Life Coaching Strategies to Help Your Employees Reduce Stress

Are you a leader who wants to learn life coaching strategies?
Do you want to find answers on how to balance your life better?
Are you ready to change one small behavior to reduce stress?

If so, these 3 life coaching strategies will help you get some great results.

After working for the same software company for several years, a young professional moved 90 minutes away from the organization.  Instead of dealing with a grueling commute, she proposed that she could come into the office just one day a week, and work the rest of the time from home. The company leadership agreed.  The woman found a mutually agreeable solution that allowed her to achieve work-life balance.

Unfortunately, many employees in the same situation wouldn’t feel comfortable making such a request.  With so many companies doing more with less, employees need to achieve a better work-life balance… and you can help your organization do just that.

Life Coaching Strategies #1:  Find Out What Coworkers and Employees Need

life coaching strategies

Some workers might want a more flexible office schedule, a compressed workweek, job sharing options, or resources for child care or elder care. Others may want healthy workplace initiatives like on-site exercise classes and wellness lectures.

What can you do?

Create a work-life committee to survey people and find out their needs. Members can then recommend ways the organization might help employees achieve more balanced lives.

Life Coaching Strategies #2:  Relieving the Pressure of Overtime Demands

When demands become rigorous, everyone suffers.

What can you do?

Do something special for coworkers and employees – like providing a dessert, a dinner, or little thank you gestures. Suggest that dedicated people get an afternoon off… and everyone will be rewarded with a newly refreshed coworker.

Life Coaching Strategies #3:  Setting an Example

People who don’t take time for themselves feel more stressed, and consequently, become less productive at work.

What can you do?

Don’t begrudge people their personal time. Encourage others by modeling how important balance is in your life- when you leave at 5:00 p.m. to see your son’s soccer game, realize that you are an outstanding role model!

Concluding Thoughts about these 3 Life Coaching Strategies

Most of us are looking for ways to find more balance in our life.  I constantly look for life coaching strategies for my clients and myself! 🙂  We can lower our stress by changing only one behavior.  If you are a leader bring in speakers from a local health care facility to help your employees learn the newest strategies for lowering stress. There are many books, youtube videos, and classes on finding balance.  Cicero said, Where there is life, there is hope.

The challenge for all of us is finding a solution that fits our individual needs.  I will be sharing more articles and videos on finding balance and reducing stress because my loyal readers and clients keep on asking me to do so.

Leaders, Are You A Work Life Balance Hero?

Work life balance is a frustration that I hear from all levels of an organization.  Are you a manager or owner who wants to help your team care for the seemingly easy tasks of home that still need to be managed either during or after work?

If so, this article will provide simple techniques you can use to help your employees feel less stressed at work.

Work Life Balance Frustrations

Home and personal lives do overlap our professional lives.  It is too difficult to separate the two.
Some typical comments that I hear in my workshops are the following:

If I work 110% I get good results.  If I work a little harder, I’ll get even more out of it.  I wonder why I’m always stressed. I told myself that once I did everything on my to do list…I will finally do what I really enjoy!

We will never enjoy the benefits of time affluence as long as success is defined who works the longest hours or sleeps the least.  I’ve seen burned out employees who don’t have the nerve to talk to their leaders.  They don’t want to sound like complainers.  I challenge them to plan the conversation so that their boss understands the unrealistic demands that they face daily.  Of course, leaders may face the same burn out or stress by their leaders!

What can managers do to help employees with their work life balance?

  • Include work life balance in the mission statement
  • Bring in on site grocery orders or cleaners to help save time for their team
  • Discuss possible solutions with the team on how goals can still be reached while changing the process
  • Hire professionals to speak on care giving or parenting
  • Be a good model and go home on time and strongly encourage your team to follow your lead
  • Bring in experts to help improve the working condition of the team

So Joyce, what else can you add on achieving work life balance?

It’s a pipe dream to think that we can achieve total work life balance.  BUT we can always make improvements to reduce our stress.  I recently heard an international panel discuss how they achieve balance.

  • Start with the end in mind such as taking care of myself and my family
  • Create ground rules such as exercising daily
  • Don’t talk about work at home
  • All devices are not allowed at the dinner table
These ideas work when you put them to use.  Mangers need to remind their team that improving balance will help them enjoy work more and improve productivity.  They need to have important conversations with their team in order to come up with solutions to burn out.

A Personal Goal of Mine

A personal goal of mine is work life balance.  A mantra that I share with my clients is “Making time for yourself is not a luxury…it’s a necessity.”

I live by this motto and share it anytime I can with my clients.  Most people tell me that they know how to give their time at home and work but don’t know how to take time for themselves.  I am seeing this pattern more and more and this is why client’s still bring me in to present my program, Take the Ride of Your Life;  Shift Gears for More Balance, Growth and Joy.  The next few blog posts will contain stories and strategies that I share during the program.

Personal Goal Strategy 1:  A new definition of being out of control

Everyone is busy these days.  They are time deprived and I created a new word:  Busy-Aholics. The new work reality is that everyone is busy.  The trap is that being busy can add up to lot’s of activity that isn’t that productive.

Here’s an action step for you:  Listen to how you describe your day to others.  Are you describing all of your meetings that you had during the day?  We create a lot of internal stress for ourselves when we repeatedly listen to our hectic schedules.

Personal Goal Strategy 2:  Set personal boundaries

We had boundaries when we were children (come home at a certain time, ride your bike ONLY on the sidewalk (this is if you lived in a city with sidewalks 🙂 ).  A funny thing happens when we grow up.  We forget to set personal boundaries for ourselves.  If you don’t take care of yourself…who will?  Remember, Taking time for yourself is NOT a luxury…it’s a necessity.  Make sure YOU are part of the balance equation.

Here’s an action step for you:  Set one personal goal and boundary for yourself that you can use both at work and home.  Feel free to send your action step to me and I will respond as an accountability coach.

I will share stress and humor strategies in the next couple of blogs.

How to Overcome Overwhelmed: A Video by Terry Brock

conflict frustrated lady putting paper to her headI’m thrilled to share a video about How to Overcome Overwhelmed by my colleague and friend, Terry Brock.  He was honored to speak during a Tedx event organized by a local community. Terry’s approach to his topics are down to earth, entertaining, and easy to grasp.

Who is Terry Brock?
Terry is a marketing and communication expert who shares ideas on how to use technology to build business relationships. He helps individuals and organizations realize potential they didn’t know existed.

Terry Brock is a columnist for Business Journals (43 papers across America), a blogger, and a marketing coach. He has worked with clients like AT&T as Editor in Chief for their award-winning industry blog and with Skype as their Chief Enterprise Blogger.

Here is Terry’s message in the video that you will find below
1.  You are in control
2.  Have the right technology and use it to learn and connect with others
3.  Move your thinking from “No Way” to “Not Yet!”

View Terry Brock’s video HERE

So Joyce, what do you think?

Terry’s message says it all.  Once we learn that we are in control things calm down.  We tend to blame others or the circumstances. Asking ourselves…why not?…helps us stop the blame game and look for action and solutions.  Technology is overwhelming for some people.  They try to learn too many new things at once and they end of giving up the process.  Once we learn how to change “No Way” to “Not Yet” we gain control and give ourselves time to learn new and exciting technologies.  Prioritizing which new strategies to learn also helps.  I’m still exploring all the benefits of using LinkedIn.  I have taken classes, read books and it’s exciting to decide which aspects I want to explore…not everything…just the ones that fit for now.

What About You?

  • What parts of Terry’s message speak to you?
  • When did you change something so you overcame overwhelmed?
