Video on Coaching Skills to Use with Emerging Leaders

Are you a leader who has emerging leaders who are productive, yet weak with soft skills?
Do you want to know how you can help this employee?
If so you’re at the right place!

Many of you have been following my videos and blog posts since 2010 and I appreciate you!  For those who are new to my messages, you will see that I refer to several key communication strategies that help clients – kick conflict to the curb to get the results they deserve. Clients are emerging leaders, individuals, and organizations who want to reduce drama and find more peace in their life.

Coaching Skills with Emerging Leaders:  Meet Scott

I’d like you to meet Scott, an emerging leader who is one of the brightest stars in a midsized company.  There is only one reason why Scott did not get promoted. Scott had a blind spot and did not see what his leaders saw. Every time Scott opened his mouth, he had to prove to upper management that he was the brightest person in the room by sharing tons of details.  He got into the weeds.

Coaching Skills with Emerging Leaders:  Why did Scott’s Supervisor suggest coaching?

Leadership tuned Scott out when he gave reports in meetings. He knew he was not listened to but was unaware of his blind spot.  Scott was referred to me as a coaching client by his supervisor who believed in him. It took only a few sessions for Scott to recognize that he
gave too many details.  He admitted that he wanted to prove how smart he was.

Scott didn’t realize that this one communication barrier was stopping a promotion. He took a behavioral assessment that opened up Scott’s eyes to his strengths and areas to improve with his communication skills. In case you want to know the ending.  Yes, Scott worked on his soft skills and finally received a well-deserved promotion.

Discover How to Control Your Stress During These Chaotic Time

gain control with boundaries

  • Do you want to control your stress?
  • Have you been frustrated about being home 24/7 with your family during the pandemic of 2020?
  • Are the negativity and judgment starting to drive you crazy?
  • Do you want to find time for yourself between all the zoom meetings?
  • Is it time to change this?

If so please keep on reading!  There is a solution, I promise!

A friend and colleague of mine, Tom Borg owner of  Tom Borg Consulting, just gave me a stress quotient assessment from TTI.  Find out more about the STRESS Quotient below:

This is an easy assessment and I found it very helpful!  Reach out to me if you want to discover what you need to change in order to control your stress. Call my cell: 248.310.6998 or send an email:  Joyce@JoyceWeiss.com

What did the assessment say about Joyce’s stress?

There was NO surprise with the results yet the evaluation was necessary for me to see how I could control my stress better. The stress quotient showed that I’m in control of my day except in one area – meetings.  I don’t know about you, the last few months I’ve been on at least 3-6 zoom meetings each day.  I wanted to be in most of the meetings.  I took online courses on how to improve videos, engage clients during my online courses, 2 mastermind groups, plus connecting with clients.  These are all good reasons to be on zoom calls.

Once I saw the results I knew I needed to make a change.  I was starting to feel the pressure at the end of the day.  I figured out what I needed to change when I talked to Tom about my results.  I had to change directions.  One of my mastermind groups met daily at noon.  I was starting to resent the daily meetings even though they were always productive.  I took a risk during one of the sessions and shared my concern about being on these mastermind meetings daily.  The other members felt the same way and were in agreement to meet only 2 days per week.

The secret?  Boundaries

My challenge to you is to figure out where you need to set boundaries in your personal and professional life.   I already shared mine with you.
What conversations do you need to have to discuss setting boundaries and control your stress?  Please share what you need to do to take care of your time for you.

Let’s have a great discussion by including your thoughts in the comment area.  You know I will respond.  😉  Feel free to send me a private email if you want to go deeper.

Until next time,

Video on a Powerful Communication Strategy to Protect You When You are Angry

Do you want to use a powerful communication strategy to protect you before you open your mouth?
Do you ever say something and wish you didn’t?

If so, you are not alone.
I will give you a communication strategy that will help you by saying something that you wish you didn’t say.

This video will show you how to control your words before you decide to say something.  Stay tuned, next week’s video will take you even deeper!

Communication Strategy 1:  Quote from Norman Cousins norman cousins | communication strategy

American journalist, Norman Cousins said, Wisdom consists of the anticipation of consequences.

I just shared this communication strategy during an online communication program with a group of the chamber of commerce professionals.  They loved this communication strategy because it’s easy to use and they have stopped themselves from blurting out the wrong message.

Communication Strategy 2:  The GAP is an Important Tool

  • A stimulus is something that happens to us.  If someone interrupts you, the interruption is the stimulus.
  • The response is how we react after someone interrupts us.
  • THE GAP helps us make a choice on how we react.
  • Take a deep breath and step back for a moment.
  • We need to see the space between the stimulus and response instead of immediately talking.
  • Recognize when you are angry and get into the GAP.

How to Have a Tough Talk with Emerging Leaders who Ask for a Promotion When They are Not Ready

Would you like to learn a strategy on how to handle a conversation with emerging leaders who think they are ready for a promotion?
Do you know how to handle this situation when you know these emerging leaders don’t have the right skills for career advancement yet?

If so, you are in the right place.

The video below describes a tough conversation that my client had to create with one of her direct reports who is an emerging leader.
Enjoy the message and make sure and share your thoughts below.

https://youtu.be/oARXESLC5es

Emerging Leaders Story Background

As a career coach, I recently spoke to Beth – HR Director who is experiencing this dilemma with Bruce.  Bruce is a very capable manager who has much potential for growth.  She called me because she didn’t know how to handle this emerging leader.  She wanted to set him straight without stopping his desire to grow.

So Joyce, How did You Help Beth with her Emerging Leaders?

We discussed that we all have blind spots and at times we don’t realize how others see us.  At times we think we are better than we really are and visa versa. Beth’s dilemma was that she needed to be direct and truthful while respecting his desire to grow.  Bruce thought he was ready to become a Director when Beth knew he needed to sharpen his communication skills.

Beth was thrilled that we spoke because we practiced what she would say to Bruce.

Bruce, I don’t want to curb your desire for career development.  I applaud you for this.
I do want to suggest taking a course on leadership to hone your communication skills.
You have great potential.  Let’s discuss your next move in a few months after you take a few courses.

Bruce “got it.”  Beth did a great job and was direct while being honorable to his desire to grow.

Joyce’s Favorite Quote by Martin Luther King Jr. favorite quote | Martin Luther King Jr.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

Anyone who knows me realizes why I use this quote in my online communication course:  Kick Conflict to the Curb:  Get the Respect YOU Deserve!

I support clients who don’t know how to use their voices as much as they need to in order to get taken seriously or even heard.
Clients relate the moment I share Martin Luther King Jr’s words of wisdom.  We practice strategies to make them feel more confident.
I love this part of my job when people see the light after only a few sessions.
