A Good Night’s Rest Can Reduce Workplace Conflict

Workplace conflict is a topic that I cover almost every week.  Clients share that the lack of sleep gets in their way at work.  In comes my guest author, Kelly N, an expert in healthy sleep.  I hope you enjoy her words of wisdom.  The 5 strategies are tested and will improve your job performance and workplace satisfaction.

If you constantly find your thoughts feeling foggy and you notice yourself yawning at your desk or throughout meetings, it can’t always be an easy blame on Monday or just a long week. It shouldn’t surprise you to hear that a lack of sufficient sleep can negatively affect your overall daily performance, including your success at work. When you’re fatigued, both your body and mind suffer, hindering peak professional performance. A lack of quality sleep is not only harmful to your physical wellbeing but also your mental performance. Creativity, reaction times, focus, motivation, information processing and retention are only a few aspects of professional success that become inherently neglected by a lack of rest.

5 Ways Better Sleep Reduces Workplace Conflict:

  1. Better quality sleep is linked to improved emotions and fewer stressors.
  2. An increased perception of positivity.
  3. Low-stress workplaces have higher rates of employees who don’t encounter sleep discomfort/challenges.
  4. Restfulness plays a key role in self-management and emotional control.
  5. A lack of sleep can make us over-reactive and conflict/negotiation adverse.

It’s no secret that ideal sleep can be a challenge to achieve. Most of the workforce reports feeling tired throughout their regular workdays. This sleepiness hinders productivity for both employees and employers resulting in sub-par work performances on a regular basis. More than 1/4 of professionals are aware that their daytime drowsiness interferes with daily activities multiple days each month. It’s important to remember that even modest amounts of sleep loss will accumulate, so a few nights of inadequate sleep can result in an overall impact on daily functioning.

Workplace Conflict #1:  Sunday Night Insomnia

The night before the long work week often feels like the most restless night of the week. Avoid your acute insomnia by establishing a regular sleep/wake schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up within an hour of the same time each day of the week (weekends included). If you’d like to see if you have developed an unhealthy pattern, consider monitoring with a sleep tracking app.

Workplace Conflict #2:  Discomfort
Your bedtime necessities play a bigger impact on your ability to get effective rest than one might assume. A well-designed and supportive mattress and pillow can alleviate many physical discomforts associated with body pains and aches. Innovative foam layered mattresses are best for spinal alignment and support.

Workplace Conflict #3:  Busy Mind
An anxious or wandering mind can be the one thing leaving you distracted and unable to easily doze away. It is important to establish familiar and consistent nighttime patterns to let your mind slow down and prepare itself for rest. Avoid overstimulating your mind too closely to your bedtime.

Workplace Conflict #4:  Hunger
When hunger strikes after you’re tucked away under your sheets, it is hard to resist temptations. Resisting this temptation can be more of a distraction than its worth. Consider a light, carb-heavy snack. If you face hunger based distractions each night, consider adjusting your dinner time and avoid these foods that steal from your slumbers.

Workplace Conflict #5:  Temperature
Temperature is often framed as a bedtime preference or opinion, like a number of blankets, pillows or nightlights. To progress into deeper sleep cycles your body temperature will naturally decrease. A toasty room or an overactive AC unit will impair your ability to get quality rest. The ideal bedroom temperature sits just around 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Warning:  Use These 6 Tips to Gain Control at Your Own Risk

The Challenge:  How to gain control when the demands on your time seem to never ease up. We’re all struggling to make time for ourselves, maintain friendships, and keep the spark in our love lives. Gain control

How can you determine what you need to be happier and more productive?

The Solution:  Start with these 6 tips to achieve better balance in your life:

Tip One: Gain Control by Searching out a Flexible Employer

Job flexibility is the number one desired corporate benefit. If your company gives new meaning to the word rigid, you may need to look elsewhere – flexible employers do exist!

Pay attention to articles profiling companies that are particularly family-friendly or rated as the best place to work. These companies are a great place to start your job search.

 Tip Two:  Gain Control by Asking and You Shall Receive (Maybe)

If you want a more flexible work arrangement, whether it’s flex time, job sharing, or a shorter workweek, try asking for it – but make sure you’ve done your homework.

For example, if you’re a really productive person, highlight this strength to your manager. Show her you’re worthy of this special consideration. Be prepared to give your boss the details of the new arrangement so he knows you’ve thought it through.

Tip Three: Gain Control by Forming a Work-life Balance Committee Gain control

Form a group to survey coworkers to determine their needs. Gently inform your leaders that creating a flexible environment will be a benefit to the company because their employees will be happier, more creative, and loyal.

Tip Four: Gain Control by Scheduling ‘ME’ Time

If it’s important to you to do a thirty-minute workout three times a week, mark it with permanent marker on your calendar.

There will always be some ‘more important’ work projects that compete for your time, but you need to realize that your personal commitments are just as valuable.  I enjoy looking at my health app at the end of the day to see how many steps I took.

Tip Five: Gain Control by Realizing a Temporary Lack of Balance is Acceptable

Sometimes, you may feel your life is out of balance. Sometimes it’s worth it, like when you go back to school or take the time to care for a child or parent.

If the benefit is bigger than the drawback, then accept it – because you have a new important, temporary priority. In time, you can shift back to a better balance with a new sense of accomplishment.

 Tip Six: Gain Control by Recognizing the Signs of Burnout

When life remains out of balance for an extended period of time, you can suffer from burnout. Are you as tired when you wake up as you were when you went to bed? Do the little pleasures of life fail to satisfy you? Is your productivity waning?

Refresh yourself! It could be something as simple as taking a weekend vacation-or as major as changing careers. The first step is recognizing it, so you can put your life back in balance.  Many of my coaching clients discover that their job is actually killing them from all the stress.  They either have tough conversations with the boss or decide to look for another job.  Burnout is an obvious sign to take seriously.

Determine what your personal and professional needs are and decide if your workplace is meeting them. If it’s not a match, then review the six tips and make the necessary changes. When all the puzzle pieces of life fit together, you will be a better friend, parent, employee, and person.

How to Overcome Overwhelmed: A Video by Terry Brock

Terry’s approach to his topics are down to earth, entertaining, and easy to grasp. 

Who is Terry Brock?
Terry is a marketing and communication expert who shares ideas on how to use technology to build business relationships. He helps individuals and organizations realize potential they didn’t know existed.

Terry Brock is a columnist for Business Journals (43 papers across America), a blogger, and a marketing coach. He has worked with clients like AT&T as Editor in Chief for their award-winning industry blog and with Skype as their Chief Enterprise Blogger.

Terry’s message says it all.  Once we learn that we are in control things calm down.  We tend to blame others or the circumstances. Asking ourselves…why not?…helps us stop the blame game and look for action and solutions.  Technology is overwhelming for some people.  They try to learn too many new things at once and they end of giving up the process.  Once we learn how to change “No Way” to “Not Yet” we gain control and give ourselves time to learn new and exciting technologies.  Prioritizing which new strategies to learn also helps.  I’m still exploring all the benefits of using LinkedIn.  I have taken classes, read books and it’s exciting to decide which aspects I want to explore…not everything…just the ones that fit for now.

Computer/Internet Addiction Causes and Effects

Computer Addiction – A Worrying New Problem
As we all know, computers and the internet have transformed the way in which we live and work. In many cases, this transformation has been for the better. It is a rare business indeed which could conduct itself without the aid of computers nowadays! However, the internet can also be a source of problems within the workplace. Browsing the internet during ‘downtime’ or even during work time can become problematic, productivity-wise, and measures like restricting the use of certain websites are likely to cause conflict between managers and workforce.

More desirable is if employees choose of their own accord to use the internet responsibly – but this is becoming harder and harder as our culture becomes more and more saturated with cyberspace. A growing problem is that of ‘computer addiction’, which can cause as many workplace troubles as any other addiction – if not more so.
‘Computer addiction’ or ‘internet addiction’, while known about for years, has only recently made it into the definitive list of mental disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders.

However, what the manual has to say about it is worrying. According to leading experts in the field, as many as one in every four children may have an internet addiction. This manifests in the same manner as any other addiction – with compulsive seeking out of the internet, a sickly euphoria when on a computer, and even withdrawal when internet access is restricted. In a workplace, it can result in antisocial behavior, in a loss of productivity, in lack of motivation, and in problematic behavior regarding workplace computers. If you suspect that internet addiction may be a problem in your workplace, then you need to act immediately.

An Internal Fight Inside All of Us
