My Favorite Motivational Quote from Aesop to Start Your New Year

favorite quote | Joyce Weiss

Happy New Year to you and your family!

I thought that this motivational quote is a perfect one to share with you as we start our new year.  Think of all the acts of kindness that you showed this past year – giving to your favorite charity, helping the homeless, volunteering or so many other ways.favorite motivational quote | Joyce Weiss

An Act of Kindness Goes A LONG Way

I was spending some quality time with my grandson, Justin at our favorite restaurant.  We were talking about altruism.  Not a bad discussion to have with a 20-year-old! 🙂  Our waiter, Dylan was outstanding and we joked with him while he made the dining experience very special.  I decided to call over his manager to express our gratitude for Dylan’s professionalism.  I asked Dylan to join us because I wanted him to know what I was about to say to his manager.

Dylan’s eyes beamed with appreciation and his manager kept on thanking us for recognizing his star employee.  Justin said, “Joycee
(that’s what my 3 grandkids call me) you just showed an altruistic act.”

I didn’t even realize that when I was giving Dylan’s manager the positive feedback.  This small act of kindness was for one reason and one reason only, to make sure that Dylan’s manager knew how much we appreciated the entire meal, especially the service.

How do You Show Your Appreciation to Others?

Think about small acts of kindness that you showed this year, it feels great plus someone else benefits besides us.

Please let me know how you show acts of kindness.  Let’s spread this feeling to others because there is so much negativity and hate and these little things make a huge difference for others.

I always say that I change the world, one person at a time when I coach emerging leaders, individuals or small groups to kick conflict to the curb to get the respect that they deserve.  It doesn’t take much these days to show appreciation for someone else.

I thank all of my loyal readers for your comments, interest, and questions all of these years.  I appreciate you – big time!
Let’s toast each other at midnight. 🙂

Until next time,

Seasons Greetings from Joyce Weiss

Joyce Weiss

I hope that you are spending some quality time with your friends, family and yourself during this holiday season!

Thoughts from Joyce

I was speaking to my son, Ron Weiss (RonWeissAttorney.com) about life the other day.  He came up with a simple yet important idea that is a good reminder for all of Joyce Weiss | Ron Weissus.  This coming year let’s do our best to appreciate what we have in our life.  We need to stop comparing our lives to others on their success either with family or work.

Social media does not help when we see the trips, family photos, promotions, etc from our friends.  “The grass has always been greener” when we look at others.  It does not have to be this way.  The moment we start looking at our reality and not making comparisons to others is the moment that we start enjoying our life.

Family, friends, and clients are three areas in my life that I NEVER take for granted.  It takes time, compromise, tough conversations, and positive energy to create these valuable relationships.

Joyce Gets Real

I can hear some of you say, “Joyce, I know this but my relative is so down and compares his or her life to others while ignoring the positives.”
Believe me, we all have friends and relatives who are down and out at times and who need a gentle reminder (ok not always gentle) on this important subject.  We all need a push at times and that’s why inspirational books, quotes, and trainers help others find joy in their life.

I will include some of my favorite motivational quotes and posters for the next few posts that you can share with those who need to hear this message.

Ron Weiss, I thank you for your gentle reminders to your mom at times to keep me on track.  That’s what families and good friends do.  We support and help each other when we are down and out or during positive moments.

Video #7: Verbal Aikido to Stop Bullies from Making You Feel Defensive

#bulliesintheworkplace #coach #verbalaikido

I have an important question for you:
Do you want to add an easy strategy in your tool-box to gain control with difficult people and bullies in the workplace?

Welcome to video #7 in the series “Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace”:  Verbal Aikido to gain control with bullies and difficult people. Today I’ll share how you can pull back when others push you with their negativity

Bullies in the Workplace Strategy #1:  At Times we Need to Bully the Bully

You heard me right.  Bullies admire those who speak with strength and don’t let bullies get away with their negative behavior. bullies in the workplace

Here’s an example I used with my coaching client who was tired of feeling defensive all the time when a bully constantly pushed her.

The bully said, “All our managers don’t know anything about how hard it is to work with our demanding clients.”  My client used to push back by saying, “How can you say that?” – pushing back.  She learned this new approach below after only a couple of sessions.

She agreed with the bully.  For example, “You’re right.  We may not understand how tough it is with these unhappy clients – please let me know how we can support your efforts.” This is an example of Verbal Aikido.  Pulling back and not pushing back.  I always say that it’s a huge risk using these strategies with bullies.  I also know that when it works out, it’s worth the risk.

Stay tuned for more examples of how clients gained control by using verbal aikido.

Video 6: Changing our Attitudes to Protect Ourselves from Bullies in the Workplace

Does your attitude affect how you deal or don’t deal with bullies in the workplace?

Welcome to video #6 in the series “Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace.”  This week’s post and video describe how our attitude affects our communication when we deal with bullies.  I know this is nothing new!  It’s all about attitude!

The better we feel about ourselves, the fewer times we have to knock someone down in order to feel tall!
Odetta, American Singer, and Actor
I would like to give bullies Odetta’s quote – wouldn’t you?

Strategy #1:  How Your Attitude Affects Your Interactions with Bullies

One of my coaching clients practiced how to make conversations safe with me before he had the tough conversation.  His bully actually listened to him after the interaction.  This bully was not aware that his words hurt others.  No one had the nerve to speak with him.  My client did and the bully now has respect for him.  Instead of saying, “Why do you like insulting our team members?”  He changed this to, “Let’s all discuss how we can communicate better with everyone on our team.”  The bully was included in the conversation and the team opened up with solid solutions and deep conversations.  A win/win was the result.

Strategy #2:  How Your Attitude Affects Your Interactions with Bullies

What can you do?

  • Stop complaining about the bully to others
  • Create a plan
  • Go to leadership
  • Practice the communication skills that you learned in the seriesYou can search for the entire series – Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace on the links below:
LinkedIn, My YouTube Channel or This Blog:

Here’s a disclaimer!  It’s always a risk to have tough conversations.  At least you tried!  You didn’t stand still and take the constant sarcasm or criticism from this difficult person.

Generations in the Workplace: Listening to the Needs of Millenials

At times I share articles from colleagues and authors that I feel would interest my readers.  Generations in the workplace is a hot topic today.  It’s a subject that clients want me to address when I work with small group training. The article and graphic describe how to create a creative office space for Millenials.  Thanks to Century Office for sharing this fascinating information.  Let me know how you enjoy the concepts.

Is it worth switching to a Millenial Office Space?

You might have observed that more often than not, the workplaces where customers or clients do not visit are significantly less appealing to look at. This anomaly or could not get past the workforce of the millennial generation and they want to change it. According to global workspace provider Mindspace, poor office design accounted for over 20% of millennials for turning down a job.

Did you know that 31% of the UK workforce feels that they feel uninspired to work at their current workplace? A simple place to start would be to introduce natural light and also have a bright-colored theme that will add energy to a somewhat dull room. Another very effective way to make office space more lively is to have plants indoors, and not just in hallways. Plants such as peace lily that need very low-maintenance and can thrive in medium-low light will be perfect for desks.

Having a packed sitting space for the employees also hampers their productivity. Open spaces should be provided to creative go-getters to generate more inspiration to work. Having spare space allows employees to get their creative juices flowing and generate their peak performance. Check out the below infographic from century-office to learn some other benefits of switching to a millennial office space.
