad you asked. 🙂

I plan my day by putting only the important tasks on my calendar. First, I created a list of goals and what tasks need to be finished in order to reach these goals.

The great news is every day when I complete the tasks, I celebrate by rewarding myself.

It used to be food. I stopped that once the weight started climbing.

Now there’s a celebration list that I created. Organizing my basement and decluttering my home is on my list.

Everyone has different ideas to put on their calendar.

Walking or bike riding isn’t on the list because exercise and movement are part of my daily routine.

Laughter is on the list. I call a friend who I know makes me smile. This is on my celebration list when I’m ready for self-care or after I complete all the daily tasks on my calendar.

Self-Care Practices to Reduce Your Stress | 3

Are you ready for more ideas on how to use self-care practices to reduce your stress?

This is the third article in the series: Self-Care: Take Care of Yourself

This week you’ll discover:

  • Examples of self-care
  • A list of self-care practices to reduce your inner stress
  • Links for articles 1 and 2 are at the end of the article

Examples of Self-Care Practices to Reduce Your Stressself-care practices to reduce your stress |career path | reclaim your life

Everyone has his or her definition of self-care. Some ideas cost money and at times you’ll find activities that are free and bring you more sustained joy.

Consider a manicure or massage or any other pampering activity. It might seem indulgent for some of you. Yet, if the activity helps you de-stress and carve time for yourself, it counts!

Taking a walk or riding your bike doesn’t cost you money. Walking counts if it brings you satisfaction. If not, find another activity that suits you better.

The idea is to find self-care practices to reduce your stress that provides just enough calm to help you get through the day and wake up in a better mood tomorrow.

  • Finding Purpose: Having a strong life purpose is associated with decreased mortality rates.
  • Diet: Finding a good nutritionist helps you discover what kind of diet is best for your needs and health.
  • Sleep: Too-little sleep (less than seven hours per night) is linked with higher mortality rates.
  • Getting Outside: Spending time outdoors is associated with a lower mortality rate.

Self-Care: Take Care of Yourself During Stress (2)

Are you ready for more self-care suggestions?

This is part 2 in the series: Self-Care – Take Care of Yourself During Stress

This week’s blog is about:

  • What companies do to recognize self-care
  • Benefits of self-care
  • How self-care changes during our life

Here’s the link from Part 1 in the series.

What Companies do to Recognize Self-Care

A few weeks ago I shared a powerful interview with HR and Lead Associate, Brennan O’Leary. The short video below describes how his organization takes care of its people.

You will find the link to the entire interview at the end of the article.

Benefits of Self-Care

Self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself. Including physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Its benefits are better physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Research suggests self-care promotes positive health results, such as building resilience, living longer, and managing stress.

It’s all about taking care of and meeting our needs. It’s that simple, yet not simple to do.

Start thinking of your own needs right now. And ask yourself what is one small change you can make to take care of your needs better?

Self-care Has Different Meanings for Everyone

People will adopt different self-care practices. Additionally, our own self-care needs may change periodically. self-care

At times I need time to read a book just to take a break. Additionally, a walk in the winter is what I need to feel refreshed and energized.

We react better to our challenges and stresses. Self-care helps us stay positive during challenging times.

Self-Care: Take Care of Yourself During Stress

This week’s theme is Self-Care. I listen to my favorite podcasts such as Brene Brown’s “Unlocking Us” or Whitney Johnson’s “Disrupt Yourself”. It’s obvious that self-care is a hot topic.  Google Trends shows that searches for self-care have doubled sinceself-care 2015.

Taking care of yourself is not being selfish. I find that many of my clients feel guilty when others “try” to put them down for setting boundaries. It’s all about protecting yourself. All of us have different ways to do this.

Self-care means taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy. Plus you can do your job and be there for others.

This article is the first in the series: Self-Care Rocks! Clients shared the scenarios below on how others judged them just for taking care of their needs.

Self-Care Scenario #1

Jim was invited to a party during the height of the pandemic. His friends didn’t know that Jim had an auto-immune disease. He chose not to tell others since he was at the beginning of working with his doctor. Jim told his friends that he was not going to the party because there were going to be over 100 people attending the event. His friends called Jim “nervous nelly.” And, they told him to lighten up.

The reality is that Jim felt guilty. He wanted to go yet decided self-care was more important to him. We discussed this situation during a coaching session. It didn’t take Jim long to figure out that his friends could say what they want. Additionally, Jim felt totally in control and put his shoulders back and spoke confidently when his friends attempted to tease him.

Self-Care Scenario #2

Sue was upset during a coaching session when she expressed a tense situation with her cousin Kim. Sue is very close to Kim. They used to see each other for weekly dinners. It dawned on Sue that she still loved Kim, yet she was tired of Kim’s negativity. Kim’s drama was getting out of control.  We discussed how Sue can still be close to Kim. Additionally, she decided to meet with Kim only once per month and not weekly. Self-care is something that Sue ignored for her entire life. Sue felt like a huge weight was lifted after our session.

Sue had an open conversation with Kim on how close she felt to her cousin. Kim appreciated Sue’s openness. And, she thanked Sue for letting her know. Kim didn’t realize how she was turning more negative as a result of poor choices for partners and jobs.

Squid Game is a Hit. Here’s Why It’s So Popular

Have you heard of the Netflix TV series, Squid Game?

If so, I look forward to hearing your opinion about this series. Especially because it examines the conflict among privilege, humanity, and survival.

Here’s a Description of Squid Game

The series revolves around a contest where 456 players in deep financial debt put their lives at risk. And, they play a series of children’s games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize {south Korean won}. The title of the series draws from a similarly named Korean children’s game.

Social and mental health issues, from gambling addiction to the abuse of social privilege and wealth are part of the equation.

It’s like watching Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies yet with more brutality, violence, and dark themes. Yikes!

In Squid Game, the lack of empathy and cruel abuse of power is more difficult to watch than the violence.

Hwang had conceived of the idea based on his own economic struggles early in life as well as the class disparity in South Korea.

Squid Game was released worldwide on September 17, 2021, to critical acclaim and international attention. Attracting more than 142 million member households during its first four weeks from launch, it is Netflix’s most-watched series to date, surpassing 2020’s Bridgerton.

Why I Decided to Watch Squid Game

I was warned by my kids that it’s violent, dark, and twisted. They also shared that it could be a series that I’d like because it’s about the survival of the fittest, teams, and the good and ugly sides of humanity. And, it’s about inner conflict – my kids know me. 🙂

I can’t stop watching it. It pulled me in immediately. At this time I’ve only seen 4 out of 9 episodes.

Lessons Learned from the Popular Show

No one knows what’s going on in other people’s lives. Most of the characters are in debt, gamblers, lie to their families, and struggle to survive.

It’s sad to see. We all know people who suffer from family members who are desperate and make bad decisions. They just can’t get out of their conflict. And, they constantly wait for the BIG horse race to make them rich.

Have You Seen Squid Game?

Please share your opinions if you’ve seen even 1 episode.

If you decide to watch it after your read this blog, please don’t do this right before you go to bed. It’s so shocking and the violence is even worse than Pulp Fiction.

Next week I will share my thoughts after I finish the series.  I’m thrilled to say that there are only 9 episodes. Something keeps me glued to the screen. When I figure this out, I will let you know.
