Forgiveness: Free Yourself from the Chains of the Past

  • Are you ready to discover how forgiveness can make you feel better about yourself?
  • Do you want to feel in control?

Powerhouse Sejal Thakker, Chief Civility Officer, was a recent guest on my live broadcast, Kick Conflict to the Curb™.  The theme: “How to identify our own hidden biases.” Sajel also discussed her first TEDx Talk about not feeling included: “The Pain, Power, and Paradox.”

We had a passionate and important discussion about forgiveness:

  • Releasing stress
  • Building relationships with others
  • Knowing how to forgive by starting with yourself
  • Discovering how to stop blaming others

Grab the chance to hear Sejal Thakker’s brilliance on the video link below.

The clip is only 2:07 minutes and is worth watching.

Please share your thoughts after you watch the video.

Joyce’s Thoughts About Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a choice that we make for ourselves, not for the person who has wronged us. It doesn’t mean that we forget the harm that was done.

If you struggle with forgiveness, remember it’s not just about letting go of the past. It’s also about living a life filled with peace and freedom.

One Strong Tip for Leaders to Stop Bullying at Work

This one tip will help your leaders know how to stop bullying in their workplace. There are some leaders who don’t know where to start. They know that something needs to change, but how?

This blog shows you how to start the process with a tested strategy. Many of my clients implemented the process with lots of success. As long as they took this seriously, and made immediate changes to stop bullying.

You will find the previous links to articles in this series on “How to Handle Bullies” towards the end of the article.

Create a Code of Conduct to Stop Bullying stop bullying

  • The code is created by employees and leadership
  • Using an unbiased facilitator to conduct these meetings ensures that everyone voices their opinions
  • Describe professional and unacceptable behavior
  • Conduct regular surveys and focus groups to measure progress
  • Follow-up, analyze, and respond to the data

Provide Training and Coaching for Leaders to Stop Bullying

  • Define a framework for addressing disruptive behavior
  • Provide communication coaching for leaders to address the bully’s disruptive behavior

Thoughts from Joyce

Many of my clients are leaders and human resource professionals who need support on how to stop bullying and negative behavior.

They transform from not knowing how to address this to feel confident using their voice. Additionally, they start training their employees on how to resolve their conversations with difficult relationships.

This is the key. Training and coaching the entire company to stand up for themselves in a positive way. This is a win-win for everyone. Direct reports stop complaining to human resources or leaders. They use strategies learned during coaching sessions and put them to use immediately.

Clients find the Conflict Dynamic Assessment is an eye-opener to them. This is a great way to start finding blind spots, personal triggers, and how they react during the conflict.

Don’t take my word on this. Here’s a testimonial from a coaching client that wanted to sing my praises.

Why Bullying Happens in the Workforce

I’m asked why bullying happens in the workforce more so these days. And, the better question to ask is why leaders allow bullying.

This is part 3 in the series – How to Handle Bullies at Work.
Additionally, you’ll find the first two article links at the bottom of this post.

Why Bullying Happens

  1. Bullies are not punished and thrive when there is no established rule.
  2. No one in the company has the will to stop bullying.

Also, these are 2 reasons why star employees jump ship. They are sick and tired of these dangerous people allowed to get away with their violent behavior.

Bullying is Under-Reported BULLYING

  • 40% of targets never tell their employers
  • Bullying is erroneously branded as conflict or difference in personality styles
  • Complaints lead to retaliation
  • Targets figure it’s easier not to report bullies to leadership

All these reasons lead to “the great resignation.” Coaching clients tell me that they leave because they found new positions at a company that values anti-bullying cultures. As a result, this hurts because many times they find new positions in a competing organization. Ouch!

The links below take you directly to the first two articles in the series; “How to Handle Bullies at Work.”

2 Small but Powerful Tips to Handle Workplace Bullies

Your attitude affects how you handle workplace bullies.

Welcome to the series “Protecting Yourself from Bullies in the Workplace.”
This week’s post describes how to change our attitude to feel more confident.  I know this is nothing new!  It’s all about attitude!

The better we feel about ourselves, the fewer times we have to knock someone down to feel tall!

Odetta, American Singer and Actor

I would like to give bullies Odetta’s quote – wouldn’t you?

Tip #1:  Your Attitude Affects How You Handle Workplace Bullies handle workplace bullies

Brad, my coaching client, practiced how to make conversations safe with me before he had the tough conversation with his bully.

Brad’s bully listened to him after the interaction.  This bully was not aware that his words hurt others.  No one had the nerve to speak with him.  Brad did, and the bully now has respect for him.

Instead of saying, “Why do you like insulting our team members?”  Brad changed this to, “Let’s discuss how we can communicate better with everyone on our team.”  The bully was included in the conversation. Everyone felt safe and discussed solid solutions.  A win/win was the result.

Tip #2:  Create a Plan to Handle Workplace Bullies

What can you do?

  • Stop complaining about the bully to others who can’t help you
  • Create a plan on how to start the conversation
  • Go to leadership or Human Resources
  • Practice the communication skills that you learned in past blog posts. You can also search for videos on my YouTube playlists HERE

Here’s a disclaimer!  It’s always a risk to have tough conversations.  At least you tried!  You didn’t stand still and take this difficult person’s constant sarcasm or criticism.
