5 Career Skills to Make the Best of Your Job

Career Skills is a topic that I cover in every workshop or coaching session.  It’s all about feeling positive about our jobs.  Let’s face it, we are at work more than we are at home!  Some people are fortunate because they find their jobs rewarding and actually love going to work.  Others can’t wait until the weekend and constantly complain to their families about how miserable the job is for them.

So if your work situation is less than ideal and you don’t want to change your job, here are some Career Skills strategies that may help.

Career Skills Strategy #1:  Do whatever it takes to get the job done

If you don’t like the job and find it difficult to complete projects, then the job won’t get done at all. It’ll be hanging over your head like a dark rain cloud. Also, if you don’t get the job done, someone else will, and then you’ll get the pink slip. If you feel that you can’t do whatever it takes to get the job done because of a lack of resources and your hands are tied, untie your own hands. Ask yourself what you could do differently given your existing resources. There’s always a second right answer.  You could collaborate with a team member and support each other with different tasks.

Career Skills Strategy #2: Do your best to stay positive and don’t let your negativity take over

Career Skills

How can you be positive when you dislike your job? Remember that at least you have a job. You’re paying your bills. You’re not part of the newest unemployment statistic. Find something positive to focus on to remind yourself how life would be if you didn’t have any job at all. In order to stay positive, strive for excellence, not because you have to, but because you want to.  This is not easy to do but necessary.  Others will sense your negativity.  You may not be looked upon as someone who could get a promotion.

Career Skills Strategy #3:  Be eager to share ideas with leaders and colleagues

You can’t work in a vacuum. You need to talk with others and collaborate in order to expand your thinking and gain a new perspective. And you never know… someone may say something to remind you that your job isn’t so bad after all.  Start looking for ways to improve productivity or customer satisfaction.  Share these ideas with your boss and at meetings.  This could help you feel better about your job.  Using this Career Skills strategy may get leaders to pay attention to you and your good ideas.

Career Skills Strategy #4:  Ask your boss or human services if there are different options that could match your Careers Skills and Path

Career Skills

Many of my clients have used this Career Skills strategy to develop their careers by working in a different setting in the company.  It’s always a risk to let others know that you want to make a change.  Make sure and keep your negativity intact when you have these conversations. Let leaders know that you want to remain at the company and are open to exploring other options.

Career Skills Strategy #5:  Look for ways to constantly grow

We are all a work in progress. Growth and learning are Career Skills that we must initiate; we can’t expect others to do it for us. Additionally, lifelong learning will make you more competitive in the marketplace. You will be more employable and will have the skills and mindset to find a better job if you decide to leave your current position.

Individual Coaching for Professional Development

Do you know someone who is receiving individual coaching?
Have you wondered what the benefits are for using a coach?
Do you know individuals who could use some guidance for their own career path or communication barriers?

Many of my clients who use my services as a workshop trainer also ask me to become an individual coach for team members who they want to promote or who need to improve their communication skills.  This article will take you through the process that I use during the individual sessions.   Clients and I have weekly accountability telephone sessions.  An option is to include the client’s supervisor to discuss expectations and realistic goals which will produce change and new outcomes. My clients receive candid feedback and guidance to create action steps and solid results.

We use the following 3 strategies which help clients discover blind spots. We discuss areas for improvement and build on their strengths.

Individual Coaching Strategy #1:  Focus Development

  • What have I accomplished since our last session?
  • What are the challenges that I am facing now?
  • What are the opportunities available to me right now?
  • What am I willing to change in order to move toward my goals?

Individual Coaching Strategy #2:  Using Assessment Tools

  • Discover the client’s strengths and areas for improvement
  • Professional growth tools to fit the needs of each client
  • Tips to use when things get tense especially when others differ from the client’s behavioral pattern
  • Understand the priorities of others and how these priorities may differ from their own

Individual Coaching Strategy #3:  Collaboration Strategies

  • Strategies on how to deal with sarcasm, negativity, and silence
  • Discuss and practice tools to make most conversations safe
  • The GAP strategy which will give clients control on how to respond even during heated discussions
  • Be Direct with Respect® techniques are used which will give clients a tool to use during tough conversations
  • Each session contains exercises to resolve conflict and move clients forward

Professional Development Strategies To Manage Upward (Part 2)

Many of you sent me private emails after you read the last post on Professional Development Strategies to Manage Upward.  I decided to continue the conversation.

Here are 2 questions that will be covered in this post:

  1. What important conversations do you need to have with your boss?
  2. How have you used an experience with a bad manager/boss so you don’t become like him or her?

The content comes from numerous client interviews who shared this valuable information.  As you read their responses, think how you would answer me if I asked you these questions.  You may decide to have important conversations with your boss!

Professional Development Strategies #1:  What important conversations do you need to have with your boss?

A Director of an organization told me that he has career uncertainty.  “It’s like a race and fighting for the position.  I have the aspiration to be the CEO of the company.  I keep in check with superiors and I’m having the necessary conversations.  I ask them what I need to do to get there.  Am I doing something that you want me to change?  I have received important feedback to work on my professional development. Some of my colleagues think that I’m being aggressive.  I don’t feel that way because I’m not being pushy.  I’m asking top leaders what I need to do to get promotions.”

Thoughts from Joyce about Professional Development Strategies #1

My client will probably become the  CEO in the future because he is asking the right questions to the best people.  Many people are too timid to ask for what they want/need.  This passive behavior doesn’t work very well because if we don’t show that we are strong leaders, we won’t become one.  Remember, “You Get What You Tolerate!”  If we wonder internally why we don’t get promoted…and don’t take action, we will continue not advancing in our career.  People tell me that they are shy and just can’t have these important conversations.  I tell them to stop labeling themselves as “shy” since that behavior will not be beneficial if they want to become a future leader.

How have you been promoted?  What important conversations have you had OR do you need to have with your leaders?

Professional Development Strategies #2:  How have you used an experience with a bad manager so you don’t become like him or her?

An emerging leader told me that her former boss never appreciated the team.  She said, “As a result of my previous boss, I make sure to do what I can to appreciate my team.  Food seems to work well at this job!  We have hot dog Fridays and grill outside for lunch.  They decide what restaurant they want to visit when it’s their birthday.  I give them gift certificates yearly and they appreciate this a lot.  We give a generous yearly bonus for all employees no matter how long they have been here.  We have weeded out the slackers because everyone on the team deserves this recognition especially when we do well during the year.”

Thoughts from Joyce on Professional Development Strategies #2

It’s not rocket science to know the importance of appreciation.  The challenge for many leaders is that they take appreciation for granted.  At least 50% of my coaching clients have told me that appreciation is something that doesn’t come easily to them.  This is not surprising because many of them did not have the best bosses to learn from in their own experience.

Food really does work.  It does not need to cost you a lot of money.  Ask your team what kind of food to include in future meetings.  Invite them to plan a pot luck lunch.  This is an easy fix to improve morale.  Celebrate the diversity of your team by encouraging them to share foods from their culture.  Your team will learn about each other and watch the morale improve.

I want to hear from you!

CLICK HERE to send me your questions about creating important questions with your boss.  What is your experience with a bad boss and how have you learned from him or her? Have you read any good business books lately? I’d love to hear about them.

Keys to Develop The Next Generation in the Work Place

The Millennial generation in the work place can be a struggle or asset.
Are you a leader who wants to understand the millennial generation in the work place?
Do you want to keep your star millennials from jumping ship?
Great!  This article will provide you with 4 simple techniques to attract, develop and keep the next generation motivated.

Millennials matter because they are entering the workforce in larger numbers than any of their previous generations in the workplace!

Complaints From Leaders Who Work with the Millennial generation in the Work Place

Do these sound familiar?

  • They don’t have a good work ethic
  • When they are bored they leave and go to our competitor
  • I don’t know how to talk to them
  • They are always on their devices
  • They don’t know how to have a face to face conversation

I hear comments like this all the time from my clients who are frustrated with this next generation.  I challenge leaders to stop complaining or judging and start getting to know these bright young employees. Communication is improved once the bridges are removed…from both sides!

Key #1 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place:   Equality and Diversity

The next generation in the workplace seeks out employers with a strong record on equality and diversity.  Employers need to do more than “talk the talk”.  They must foster inclusive talent and advancement strategies.

Key #2 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place: Work-Life Balance

The next generation expects to have time in their life.  They want to live their life to the fullest.  Organizations need to recognize that work-life balance and flexibility is a talent-wide proposition.

Key #3 to Develop The Millennial Generation in the Work Place:  A Feedback Culture

Millennials welcome and expect regular feedback.  Yes, they are connected to the digital world!  Their preference is for critical feedback discussions to take place face to face.  Companies of choice understand this important need and train leaders to communicate directly and to have productive career development feedback sessions often.

Key#4 to Develop the Millennial Generation in the Work Place: Reputation is Very Important

Millennials want their work to have a purpose, to contribute something to the world and to be proud of their employer.  Companies need to develop community outreach programs more so than ever before to attract this vital generation

Joyce’s Thoughts on How to Develop the Next Generation in the Work Place

I will continue to share research on this important topic because my clients struggle with millennials.  The challenge is for all generations to be open and share their needs and expectations.  This is not new.  It is possible to remove generational barriers as long as the dialogue is judgment free.  The results are impressive after my clients put these keys into practice.  They really do work.

I will be including more detail on this topic for the next few articles.

Strategic Communications: The Truth About Delegation

Are you a manager who wants to empower your employees and learn strategic communications?
Are you experiencing more pressure from your boss while attempting to manage your entire department?
Great!  This article will provide you with strategies to use to reduce YOUR stress at work and empower your employees at the same time.

Delegation Challenges

Delegation won’t work if your employees don’t trust you and if they don’t have the right skills.  This is a perfect time for you to coach certain team members who have the potential to help them grow professionally.  It may be a good time to have a realistic conversation about your expectations.  Make sure and share specific details on what will happen if the employee doesn’t improve by a certain time.  The rest of the article will help you encourage your skilled employees to grow which will improve the trust.

Strategic Communications Tip #1:  Delegation has Clear Options

Check out the list below.  Start with the top of the list – when you don’t trust an employee, and work to the bottom of the list – when you have total trust in an employee.  Once people learn responsibility, you can confidently stop micromanaging!

  1. Look into this problem.  Give me all the facts.  I will decide what to do.

      2.  Let me know the available alternatives.

      3.  Recommend a course of action for my approval.

      4.  Let me know what you intend to do.  Do it unless I say not to.

      5.  Take action.  Let me know what you did.  Let me know how it turns out.

      6.  Take action.  Communicate with me only if your action is unsuccessful.

      7.  Take action.  No further communication with me is necessary.

Strategic Communications #2:  Advantages of Delegation

You don’t need to do everything yourself.  When you’re able to delegate well, you’ll experience that delegation helps:

  • Save time
  • Build stronger staff
  • Motivate employees
  • Build mutual trust
  • Improve quality of work
  • Help overworked managers

Strategic Communications From Joyce

If you are a manager who recognizes that you are not doing the greatest job in the delegation area, believe me, you are NOT alone!  My executive coaching practice has shown me that many great leaders never learned how to coach others and develop their team.  This is a skill that must be taught and experienced.  Cicero wrote, “Where there is life, there is hope!”  🙂
