How Your Company Can Create A Positive Culture Video

  • Are you ready to watch a video on how to create a positive culture?
  • Would you like to discover how two Human Resource Generalists take their jobs very seriously while taking care of themselves?

I had the privilege of interviewing Candice Rice and Lauren Melton who are HR Generalists at Schaedler Yesco Distribution.

The video below has several easy tips that you can use at work and home.

I’m compiling all the information from the interviews and you will see a  white paper in the future.

The rest of this article covers the main questions that I asked Candice and Lauren. Hope you enjoy your time with them as much as I did!

You Both Work in a Positive Culture – Tell us Morepositive culture

  • The company value’s us.
  • Leaders want us to have a home life.
  • Managers trust their employees to do their job.
  • Our motto is, “Work hard Go home Happy.”
  • It makes a difference when leaders value employees’ homelife.

What Stresses and Challenges do You Experience as HR Generalists?

  • Recruiting is a challenge.
  • Change is constant. And, we need to understand all points of view since there are always so many changes.
  • Some people get stressed out with change.
  • We need to know how to communicate to ensure that employees adapt to these changes.

How do you deal with Gossip Since You Have Such a Positive Culture?

  • Employees come to us with complaints about another person.
  • We ask them to go back to the person and find out the entire story.
  • Managers do step in if necessary.
  • We listen to the complaints and ask them to attempt to figure them out before they come to us.

What are Challenges That New Hires Bring Up to You?

  • Our company hires people who will fit in the culture.
  • New hires have a 30 day and 60-day follow-up.
  • We listen to them when they come to us or their manager to discuss their issues.
  • They tell us how they feel heard and we work hard to continue this open communication.

What Have You Learned When You Didn’t Work in a Positive Culture?

  • I left my previous jobs because management didn’t care about the team. I knew that I need to work in a non-toxic environment. That was #1 when I search for a new job.
  • I was thrown to the wolves. The team never asked questions because leadership didn’t care about us.
  • I learned how NOT to throw others to the wolves. This was a valuable lesson – even though it was a horrendous experience at the time.
  • HR is all about dealing with different personalities.

What  Questions Would You Have for Me if We Met for a Cup of Coffee?

  • How to deal with conflict resolution with family members – Without taking a risk and having people still talk to you.positive culture
  • There are individuals who have been here for a long time and they don’t like change.
  • There is pushback. Such as, why do we have to change things.
  • How can we help them adapt to these changes?

Joyce’s coaching moment:

  • Uncover the discomfort first.
  • Is it the lack of experience?
  • Are they concerned that they have the skills for this new endeavor?
  • Ask them to describe their main concern.
  • Use baby steps.

What topics would you like me to address in future videos?

  • How to speak to your boss when you have a conflict.
  • What to do internally before I open my mouth?

What advice would you tell a new HR Generalist?

  • You are here for the company and the people.
  • Our internal customers have different personalities.
  • And no matter what the issue is, figure out how to resolve it on your own first.
  • If you need support we are here for you.
  • Make sure that you have a good balance and go home and live your life.
  • There will always be conflict. Be ready for it.
  • You took all the classes in college. It’s difficult in the beginning. I didn’t realize how much HR does until I started working.
  • Don’t be afraid of challenges because they will make you grow.

Easy Ideas to Increase Morale

Do you want to increase morale?
Isn’t it time to break up some of the sameness of the week?
The workplace doesn’t have to be dull!
Sprinkle in some new events and see how the anticipation plus execution pays off in dividends!

Employee engagement helps keep star employees from leaving your workplace.
Ask your team for THEIR ideas on how to create a more energetic environment.

If STRESS is KING – that must be dealt with first to help employees perform in a positive atmosphere. Getting to the root cause is important and it does take time.  It is worth the effort.

Ideas to Increase Morale Strategy #1 increase morale

The following are ideas that my clients use to help place smiles back on their employees:

  • Theme days (Elvis, clashing outfits)
  • Talent contests
  • Employee baby pictures bulletin boards
  • Free time to exercise or walk outside
  • Dress down days
  • Give standing ovations to team members
  • Meet a team member at the airport

Ideas to Increase Morale Strategy #2increase morale

The following ideas will work if your teams share the same responsibilities:

  • Change partners every 5 days
  • Create peer team feedback sessions once per month
  • Empower teams to resolve conflict on their own before contacting management

Let’s Get Real

I can just hear some of you thinking – This will never work at my company.  Why not?
Start with small steps.  Reread some of my past posts on how other clients engage their employees to increase morale.

Let me know what you do to engage your employees to bring joy at work.

When I started my career over 30 years ago leaders told me not to have their employees laugh during my training.  Leaders only wanted serious training to increase productivity.  They wanted me to lecture and share strategies.  Those of you who know my personality realize that humor is part of my life and every training and coaching project.  Laughter and getting energy from each other makes a great training session rock!

What do You do to Engage Employees?

What do you do to engage employees?
What do you do immediately to engage new employees?  These are two questions that I will be asking participants for my next Team Building Training.  Someone in the audience usually gives a sarcastic answer – keep negative team members away from new hires so they are not influenced by these toxic people.  There’s a lot of truth to this statement!

The ideas below were given to me by a group of HR professionals.  I look forward to hearing what you do to engage employees.

Engage Employees Strategy #1:  Make Them Feel Welcome Immediately engaged employees

  • Organize a staff lunch on the first day to greet new team members
  • Ask the team to describe how departments interact with each other
  • Meet with the new hires to assess their training goals and needs

Engage Employees Strategy #2:  Remove New Job Jitters

  • Provide a mentor for the new hire to job shadow
  • Invite new employees to attend meetings in all departments to make their roles clear
  • New employees will meet with mentors daily for at least a week to answer questions
  • Communicate clear written expectations and consequences to remove confusion

Let’s get Real on How to Engage Employees!team building lessons, engaged employees

I realize that some of you may be thinking that your company doesn’t have the time to do all of the strategies above to engage employees.  All I ask is for you to take a look at your turnover.  If it’s low you are probably using some of these ideas.  If the revolving door syndrome is apparent, it may be time to implement these techniques.  Remember – these are being used in the best and brightest place to work to engage employees.
