Finally, Ideas That Actually Work for You to Gain Control of Your Day!

Hey, Kick Conflict to the Curb Weekly readers!

I sure hope that you are doing well and ready to say goodbye to 2020!

Do you want to hear how I finally got answers on how to gain control of my day and tasks?

I  recently attended an online conference with Amy Porterfield who is the Queen of Creating Digital Courses.  She invited her friend and thought leader, Michael Hyatt to share his wisdom with us.
His ideas blew me away and I started making changes in my life immediately.  The video below describes Hyatt’s Brilliance from his book, Free to Focus.

This short video tells my story and how you can start making changes to gain control of your day also.

https://vimeo.com/493126324

Gain Control of Your Day Idea #1: Create 3 Goals Each Day

Michael Hyatt suggests that we think of 3 goals to complete daily.  Write down these goals.  Once you complete these 3 tasks, you can now spend some quality time doing what you WANT to do.
For example, my 3 goals for today are to record 5 videos for LinkedIn and Facebook, work on Amy Porterfield’s module on creating powerful webinars, and write this blog.

Once I finished these 3 BIG goals, it was time to stop looking for another goal.  Instead, I wanted to read a book for an hour.  This is huge for me because I never stopped doing all the tasks on my plate and of course, there was never time to read what I wanted to read because there was ALWAYS something else to complete. I was on that treadmill and couldn’t get off. Does this sound familiar to you?

Gain Control of Your Day Idea #2:  Hire a Virtual Assistant

I’ve had people help with tasks in the past such as graphic designers, marketers, IT teams, etc. I never thought about giving the tasks that I don’t enjoy doing to a VA who loves this kind of work.
Huge stress has been lifted from me because I have time to spend doing what I want to do. This is not new for most of us. BUT it’s very hard to achieve until we find out that we do have choices.

How can You Gain Control of Your day?

What ideas are speaking to you from my video or message?  This is not rocket science.  It’s achievable once we find what works for us. It’s your turn. Please share your ideas in the comment section.
Are you saying, “Yes, Joyce this sounds great! I’m ready to finally gain control of my day and get off that never stopping treadmill?

A Motivational Poem to Boost Your Outlook on Life

Are you ready for a motivational poem to give you a boost in your outlook on life? A coaching client sent me Dr. Benjamin E. May’s poem – “Just a Minute.” Once I read “Just a Minute” I knew I would share it with my readers because it is such an important reminder for all of us!

I’ve only just a minute,
Only sixty seconds in it.
Forced upon me, can’t refuse it,
Didn’t see it, didn’t choose it,
But it’s up to me to use it.
I must suffer if I lose it,
Give an account if I abuse it,
Just a tiny little minute,
But eternity is in it.

motivational poemWho is Benjamin Elijah Mays?

Benjamin Elijah Mays was an American Baptist minister and civil rights leader who is credited with laying the intellectual foundations of the Civil Rights Movement. Mays taught and mentored many influential activists: Martin Luther King Jr, Julian Bond, Maynard Jackson, and Donn Clendenon, among others. 1894-1984.

More Thoughts from Joyce about this Motivational Poem

How much time do we waste? Too much. We all know people who get bent out of shape with the smallest stress – especially things that we can’t control.

Managing our time = managing our thoughts = managing our actions.

I’ve gone on many vacations when the weather is not picture perfect. Some people deal with it and still walk in the rain. Others complain about the weather for the entire trip! I was speaking in Alaska during the rainy season. Guess what? It rained! There were other trainers with me and some of them talked about the constant rain every minute! I wish I had a copy of “Just a Minute” with me to give to these downers!

I want to hear from you

Add a comment to my blog on how you manage your time. What expressions help you get through your stressful day? You will receive a response from me because I enjoy connecting with my readers! 🙂 You are always welcome to send me a private email with concerns that you are experiencing at work.

Please share this and any article that speaks to you or your company

Warning:  Use These 6 Tips to Gain Control at Your Own Risk

The Challenge:  How to gain control when the demands on your time seem to never ease up. We’re all struggling to make time for ourselves, maintain friendships, and keep the spark in our love lives. Gain control

How can you determine what you need to be happier and more productive?

The Solution:  Start with these 6 tips to achieve better balance in your life:

Tip One: Gain Control by Searching out a Flexible Employer

Job flexibility is the number one desired corporate benefit. If your company gives new meaning to the word rigid, you may need to look elsewhere – flexible employers do exist!

Pay attention to articles profiling companies that are particularly family-friendly or rated as the best place to work. These companies are a great place to start your job search.

Tip Two:  Gain Control by Asking and You Shall Receive (Maybe)

If you want a more flexible work arrangement, whether it’s flex time, job sharing, or a shorter workweek, try asking for it – but make sure you’ve done your homework.

For example, if you’re a really productive person, highlight this strength to your manager. Show her you’re worthy of this special consideration. Be prepared to give your boss the details of the new arrangement so he knows you’ve thought it through.

Tip Three: Gain Control by Forming a Work-life Balance Committee Gain control

Form a group to survey coworkers to determine their needs. Gently inform your leaders that creating a flexible environment will be a benefit to the company because their employees will be happier, more creative, and loyal.

Tip Four: Gain Control by Scheduling ‘ME’ Time

If it’s important to you to do a thirty-minute workout three times a week, mark it with permanent marker on your calendar.

There will always be some ‘more important’ work projects that compete for your time, but you need to realize that your personal commitments are just as valuable.  I enjoy looking at my health app at the end of the day to see how many steps I took.

Tip Five: Gain Control by Realizing a Temporary Lack of Balance is Acceptable

Sometimes, you may feel your life is out of balance. Sometimes it’s worth it, like when you go back to school or take the time to care for a child or parent.

If the benefit is bigger than the drawback, then accept it – because you have a new important, temporary priority. In time, you can shift back to a better balance with a new sense of accomplishment.

Tip Six: Gain Control by Recognizing the Signs of Burnout

When life remains out of balance for an extended period of time, you can suffer from burnout. Are you as tired when you wake up as you were when you went to bed? Do the little pleasures of life fail to satisfy you? Is your productivity waning?

Refresh yourself! It could be something as simple as taking a weekend vacation-or as major as changing careers. The first step is recognizing it, so you can put your life back in balance.  Many of my coaching clients discover that their job is actually killing them from all the stress.  They either have tough conversations with the boss or decide to look for another job.  Burnout is an obvious sign to take seriously.

Gain Control by Reaping the Rewards of a Balanced Life Today!

Determine what your personal and professional needs are and decide if your workplace is meeting them. If it’s not a match, then review the six tips and make the necessary changes. When all the puzzle pieces of life fit together, you will be a better friend, parent, employee, and person.

Life Coaching Strategies to Set Boundaries at Home and Work

Life coaching strategies are something that we can all use in our life – especially when it’s about setting boundaries to balance our hectic life.

Do you have colleagues or loved ones that use a lot of your time talking and talking while you are in the middle of something important?  If so, this article will give you some ideas on how to take charge of this stressful situation.

Do you have a tough time saying, “no” to others who ask you to volunteer since you are the “right person” to help them with a project?  If so, you will find out how easy it is to say, “no” without sounding aggressive.

Enjoy the life coaching strategies article and please let me know your boundary issues at work and home.  I will ask you to share these with me at the end of the article.

Life Coaching Strategies #1:  Learn the Power of Boundaries

You’re invited to be on the PTA!  You’re such a great baker; “We need your help with the bake sale!”
A co-worker needs your help with a work project!  You have no time and you don’t want to disappoint people who have such high regard for you.

It feels good when people ask us to do things we’re good at. Our egos are stroked. We like it when other people can count on us.  We also need to stop ourselves when people ask us to help them when our lives are out of whack!  Stop and remind yourself that it’s ok to take care of you or your family and not save the world 24 hours a day.

Life Coaching Strategies #2:  Remember Boundaries from Your Past

We had boundaries as kids such as – “Come home when the streetlights come on. No TV until your homework is completed.”

Too often, though, we don’t set them for ourselves as adults.

Think about recent commitments and make a list of duties you wish you had said, “no” to.  This can help you prepare a response for the next time.  Firmly enforce your boundaries. If you set boundaries and people still take advantage, it’s your fault for not taking care of your own time restrictions.

Remember, “You get what you tolerate.”

Life Coaching Strategies #3:  The Power of Family Boundaries

Shannon, a busy working mother, wanted to return to school to earn her degree. She knew the extra hours would life coaching strategiesaffect her family, so she called a family meeting.  She explained it was a two-year commitment.  Her kids would need to make their own lunches and life might be a little more stressful for a while.

The payoff was a better job for Shannon, allowing the family to have money for the vacation they wanted, or for her kids to attend college.  They agreed to her plan. To this day, when they complain, she reminds them about the family meeting.  This worked out for Shannon because she was focused and spoke about short-term stresses for her and the family.

Life Coaching Strategies #4:  The Power of Work Boundaries

Do you have a co-worker who stops by your desk, seeking help for her or his projects and leaving you with less time for your own?  Use ‘I’ language to deflect them.  For example, “I’m frustrated because I’d love to help you out.  I have a deadline on this project.” Or set a time limit:  “I can give you five minutes because I need to leave at 3:00 for my daughter’s soccer game.”

Life Coaching Strategies #5:  Friendship Boundaries

What about that friend whose number on your caller ID makes you Life coaching strategiesgroan?  These energy vampires are talkaholics, and it’s all about them and what they need.  You don’t have to pick up the phone. Or you can say up front, “I’m tied up this week; I’ll be glad to call you back or email you.”

Let’s Get Real

We encounter demands for our time and energy from many directions.  When those demands become too much, the continual stress can lead to an array of health problems.  Create and enforce boundaries to help manage your stress levels, and you will feel better about the commitments you make.

It can mean a longer, healthier, happier life.

Leaders, Are You A Work Life Balance Hero?

Work life balance is a frustration that I hear from all levels of an organization.  Are you a manager or owner who wants to help your team care for the seemingly easy tasks of home that still need to be managed either during or after work?

If so, this article will provide simple techniques you can use to help your employees feel less stressed at work.

Work Life Balance Frustrations

Home and personal lives do overlap our professional lives.  It is too difficult to separate the two.
Some typical comments that I hear in my workshops are the following:

If I work 110% I get good results.  If I work a little harder, I’ll get even more out of it.  I wonder why I’m always stressed. I told myself that once I did everything on my to do list…I will finally do what I really enjoy!

We will never enjoy the benefits of time affluence as long as success is defined who works the longest hours or sleeps the least.  I’ve seen burned out employees who don’t have the nerve to talk to their leaders.  They don’t want to sound like complainers.  I challenge them to plan the conversation so that their boss understands the unrealistic demands that they face daily.  Of course, leaders may face the same burn out or stress by their leaders!

What can managers do to help employees with their work life balance?

  • Include work life balance in the mission statement
  • Bring in on site grocery orders or cleaners to help save time for their team
  • Discuss possible solutions with the team on how goals can still be reached while changing the process
  • Hire professionals to speak on care giving or parenting
  • Be a good model and go home on time and strongly encourage your team to follow your lead
  • Bring in experts to help improve the working condition of the team

So Joyce, what else can you add on achieving work life balance?

It’s a pipe dream to think that we can achieve total work life balance.  BUT we can always make improvements to reduce our stress.  I recently heard an international panel discuss how they achieve balance.

  • Start with the end in mind such as taking care of myself and my family
  • Create ground rules such as exercising daily
  • Don’t talk about work at home
  • All devices are not allowed at the dinner table
These ideas work when you put them to use.  Mangers need to remind their team that improving balance will help them enjoy work more and improve productivity.  They need to have important conversations with their team in order to come up with solutions to burn out.
