Video # 5: Danger! Make Sure that Your 1st Words Aren’t Boring

#VideosonAudienceEngagement #CommunicationStrategist #PublicSpeakingTraining

Do you ever wonder why certain speakers and trainers engage the audience immediately?
Do you want to learn how to engage your audience?

Welcome to my video series:  Secrets from a trainer to engage your audience.  This is video #5:  Danger:  Make sure your 1st words are not boring.  You will find 4 tips to help you engage your audience below.  Please let me know which tip “speaks” to you.

How to engage your audience Tip #1

Don’t – I repeat don’t say anything boring when you begin your program such as:

  • I’m thrilled to be speaking to you today.
  • Thanks for being here.
Everyone says comments like these and the audience could tune you out immediately and start looking at their phones.
You can definitely thank the audience for being so engaged, just not at the beginning.

How to engage your audience tip #2

Start off with a great quote or funny experience that you had while driving or flying to the program.  Your own personal stories are great to use.

How to engage your audience tip #3

Give kudos to the audience or to your introducer later on in your program.

How to engage your audience tip #4

  • Start paying attention to your favorite news anchors
  • Watch how they set up their segment
  • Listen to other trainers and speakers
  • Take notes on what works and doesn’t work

A Favorite Motivational Quote on the Importance of Humor

#favoritemotivationalquote #Seneca #theimportanceofhumor

You will see a few more of my favorite motivational quotes on the importance of humor in future blog posts.

Humor is in my DNA.  The topics that I speak on are serious – bullying, conflict, communication issues, and career challenges.  I learned the importance of humor during a class on death and dying when I was working on my counseling degree at Oakland University in MI.
I will share a great story on this in a future post.

The moment I share something funny that happened during a stressful time in my life is the moment when people really connect with me.  I guess this is an important quality to have as a career coach and communication strategist! 😉

Communication Strategies #1:  Using large emojis humor | communication strategies

I bought the props that are in this blog from Amazon.  The emojis are perfect for my message when I open up the training on dealing with bullies and other difficult people.  The audience smiles the moment I put them in front of my face.

Communication Strategies #2:  Using big ears

The ears will be such a success when you speak about listening and communication.  I put them on and the audience is always interested in humor | communication strategistwhere they can purchase them.  I hope that they are also listening to my message! 🙂

Video #3 in the Series: Secrets from a Trainer to Engage Your Audience

#CommunicationStrategies #Publicspeaking #CommunicationStrategist

Welcome to video #3 in the series: “Secrets from a trainer to engage your audience.” Communication strategies are important topics for my loyal readers and I do my best to address valuable ideas to fit their needs! 🙂 This week’s topic is how to use humor to win over your audience.  Full disclosure here:  I’m NOT a humorist.  I do take serious topics and make them fun for clients.  You will learn my secret on how to help your audience crack a smile or even laugh after you watch this video.

The links to the first 2 secrets are below:

Here’s the link for Video #1 in the series:  Get to the Room Early

Here’s the link for Video #2:  Sit with the Audience

Communication Strategies #1:  Make sure and watch the first 2 videos

You will feel more comfortable presenting and let your natural humor appear once you greet each audience member and sit with the audience before your presentation. These 2 communication strategies help my clients relax.  Let’s face it, they can now stop being so focused on doing a good job and let go of their stress by speaking with their audience.

This is stress release at it’s best!  I know first hand on wanting to make that perfect training session.  I find myself less stressed when I do this one strategy and so do my clients.  I can concentrate on what others say and stop listening to that little voice in my head about perfection!

Communication #2:  Write down humorous comments during the meal.

Once you start speaking to your tablemates and really listen to their experience, you will have some humorous stories to use during your communication strategiespresentation.  Believe me, the funny gems are there if you only look.

Ask your participants if they are willing to share their stories or if you can use their idea without mentioning their names.  Give them a copy of your book or some small token of appreciation if you use their brilliance.

Stay tuned for more ideas on how to improve your presentations.  All of these ideas can be used in a small workshop or even a large keynote.

Video #2 in the Series: Secrets from a Trainer to Engage Your Audience

#publicspeakingtips #communicationstrategist #communicationstrategies

Do you want to know how to build rapport with your audience either as a workshop presenter or speaker?  This video is the 2nd in the series: “ Proven Secrets from a Trainer to Engage your Audience Immediately.”  Tip #2 is to sit with the audience before your presentation and not other speakers.  Communication strategies are important topics for my loyal readers and I do my best to address valuable ideas to fit their needs! 🙂

You will find secret #1:  Get to the room early HERE

Communication Strategies #1:  Make a Decision Where you Want to Sit

Let the meeting planner know that you want to sit with the audience for lunch or dinner and not with the other speakers.  Some of you may decide that it’s better to sit at the speaker’s table and that’s fine! This strategy is a secret sauce for me and my clients.  Building relationships is the key to successful communication.

Communication Strategies #2:  Listen to the Conversation at the Lunch/Dinner Table Carefully

This strategy works for me because I get a chance to win over a table by asking them questions about themselves, their job, their frustrations communication strategiesor goals.  Listening to your tablemates is a 90% guarantee that they will listen to you more when you go on stage.

I can be bold and tell you that this strategy will improve your rapport.

Stay tuned for more ideas on how to improve your presentations.  All of these ideas can be used in a small workshop or even a large keynote.
