Action Steps #1: Clarify the boundaries

What boundaries do you need to set for yourself to achieve a better work/life balance?

It’s time to go deep and discover boundaries that you need to share with others who waste your valuable time.
I’m suggesting that you do this for home and work.  These days most of us are working at home and the boundaries are blurred.

I just had this conversation with a new neighbor, Randy.

Randy saw that I just returned from a bike ride as he was introducing himself to my husband.  Randy said, “Joyce, my wife can join you on the trails because she loves bike riding too.”

I need my space and quiet when I walk or bike ride since virtual training and coaching is all about me listening and talking!  Hey, not complaining… these are my facts. 🙂

I said, “Randy, thanks for suggesting this.  Let’s get together on the weekend to get to know each other.  I need quiet when I’m on my bike or walk since that is my time to relax.”  He totally got it and said, “Hey, I get this and respect you for sharing your truth.”

I think this is going to be a great new relationship.  I set boundaries while still being cordial so we can get to know each other better.

What boundaries do you need to set for yourself?

Action Steps #2:  Deal with Bullies bullies in the workplace |action steps| bullies at work | bullying in the workplace

Hold meetings to discuss how Different = Different.  Different does NOT Equal Wrong.
This seems so easy. It’s not, yet this statement says it all. It’s a great lesson that we are not all alike.  The idea is for all of us to get to know people at work who don’t look or sound like us.

Bullies are put in their place when they see leadership sharing the importance of accepting each other’s differences.

We don’t need to like or respect everyone at work.  The idea is how to get along even when we don’t like our colleagues. It’s a true test of strength.  Believe me when I share that this is so hard for me yet I know that it’s necessary in order to reduce the drama at work and home.

Action Steps #3: Pull Back and Don’t Push Back

Pull back when bullies attack you with sarcasm. What is the best way to respond so that you feel good about yourself?
You can even walk away from someone who harasses you with constant sarcasm or anger.

Action Steps #4: Get in the Gap- Your Safe Place action steps

Gain control in tough conversations taking a breath to decide how you want to respond. The Gap is in the middle of you thinking what to say and opening your mouth.
It’s an important strategy to use in your toolbox because it will help you from possibly saying something you wished you didn’t say.

Action Steps #5: Learn to Be Direct with Respect® 

You will see a dramatic improvement in communication when you learn Be Direct with Respect®

All you need to do is use the following formula:  I am_________when _______ because ________.

Here’s an example:  I am frustrated when we all agreed with the new code of conduct because some of the team are still getting to work late.
This statement is strong and you can then go deeper and ask for feedback on how to rectify this situation.

My Favorite Conflict Resolution Skill to Use with Bullies

  • Do you want to use my favorite conflict resolution skill to gain control during tough conversations?
  • Are you ready to learn or relearn a communication strategy to use with bullies or others who push you?

Communication woes plague professionals across the board: Supervisors reprimand you in front of others. Coworkers tactlessly reject your ideas. Clients lash out at people to get what they want.

Conflict Resolution Skill #1:  Verbal Aikido

Rather than pushing back, getting even, or seething in silence, you can gain control of the situation and diplomatically deal with unkind people and behavior. The solution is called Verbal Aikido, and it’s a conflict resolution skill that won’t get you fired.

Conflict Resolution Skill:  A Definition of Verbal Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese form of self-defense that uses non-resistance to debilitate an opponent’s strength. The Aikido practitioner seeks to conflict resolution skillcounter attacks without bringing harm to the attacker to create balance. In other words, when pushed, you pull; when pulled, you push.

This technique is just as effective with verbal attacks. It allows you to respond to a verbal attack by accepting the comment, redirecting it, and reaffirming your stance in a positive manner. Avoid being hostile and building emotional barriers!

Conflict Resolution Skill:  Verbal Aikido Basics

The cardinal rule of this powerful conflict resolution skill is to not repeat the accusation. By doing so, you absorb the negative message.

EXAMPLE:

If someone questions a business purchase with an accusatory, “Why are you wasting the company’s money?” don’t respond by yelling, “I’m not wasting the company’s money! I need these items to perform my job!”

Such a response reinforces the blame on you. Instead, a verbal aikido practitioner would redirect the comment by saying, “Let me tell you how I invested the company’s money.”

Your Verbal Aikido response also reaffirms your control over unneeded emotional responses, thus giving the other person nothing to push against.

EXAMPLE:

Suppose you’re giving constructive criticism to a male co-worker who tells you, “What I did is perfectly fine. You’re just too emotional. All you women are alike.”

Instead of becoming emotional and reinforcing his claim, say, “I agree. I can overreact at times. Let me explain why I feel this way about the situation.”

This response accepts the basis of the situation without absorbing the negative aspects. However, you redirect the accusation by agreeing. The response also reaffirms the other person’s feelings of frustration. As a result, you diffuse the confrontation and can work toward repairing the situation.

Video 10: How to Handle Push Back From Your Audience

By now I hope that you view me as your personal communication strategist.  I have a few questions for you.

Welcome to video 10 in the series Secrets from a Communication Strategist to Engage Your  Audience.

The Communication Strategist Dilemma 

I was coaching a group of men and women who work with the public including the homeless population.  Paul, an audience member blurted out his thoughts in a loud and sarcastic voice.  “Joyce, you seem like a nice person BUT this will not work when we speak with people who live on the street.”

The Communication Strategist Solution

I took a deep breath and said, “Paul,  you’re right.  This strategy won’t work with the homeless.  It will work when you have communication issues with your colleagues.”

Paul took a step back (this is a good sign) and said, “You are right Joyce.  Thanks for coaching us on how to make the conversation safe at work.

 Today’s Lesson

Agree with the disgruntled person when someone pushes you back.  Your next step is to counter with a strong statement about how your strategy will work in another setting.  Of course, there will be times when agreeing with a disgruntled person is not appropriate and it won’t work.

Video #8: More Stories on Verbal Aikido to Help You Gain Control

Do you want to hear real examples of how you can use Verbal Aikido to gain control during tough conversations?

Welcome to video #8 in the series on working with bullies in the workplace. Today I will share real stories from my clients who practiced and perfected verbal aikido and put this powerful communication tool to use.

At times bullies leave us alone when we stand up to them because they know we’re up to the test when we pull back from their sarcasm or cruelty.  Are you ready for the two examples?

Example #1 on how to use verbal aikido to gain control of bullies

Sue told her bully, “Beth, don’t even start.” And Sue walked away.  The bully got the idea and didn’t bother her in the future.  Sue reached gain control | communication strategiesher bully!  It looks easy yet the reality is that it takes real courage just like Sue showed.  I’ve used this example several times and it works like a charm because I’ve practiced just like clients do with me.

Example #2 on how to use verbal aikido to gain control of bullies

A teenager who was shorter than most of her classmates was picked on by the mean kid in school when she said, “give me your sandwich shrimp.” My client told her bully, “Pick on someone who is your size” after she was ridiculed.  The mean guy stopped bullying her after this.

Joyce, let’s get real!

I know some of you are thinking that this sounds too good to be true.  At times verbal aikido works and at times it doesn’t.  You know by now my conviction – we need to plan and prepare for things to get worse or better.  It’s worth the risk when things improve after the tough conversation.

Video #7: Verbal Aikido to Stop Bullies from Making You Feel Defensive

Welcome to video #7 in the series “Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace”:  Verbal Aikido to gain control with bullies and difficult people. Today I’ll share how you can pull back when others push you with their negativity

Bullies in the Workplace Strategy #1:  At Times we Need to Bully the Bully

You heard me right.  Bullies admire those who speak with strength and don’t let bullies get away with their negative behavior. bullies in the workplace

Here’s an example I used with my coaching client who was tired of feeling defensive all the time when a bully constantly pushed her.

The bully said, “All our managers don’t know anything about how hard it is to work with our demanding clients.”  My client used to push back by saying, “How can you say that?” – pushing back.  She learned this new approach below after only a couple of sessions.

She agreed with the bully.  For example, “You’re right.  We may not understand how tough it is with these unhappy clients – please let me know how we can support your efforts.” This is an example of Verbal Aikido.  Pulling back and not pushing back.  I always say that it’s a huge risk using these strategies with bullies.  I also know that when it works out, it’s worth the risk.
