Negative People are Part of Our Reality!

It’s true that negative people are part of our reality.
Here’s a powerful question for you – How many times do you remind yourself that you don’t need to be with people who bring you down?
We all know this, yet many of us don’t know that we can set boundaries and actually change this reality.

Yearly I do a serious job of spring cleaning for clothes, the house, and relationships that are toxic.  You heard me right.  We all have those people who constantly complain yet never change anything in their life.  Life is too short to be around negative people who rain on our or their parade.

Start thinking about how you can and need to spend more time with those who make you laugh, smile, think, learn, etc.  We all have our own definition of toxic people.  Remember this the next time you speak to a friend who complains about everything.  I’m not saying to end the relationship all the time.  Implement a plan to be with those who support you and bring joy to your life.

Please let me know how this motivational poster on negative people speaks to you in the comment section.

A Great Quote on Communication from Bernard Shaw

Thoughts from Joyce

Do you agree with George Bernard Shaw?  People think that they are great multitaskers.  They don’t see how many communication mistakes take place when they are not concentrating on the person right in front of them.  I’m guilty of this also and do what I can to put down the phone when someone is in front of me.  The next time someone accuses you of not listening, agree with them and lift your eyes up.  It’s not rocket science and we all need to improve in this area. It’s ALL generations!   😉

A Powerful Communication Tool to Use with Supervisors

Do these questions resonate with you?

  • Has your supervisor discounted you in front of your team?
  • Are you tired of gossip and negativity?

If so, this article will give you a communication tool to start using immediately with your supervisor and team.  You will learn 2 strategies that I teach during professional coaching sessions and resolving conflict trainings.  It will be a great review for those of you who are familiar with these communication tools.

Communication Tool #1:
Expressing your concern to a supervisorcommunication tool

This case scenario is one that happens way too often.  Your supervisor discounts you in front of your direct reports.  Here’s a communication tool to use to voice your concern.

Make the conversation safe by using:  I don’t want – I do want.
I don’t want to be disrespectful.
I do want to communicate my concern about questioning my decisions in front of my team.

Next use the power talk formula:  I am – when – because
I am discouraged when my decisions are discounted in front of my team because it discredits my leadership.

Communication Tool #2:  Stop team negativity communication tool

This communication tool is perfect to use when you are sick of team gossip or negativity.  You can use this in front of your entire team or with an individual.

I don’t want to hear constant gossip and negativity.
I do want people to communicate directly to each other when there is an issue and NOT gossip with others.

I am concerned when I hear team gossip and negativity because the atmosphere at work is toxic.

Joyce’s Thoughts

There are no guarantees that you will get the results that you want after using these communication tools. These strategies are a great way to start the conversations. You will respect yourself for expressing yourself.  Hopefully your supervisor and team will respect you for being open in a respectful way.

Remember these two leadership ideas:

  • Leaders need to empower their team members to resolve communication issues on their own.
  • The team can meet with the leader only when the team attempts to resolve the issues on their own.

I want to hear from you

Add a comment to my blog on how you successfully share your concerns with your supervisor. What stories or expressions help you get through these conversations? You will receive a response from me because I enjoy connecting with my readers! 🙂  You are always welcome to send me a private email HERE with concerns that you are experiencing at work.

A New Tool to Enhance Your Communication Skills and Relationships

  • Do you wonder about your communication skills after certain conversations?
  • Have you dealt with people who win every argument with you?
  • Do you wonder why this happens?
  • Would you like to know how to stop this destructive communication?

This article will cover all four questions.  My coaching clients have shared with me their frustration with bullies and other difficult people who know how to manipulate the conversations.  By now you know that my skill set is all about resolving conflict either at work or home.

Communication Skills Strategy #1: Don’t Let the Difficult Person Control Youcommunication skills

We need to trust ourselves when we are around difficult people.  We need to give ourselves internal pep talks such as – “I’m ok” and “I’m in control.”  This may sound simple; however, difficult people know how to make others feel insecure by their bullying behavior.  Remember, it’s all about THEIR behavior and not yours.

Communication Skills Strategy #2:  Understand the Difficult Person’s Behavior

It’s usually about the insecurity of the bully or difficult person.  They win every argument because they know how to manipulate others.  Most people don’t confront the difficult person because they are afraid that things could escalate.  Go to the search bar and look for my previous articles to learn more about bullies.

Communication Skills Strategy #3:  Know the Behavioral styles of the Difficult Person

The DISC Profile is a solid and tested assessment to help you understand your behavior and the behavior of others.
It’s full of strategies to help improve your communication skills and relationships.

Here are four behavioral styles:
Dominance:  Direct, tough-minded, forceful
Influence:  Outgoing, enthusiastic, optimistic
Conscientiousness:  Analytical, reserved, private
Steadiness:  Even-tempered, accommodating, tactful

Each of these four behavioral styles consists of strengths and weaknesses.  It’s important to know your style in order to use your communication skills in the best way.

Let me know if you are interested in finding out about your behavioral style.

Communication Skills Strategy #4:  Learn How to Stop Others From Controlling You  Communication Skills

Inscape Publishing has introduced a new and powerful tool  – DISC® Productive Conflict Assessment.  It explores both your constructive and destructive communication skills and behaviors.  Once you discover this information about yourself, you are on your way to stop others from winning or controlling your conversations.

You will learn how to step back and challenge your actions.  This new assessment tool is exciting and the results are impressive!

Please call me to receive your own copy of the DISC® Productive Conflict Assessment.  I am offering a VIP coaching rate if you want to go deeper and discover how you will gain more control, experience less stress, and understand yourself and others to gain the respect that you deserve!

Let’s Get Real

Conflict is inevitable at work or home.  The solution is to know the best way to use your communication skills with difficult people or situations.  There is usually an easy approach –  I know first hand that this strategy works.  Hey, I live my life this way.  My experience helps me help my clients improve their home and working conditions.

I hope that this article gives you useful ideas on how to transform your uncomfortable encounters into stronger relationships.

Timely quote from Albert Einstein

There seems to be a pattern these days about people not being vocal reporting unethical or inappropriate behavior.  Here are several reasons why this behavior is swept under the rug:

  • You could get in trouble with the boss by reporting sexual harassment or discrimination of any kind
  • Your complaints are ignored by HR due to corporate politics
  • Your family member could get mad or even arrested (drug or alcohol abuse).

I strongly agree with Einstein’s quote below because the only way one can make positive changes is to confront these issues to the appropriate person, even though the perpetrator is a high profile an powerful person.  It’s a risk.  I realize this.

I have several clients who find it difficult reporting harassment or discrimination.  I ask them to weigh the pros and cons for reporting and not reporting these issues.  About 50% of them decide to report the situation because they could not live with themselves if this behavior continues.  They found a support system with trusted advisors on who to report the dangerous behavior.  The other 50% are risk adverse and decide it’s something that’s just too difficult to do.

Fear is a big part of this entire equation. All we have to do is watch or read our favorite news outlets to see how some of the situations are hidden for years.  Shame and fear play a dual role.  Listening to their stories remind us how brave people have to be to come forward.   I challenge all of you to weigh the options and do what you feel is best.
