Career Development Tips: Be Your Own Best Advocate |Video

Are you ready to discover career development tips to use for yourself or your direct reports?

Certified Professional Coach, Lori Shook presented the ideas I’m sharing in this video to the World of Business and Executive Coaching Summit.

So how can you help yourself or your direct reports discover how to be their own best advocate?
Here’s a possible strategy:  Discover their internal inner board of directors.

I have used the exercise with coaching clients and the results are stellar.

Human Resource clients consider me their partner: especially when they have no time to coach:

  • Emerging leaders to grow
  • Employees who need to use their voice without losing their cool
  • Managers who need to control difficult team members

The video below gives you ideas to get you started with this unique exercise.

Here are EASY career development tips to help you identify your internal board of directors

I call this our internal wisdom.

We all have internal voices or characters that influence our behaviors. When we name them, we will be able to use them as resources.

There are NO good or bad board members. Some will be more useful than others at different times.

Here are several of the inner boards that my clients discovered:

  • The energizer
  • Frankenstein
  • Am I good enough?
  • Risk-averse
  • Cheerleader
  • Enjoy the journey
  • Leader
  • Controller

Start by asking these questions to add to your career development tips toolbox:

  • What is an inner voice that you really trust?
  • Which inner characters help you succeed?
  • What are the inner impulses that get in your way in important situations?

Define your board of directors and give them a name

  • Which of your inner board will help you/hurt you/stop you?
  • Invite the board members you want to use more often
  • Find ways to manage the uninvited ones
  • Take ownership of your behaviors

Look for my video next week which will cover more ideas on your Inner Board.

As a valued blog follower, I’m reaching out to let you know of an exciting new course I’m offering. Kick Conflict to the Curb, a six-week program, is launching in September. It’s designed to create master communicators and I want to share this incredible opportunity with you.

Deemed the “Queen of Conflict Resolution,” I’ll show you how to communicate with respect, decrease interruptions, set boundaries, use constructive feedback, and identify triggers before overreacting. Attendees of Kick Conflict to the Curb will learn how to effectively manage bullies, slackers, micromanagers, and others who are creating toxic environments. Ultimately, you’ll gain lasting conflict resolution skills, enabling you to handle most any situation that arises, whether at home, at work, or within personal relationships.

During these unusually stressful times, people are feeling overwhelmed. And with elevated levels of stress, disputes are quicker to erupt in almost any relationship. Don’t put your marriage, career, or friendships at risk. Through my interactive course, I’ll provide the peace and long-term results you deserve as we Kick Conflict to the Curb together!

A Certified Virtual Presenter and Master Coach with three decades of experience, I’m offering live, online training, and instruction throughout the six weeks. In addition to Zoom course meetings, as a bonus, I’ll also provide two 30-minute private coaching sessions by phone (a $500 value) and engage participants weekly in a private Facebook group. In a nutshell, I’m not just pushing handouts, I’m working personally with you, so you’ll walk away with real skills to gain control during the conflict and communicate strategically.

For a limited time, I’m offering this six-week course for only $497 to a select group of my supporters. You’ll save hundreds of dollars through this special offer. More importantly, you’ll reap rewarding life skills. But do act quickly, as seats are limited.

The special savings are good until September 10th with the course starting September 15th at 4:00 pm. I may add another class time to accommodate schedules because I understand flexibility is key as we navigate these challenging times.

Call to find out how to get started with the instructional fun or go to www.paypal.me/joyceweiss1/497 to join today. Let’s Kick Conflict to the Curb and end the drama! I’ll look forward to it!

Yours sincerely,

Joyce Weiss

Video # 4: Does Your Organization Have A Process to Deal with Bullies?

https://youtu.be/omVREQe139M

#bullies #bulliesintheworkplace #coach #careercoach #communicationstrategist

Welcome to video #4 in the series – Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace

Does your company have a process to deal with bullies in the workplace?

This video and article describe 4 different levels of intervention.  Clients who use this process have seen positive results because leaders can address the bully with this system. It’s never easy having these tough conversations.  Leaders who don’t know how or who sweep these meetings under the rug eventually see the morale go down the tubes.

Productive individuals have left former jobs when leaders did nothing with bullies or other difficult people.  They found jobs in organizations where leaders know the importance of direct communication and accountability.  How many of your star employees have left your company?  I hope that these strategies will stop this from happening in the future.

You will find links to the other videos that you may have missed at the end of the article.

How to stop bullies in the workplace intervention #1:  Informal Intervention

  • Talk to your bully over coffee or in your office.
  • Describe the disruptive behavior without sounding too critical.
  • The intention of this first meeting is to let the bully know that this behavior has to change.
  • If the bully gets defensive let him or her know that there are more professional ways to respond.
  • Discuss professional options.

How to stop bullies in the workplace intervention #2:  Awareness Intervention

  • Collect data about bullying behavior.
  • Discuss how the quality of work is being disrupted.
  • Most people will adjust his or her behavior during this meeting.
  • There could be a blind spot with this bully and no one ever called it to his or her attention.

How to stop bullies in the workplace intervention #3:  Authority Intervention

  • Leaders develop an evaluation plan with accountability built-in when behaviors persist.
  • Expectations need to be clear.
  • What behaviors need to be improved?
  • What actions will happen if the bully doesn’t change?
  • A timeline is presented.

How to stop bullies in the workplace intervention #4:  Disciplinary Intervention

  • Talk to human resources and share your data.
  • The bully has been warned several times.
  • He or she “shouldn’t” be surprised with the outcome due to the clear expectations and previous interventions.
