Does this sound familiar?
You have a very successful training. The trainer leaves and your team is back to the status quo and nothing has changed. If so this article is perfect for you. If not I can’t wait to find out what you do to keep the momentum going.
- Do you have an advocate for your projects at work?
- Would you like to find people who believe in what you do?
- Do you want to make a difference?
Last night I was at a wine tasting party at my daughter and son in law’s house.
I had a very interesting conversation about these questions with Phil who works in the health care industry. He works for a company who helps hospitals deal with conflict in the workplace concerning patient care. We were comparing what we do since we both are trainers who help others resolve conflict. He works as a trainer at a company and I’m an entrepreneur who owns my own company.
Phil shared that he finds ambassadors at his programs who will carry his message after he leaves the project. Many leaders hire Phil to work with their hospital for a short term project on improving relations between patients and Doctors. He came up with many statistics that show how training improves once Doctors learn simple yet necessary strategies. Results go off the charts when a Doctor puts his or her hand on a patient’s shoulder in a caring way. This one simple change improves patient relations at the facility! Patients tell Phil that they feel that the Doctor cares and listens better with this gentle and caring touch on the shoulder.
The challenge for any trainer either in the private or public sector is how to keep the momentum going when the training is over. Phil figured this out by finding an ambassador who checks in with him periodically to ask Phil questions. Even if top leaders don’t bring Phil’s company back to continue training on an on going basis at least his ideas are still in motion by having this important advocate keeping the conversation going with his or her team.
Joyce’s ideas on how to keep the momentum going after training sessions
I have an advantage since my conversations are very direct with leaders during the planning stages of any project. I ask them how the ideas will continue after the projects are complete with me. When I don’t hear a definite plan, I suggest several options.
- Bring me back for a follow up one month later to go deeper and tweak things that need to be changed
- Select an ambassador who will keep in touch with me to insure the company is moving ahead with the goals set in our sessions
- Work with individual leaders who need a few coaching sessions

So what about you?
- How do you insure that your training programs are not just a one shot session?
- Do you have advocates or ambassadors who are empowered to lead the team when trainers leave?
- Are you in touch with trainers once they have completed the projects to keep the momentum going?
Please let us know what you do so we can have an interesting dialogue with each other.
