Video #3 in the Series Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace

#BulliesIntheworkplace  #bullies  #CommunicationStrategies

I have an important question for you:  What is done when bullies take over in your workplace?
Clients tell me that bullies in the workplace are not punished and thrive when there is no established rule.  No one in the company has the will to stop bullying!   Many times leaders just don’t know how to change this environment.  This is one of my motivations for creating this new video series.  All the 14 videos are perfect for you to share with your team.  They are short and each one has strategies for you to put to use right away.

Welcome to the video series – “Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace.”
This video will give you information on why bullies get away with their destructive behavior.

How companies can change a toxic environment with bullies in the workplace

  • Make enforcement procedures
  • Intervene
  • Education and training are critical
  • Start documenting complaints
  • Create a code of honor to be clear about accountability when bullies in the workplace take over

Most bullies would stop if rules change and bullies are held accountable with clear expectations from leadership.

More thoughts from Joyce on bullies in the workplace

I know that this topic is hitting home to many of my readers because they send me private emails about bullies in their life.  The last few videos in the series have dealt with the definition of a bully, are you a target, and not being victimized by bullies.  We need to look internally when we meet these difficult people and take the communication skills that we already have and put them out there.  Our new tag line is “find your voice with Joyce.”  People want to be heard and gain control back.  The next videos will have strategies on what your company can do and actual words you can say.  Stay tuned because there are 14 videos in the series.

Who gets targeted by bullies in the workplace?

  • You are targeted because you pose a threat to him or her.
  • This is in the mind of the bully.
  • Targets are more technically skilled than the bully.
  • Bullies stalk targets who are better liked and have better social skills than the bully.
  • The bully’s target has a sense of integrity and is respected at work.

More thoughts from Joyce about bullies in the workplace

The challenge for my coaching clients is to see that they can have control with bullies in the workplace.  They feel like victims at times.  There are no victims without volunteers.  Once clients see the importance of breaking patterns, they start to see hope and are open to practicing the communication strategies during our sessions.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter

Video 1: Facts about Bullying in the Workplace

Do you want to know new facts about bullying in the workplace?
If so, you are in the right place.  I’ve created this series because clients tell me that they don’t know how to deal with these difficult people.
As a result, this blog is the 1st video from our new series, “Protecting yourself from Bullies in the Workplace.”

Facts about Bullies in the Workplace

  • Bullying is a form of violence
  • 1/3 of the US workforce experiences bullying
  • Bullying is 4 times more prevalent than illegal harassment
  • 40% of targets never tell their employers.

Think about your workplace for a moment.  Do employees feel safe to report bullies or is there an element of fear because they feel that they will not be listened to by leadership?  You will find valuable information that you can use with your own bullies in this blog series.  Feel free to share your bullying situation with me and I will send suggestions.

What is the definition of Bullying in the Workplace?

  • Sabotage over a significant amount of time
  • Verbal abuse, intimidation, or humiliation
  • It’s all about the bully’s personal agenda.

New Video Series on Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace

What role do you play when it comes to difficult people and those bullies in the workplace?
I ask the same question to my coaching clients who thought they had no power with bullies in the workplace.

Clients have asked me to add content on bullies in the workplace to my “Kick Conflict to the Curb to Get the Respect YOU Deserve” training.  The last 2 years have been fascinating doing my own research on the topic along with reading new information on bullies.

As a result of this journey, I’ve created a new video series called How to Protect Yourself from Professional Bullies.
Make sure to visit this blog for the next couple of months where you will find a new video on bullies in the workplace.  Send me questions and comments so I can personalize the video series

Video Topics that you will experience watching the Bullies in the Workplace Series

  • Are you a target?
  • How to protect yourself from bullies.
  • What formal process to use when working with bullies.
  • How to change a bullying environment.

3 Accountability Strategies to Stay Employed!

Would you like to learn 3 accountability strategies to help you stay employed?
What is one reason why your organization should keep you?

One of my clients asked me to talk to her high-level administrative professionals on “Empowering Yourself to Success.”  Her team is doing a GREAT job. My task was to encourage them to get to their next level of continuous improvement and dig deep discussing the 3 accountability strategies.

This blog post contains some of the content that I used in the training. I hope that you enjoy these ideas.

Make sure and share your concerns, stories, or questions about employee engagement…to reduce conflict in the workplace.

Check out this podcast on TEAM Synergy.

Accountability Strategy #1:  Doing Your Personal BEST

The comments below are answers from my research to the question, “How do you do your personal best?”

  • “I ask for more things to do.”
  • “The more I know, the more I can contribute.”
  • “I do what I can to make my boss look good.”

I shared the platform with Olympic Gold Medalist, Mary Lou Retton.  She told me how she feels about doing your personal best.
“Champions don’t wait 4 years to make their heroic opportunity.  They create an opportunity every day.  Champions practice because they treat workouts as the Olympics.  Anyone could win in the Olympics, but could doesn’t count.”

Accountability Strategy #2:  Adding Value Accountability Strategy

  • Make sure that you contribute more than you cost.
  • Make a difference.
  • Add enough value so that something very important would be missing if you left!

What are the reasons why your organization should keep you?  Hey, if you don’t toot your own horn…who will?  Your answer may be a good one to keep during your next evaluation. 🙂

Accountability Strategy #3:  Use this post for a team meeting

Share this post with your team and ask them the same question on why the organization should keep them employed.  This is a great team exercise which I use during my training.

  • People who are modest are asked to go deep and share because we all need to know our strengths.
  • People who like boasting about themselves are asked to be very honest and share their talents.
  • The team will let them know if they are just bragging.
  • Be careful with this one because at times conflict can come out of these transparent exercises.  Conflict is great when things get resolved and communication goes deep.
  • You know where to find me if you want me to help you discuss these important issues and hold each other accountable.
