Strategic Communication Strategies to Insure That Employees Grow

Do you want Strategic Communication Strategies to ensure that individuals grow professionally?

Strategic Communication Strategies #1:  Ask Individuals for Their Input

  1. What would you do first if you became the owner of this business?
  2. What do I need to know about your work that I may not know?
  3. What do you need to know about the business that you don’t already know?
  4. What seems to work well here?
  5. What doesn’t work so well?
  6. What opportunities do you see that we’re really not exploiting?
  7. What problems do you see ahead that we’re not discussing?
  8. What do customers/members say to you about our product or service?

Strategic Communication Strategies #2:  Get Feedback from Colleagues and Leadership about Team Members

Clients have asked me to conduct 360 interviews with individuals who they want to promote or who need professional development.  Below you will find a few key questions which will reveal how others see the team member.  Once I interview from 5-10 key individuals I create a report to share with the coaching client.  I make sure that he or she will not know who responded and always look for patterns.

 1.   What are the strengths of _____?
 2.   What 3 things does_____ need to do to make a promotion?
 3.   What does ____ need to stop, continue and change?

I have many more revealing questions which I share with the coaching client.  If you decide to do this make sure that the person who conducts the interviews is trustworthy.  Feel free to contact me to find out how I can help you interview your employee’s leaders, colleagues, and clients.  I create a report and share this with the employee.  I always spin the information that all the information is helpful.  I discuss how we ALL have blind spots if the client tells me that he or she does not agree or trust the people who I interview.

Strategic Communication to Get Noticed More in the Workplace

Do you know how to use strategic communication with your leadership?
Do you want to learn and use a new strategy to feel heard at work?

Great!  This article will provide 2 simple techniques you can use to speak to leadership.

I recently spoke to leaders at a financial conference.  There were both emerging and experienced leaders in the audience.  We discussed how to deal with bullies in the workplace and how to resolve numerous tough situations.  I will be using more of their ideas in future articles

Strategic Communication #1:  Make The Conversation Safe

Here’s a strategy to use when you want to have a tough conversation with leaders.  If you work for a bully, you will have to rethink your approach!  This scenario came up when an emerging leader was not included in certain social gatherings and meetings.
Start out by filling in the blanks:
I don’t want:
I do want: 
For example:  “I don’t want to be disrespectful.  I do want to understand your reasoning for certain decisions.”

This will start the conversation going by asking to be kept in the loop if that’s possible.

Strategic Communication #2:  Use the Power Formula

Fill in the blanks below
I am:
when:
because:

For example:  “I am frustrated when I don’t feel “heard” because I would like to have a seat at the table and work as a productive team member.”

This strategic communication may get the attention of your leaders that you are actively interested in being part of the team and want to be included in the decision-making process.  You need to be ready for constructive feedback if and when you hear why you are not included.  Your leaders need to be aware of your desire to be part of the big picture thinking for the company.

Put Fear into Gear: A Story from My Book

I have included bike stories in previous blogs from my book, Take the Ride of Your Life. I decided to share Joan’s story because I have been listening to many people lately who have told me their life lessons with me. I hope you enjoy her message.

Joan’s story about learning from unhappy experiences

Joan, an entrepreneur, is another courageous woman who has both fond and painful memories of growing up. On the one hand, she adored the friendly Detroit neighborhood where children ran in and out of each other’s homes, and mothers were always handing out cookies. On the other hand, she was stifled by the atmosphere in her own home, where “children should be seen and not heard” was her parents’ motto.

Over time, Joan learned about herself, and in doing so bolstered her weakened self-esteem. “Once I understood where I was coming from and got to know myself, I realized I was okay,” she said. “Acknowledging my positive attributes — my sense of humor, loyalty, perseverance, honesty, and the ability to have fun — led me to accomplish a lot as a parent and a wife, and with my work. I realized the security of home is very important. To me, a bike represents taking off to somewhere new and unknown.”

A Secret to Gain Control In Tough Conversations

Have you ever responded to a person and wished that you did not hear what came out of your mouth? We can ALL answer a loud, “YES, Joyce!”  I have done the same thing at times.  The good news is that this post describes a secret tool that I share with my clients and it really works.

The video below is # 18 from my video series:  20 Tips to Reduce Conflict in the Workplace. 

 We all hear the words stimulus and response.

  • The stimulus is something that happens to us…
    For example when someone speaks in a sarcastic way.
  • The response is how we react to something.
    In this example it would be how we react to the sarcasm.

 I’d like to add creating a gap to our equation. This is where you decide how to react. I always suggest that we take a breath and pause for a quick moment to decide what you want to say to the person.

 You can react in the following ways when you create a gap:

  • Use sarcasm
  • Ignore them
  • Take revenge
  • Let it go
  • Thank them

The Rake Story

One of my favorite stories is the rake story. You go to a neighbor to ask him to borrow his rake and he says, “No.” Next week he comes to your house and asks to borrow your shovel. You can either:

  • Say “You’ve got to be kidding.”
  • You can give it to him with a sarcastic comment such as, “I’m better than you.”
  • You don’t say anything and give him a mean look.
  • Or you can ask him the reason why he did not give you the rake and give him the shovel without any hesitation.

What is a Good Answer?

I recommend that we ask ourselves, “What is the best way to respond so that we feel good about ourselves?” It does help to let go of things that happened yesterday and to give up revenge. Keeping score takes too much energy.

We usually have more ways to respond. We don’t have to get defensive, be sarcastic, take revenge or suffer in silence. Of course we don’t always respond the best way we can. Take a moment and ask yourself what you learned about your response so that you don’t repeat this pattern. It is better to pull back and not push someone when they attack you with sarcasm.

I hope that these tips will help you take your communication to a new level.
