How to Have a Tough Talk with Emerging Leaders who Ask for a Promotion When They are Not Ready

Emerging Leaders Story Background

As a career coach, I recently spoke to Beth – HR Director who is experiencing this dilemma with Bruce.  Bruce is a very capable manager who has much potential for growth.  She called me because she didn’t know how to handle this emerging leader.  She wanted to set him straight without stopping his desire to grow.

So Joyce, How did You Help Beth with her Emerging Leaders? 

We discussed that we all have blind spots and at times we don’t realize how others see us.  At times we think we are better than we really are and visa versa. Beth’s dilemma was that she needed to be direct and truthful while respecting his desire to grow.  Bruce thought he was ready to become a Director when Beth knew he needed to sharpen his communication skills.

Beth was thrilled that we spoke because we practiced what she would say to Bruce.

Bruce, I don’t want to curb your desire for career development.  I applaud you for this.
I do want to suggest taking a course on leadership to hone your communication skills. 
You have great potential.  Let’s discuss your next move in a few months after you take a few courses.

Bruce “got it.”  Beth did a great job and was direct while being honorable to his desire to grow.

I want to know how are you doing during these challenging times

Hi everyone.

I decided to write a brief message to check in with my loyal readers and to see how you are all doing.  This is a real test for all of us on how we cope with these changes.  Those of you who know me, know that I don’t hold back.  It’s been a challenge for me to listen to some people complain about canceling trips, hair appointments, and of course, meetings.  We all have to deal with this. All of us are inconvenienced and have to deal with things that are beyond our control!

I realize that we have different coping methods.  This is not a judgment on my side.  I am observing how others deal with stress and I must admit that it’s refreshing to see that most of us are doing a damn good job.  I do what I can to control myself when I hear others complain about how inconvenienced they are for the smallest things.

Hey, I coach others on how to understand their triggers and to control how they react.  We are all being tested right now, and are scared, frustrated, worried, etc.  We are not alone in this area.  I feel my role in life is helping others resolve their conflict.  We can’t resolve these things right now because of all the uncertainty.  BUT we can still do our best to appreciate our families, friends, coworkers, healthcare professionals and of course first responders.

Please share with me some of the complaints that drive you crazy from people who are acting selfish and NOT looking at the big picture – the health of our nation and the world.  This is the real deal.

This is what I’m doing to stay sane

  • I live in MI and walk as much as I can outside as long as it’s warmer than 32 degrees.
  • Organizing my office which has been a huge stress release for me.
  • I spend time on zoom meetings with coaching and speaking friends discussing ideas on how to help our clients during these times.
  • The one rule during these meetings is not to discuss the Corona Virus.  We all agree that these online meetings help energize us.
  • Last week my family including our kids and grandkids met online during a zoom meeting.  We laughed and just talked like we always do when we get together.
  • Preparing new recipes – some were great :).  This has been a very positive experience since my husband and I have more time to be creative in the kitchen.

I have 2 questions for you.  I encourage you to answer in the comment section or send me a private email.

  1. What are you doing to stay sane?

  2. What stories can you share about people who just don’t get how important it is for us to listen to the scientists and doctors?  I’m sure that you know others who complain about these inconveniences that we are all experiencing.

In a perfect world, I would love to speak to all of you on the phone to hear your answers.  Obviously I care about all of you and if you want to set up a time just to say, “hi” let’s schedule a phone call or send me an email HERE.  Hey, we are all home for a few weeks anyway.

I watch the news like most of you do to stay informed.  The challenge is that the news is full of very frightening statistics.  We must – I repeat, we must find time to take care of ourselves and loved ones right now more than ever.  We know that this too will pass.  Until it does, let’s stay connected.  I want to hear back from you.  Please let me know how you are doing.

Video 9: You May be Surprised Why I Became a Communication Strategist


Clients ask me how I became a communication strategist.  The answer may surprise you.

I was a late talker.  My relatives lived on the same block in Detroit MI.  They were very supportive and did what they could to understand my gibberish for years.  My father understood me when I said, “The goo took moo.”  In my language, it meant, “The girl took my mirror.”  Finally, I grew out of that stage and started talking a bit later than other kids in my family.  I was ready and look at me now.

We sure didn’t know that I was going to end up speaking for a living.  I started out as a keynote speaker and now I specialize in coaching emerging leaders, individuals, and small groups to kick conflict to the curb to get the respect they deserve.

People smile or laugh when I tell them that I was a late talker.  It has been an interesting ride for me.  I find it fascinating to research the latest information about communication challenges.  Clients appreciate that I share my stories with them about my own journey because it makes me approachable and real.  I think that these two qualities are not bad for a coach.  🙂

Here’s the lesson for today’s message 

Try to figure out your own path on why you do what you do today. Did you dream as a child that you would be in your present career?  What did you want to do when you grew up?  We all have stories to share during our speeches or in any communication.

Joyce Weiss’s Favorite Quote on Professional Growth

Sydney J. Harris’s quote speaks volumes about one of my favorite topics – professional and personal development.  There’s no secret that my passion for coaching is about as transparent as a person can be.  Years ago when I traveled with friends, they were reading romance novels and there I was on a beach delving into the newest self-help book.  Fast forward to today and you will find me on YouTube watching new techniques shared by numerous professional development gurus such as Tony Robbins.  I’m NOT judging anyone’s reading choices!  I’m giving you a glimpse into my interests.  🙂

Billions is an American television drama series starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis, that premiered on Showtime on January 17, 2016. The series is loosely based on the activities of the crusading federal prosecutor of financial crimes and his legal battles with hedge fund managers.  Wendy is the corporate spiritual advisor for the hedge fund company.  She uses effective coaching strategies that she learned from Tony Robbins on the team. I am mesmerized by her outcomes.  My coaching clients have been introduced to many of her technique and the results are impressive.

I feel that we are on a continuous journey to become the best who we can be and to change the world one person at a time.  I own this statement.  It’s so worthwhile to support others who believe in this philosophy.
