Top Tips on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists

Many of you already know that I write and speak about Tips on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists.  The articles following the video consist of 3 previous posts with strategies on dealing with Narcissists.  The video below will give you a new in site on this difficult person.

Tip #1 on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists

Be prepared to be thrown under the bus when dealing with Narcissists.  You read this right!  They are great at deflecting any responsibility especially when someone confronts them.  Remember the Narcissist is like a 2-year old who has a tantrum or blames someone else when others show dissatisfaction with him or her.  Protect yourself or support others who may be attacked by this difficult person.  Don’t take the conversation with the Narcissist personal.  This idea is so hard to follow because Narcissists are infuriating to work or live with.  You may not change the results when you have an interaction with the Narcissist BUT you will retain self-respect when you do your best NOT to get pulled into their web.

Tip #2 on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists:  What Happens When you Work with a Narcissist?

Joyce’s Thoughts on Workplace Conflict and Narcissists

I hear many of you describe how infuriating it is to work or live with a Narcissist.  I am in the process of researching this personality disorder even deeper to give you more strategies.  Remember to use the GAP technique (do a search on my blog for many articles on this important skill).  Take a step back when a Narcissist tries to attack you or pull you into their web.  Decide how you want to respond to this person.  I find that the GAP has saved me many times and it gets me in trouble when I don’t use it! 🙂  You don’t need to say anything, you can change the conversation or you may want to have an adult conversation with him or her.  The main idea is to decide what you want to say or not say.  You will thank me when you use the GAP.

New Ways to Cope with a Difficult Person

Are you a manager or director who wants to help your direct reports handle their own conflict in the workplace?

Do you work with a colleague who is selfish and doesn’t help your team?

If so, don’t go anywhere!  This post and video will help you understand how you or others react to these difficult people…especially the narcissist.

The video below is about New Ways to Cope with a Difficult Person.

CLICK HERE to learn if you are a target for a bully.

CLICK HERE to see if you work or live with a narcissist.

Different Ways That We Cope With Difficult People

  • Fighting or countering the attack
  • Fleeing or avoiding the situation
  • Giving in or surrendering to the threat

Why is it so Hard to Deal with a Narcissist?

  • What’s with me?
  • Am I simply a masochist?
  • How can I allow myself to be so fooled?
  • Why can’t I speak up and tell him/her to…?

The Danger of the Narcissist’s Charm

  • Their wit can be hypnotizing
  • They’re very clever and encourage you to be forgiving when he or she is out of line

If a narcissist is in your personal life, you may be attracted because of this characteristic.

 Thoughts From Joyce

  • Remember that we need to protect ourselves from the narcissist’s charm in order to get out of their dangerous web.
  • Once we realize what is happening we can set boundaries and decide what we need to do.

More Coping Skills When Dealing with a Narcissist

We are going to continue the conversation about narcissists because many of you have sent me private emails encouraging me to do so.  The next few posts will even go deeper on this frustrating personality disorder.

Enjoy this short video on how to deal with Narcissists

Coping Guidelines

  • Recognize when you are with someone who repeatedly evokes shame, anger and idealizes others
  • Plan ahead how to set boundaries since they excel at the control game
  • Find others who can support you
  • Try not to personalize since they do this to others
  • Think of Narcissists as a 2 year old on the inside
  • Document abuses and excuses for your own record to protect yourself

Do You Work or Live with a Narcissist?

Do you live or work with a person who is not only self centered, but is VERY fragile when you want to give any kind of constructive feedback?  If so you may work or live with a narcissist.  Enjoy the short video below to discover this difficult personality disorder.

Narcissists Have a Personality Disorder

  • An inflated sense of their own importance and deep need for admiration
  • Feel they are superior to others and have little regard for other people’s feelings
  • They hide behind a mask of ultra-self confidence
  • Behind this mask lays fragile self-esteem vulnerable to the slightest criticism

My Favorite Book Recommendations on Narcissism

  • Stop Walking on Egg Shells by Paul Mason
  • Disarming the Narcissist by Wendy Behary
  • Why is Everything Always About You? by Sandy Hotchkiss

Click Here to send me your questions.

I enjoy hearing from my readers.  Let me know your experience with narcissists.  More of my clients want me to add this topic to their programs since they don’t know how to deal with this frustrating personality disorder.
