Team Building Lessons Learned on a Trip to AU and NZ

I recently went on a three-week trip to Australia and New Zealand.  Besides feeding kangaroos, snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, learning about the indigenous Aboriginals and Maoris-we were all amazed at how 16 strangers melded into a tight oiled team on the first day of the trip.  I told the group that I was going to write about them in a future blog.  Even our tour guide told us that he never led a group that traveled so well together before he met us.

The rest of this article covers five team building lessons.  We didn’t sit down with each other to discuss rules of successful teams.  It happened naturally.  We all felt very fortunate.  Most of the group shared horror stories when they traveled with strangers on previous tours which included bullies, talkaholics, complainers and of course braggarts!

Team Building Lessons #1:  No Complaining team building lessons

We received wake up calls at 4:30 am to go on tours.  No one complained.  We joked about needing a gallon of coffee and kept on saying, “It is what it is.”  We all understood that one of the reasons why we selected Odyssey Unlimited was due to the numerous experiences they included for us.  We had to get up bright and early to enjoy meeting aborigines, arriving on time to see the sunrise at Uluru Rock, or beating the crowds on a scenic tour through the fjords in New Zealand.

Team Building Lessons #2:  The Importance of Laughing team building lessons

The laughter started immediately at the airport when some of us met each other for the first time.  I was stretching my legs after the 14+ hour flight.  Someone said, “Let’s call Joyce Stretch since she likes to be limber.”  Everyone started to laugh-including me and that’s how we got to know each other.  Sarcasm was not part of the group.  We all liked to laugh at ourselves which took down barriers immediately.

Team Building Lessons #3:  Show Interest in Others

I looked forward to our meals together because everyone was interested in finding out about each other.  We discussed our jobs, families, and hobbies.  It was fascinating for me to watch the magic happening.  No one talked over another person.  We actually cared about each other which was apparent on the first day.  We also shared our enthusiasm for all of our experiences-especially when we visited Mt Cook in the Southern Alps and our rooms faced the majestic mountains.

Team Building Lessons #4:  Support Each Other

We shared medical supplies and advice when team members got injured or sick.  One of the travelers received sad news about a relative at home.  We all helped her by listening and supplying our phones so she could speak with her family.  We didn’t have to think about this.  We were there for her.

Team Building Lessons #5:  Trust Your Leader

We all appreciated Warren, our tour guide who knew how to control our vivacious and strong team.  There were times that we wanted to do something different from the planned tour.  He made a few changes and listened to us as much as he could since he had to answer to his boss.  Warren had a sense of humor that was contagious.  We started to answer each other’s questions as though we were Warren!  Now, that’s quite a role model.  🙂

Team Building Lessons Learned by Joyce

Even though the trip ended, the team spirit continues.  We are still in touch via email and some of us will be visiting each other as a result of strong friendships that were formed.  I continue driving Warren crazy with my constant questions about the culture.  He is going way beyond his job responsibilities and is reaching out to an expert on aboriginal art to find out the meaning of a couple of my purchases.

The group is sharing photos and family updates.

This team was so easy to form.  I asked myself why the group of 16 was different from others that I experienced.  The stars were lined up.  The personalities worked.  We were all there for one reason to share an incredible experience with each other.

We can all learn from working with naturally cohesive teams.  Ask yourself why that team worked as well as it did.  Of course we all experience groups of people who just can’t seem to work well together.  This is the time when we have to discuss what needs to be done to make the team work together. Ignoring a weak group won’t help.  We all need to pitch in to make positive change.

Discuss the following lessons covered in this article:

  • Handling complaints so they don’t become the norm
  • Laughing and the importance of a sense of humor and not sarcasm
  • Showing authentic interest in each other by making time to get to know team members
  • Supporting team members during both good and bad times
  • Trusting leaders is a necessity-this is a 2-way street

PS.  My hope is that this year you will have tough conversations when necessary so that you can improve your relationships and feel less stressed.  My favorite quote by Martin Luther King Jr is “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Who do you need to speak with either at home or work?  Remember that it’s always a risk to have these important conversations.  By now you know that I think it is worth the risk!

You Get What YOU tolerate.  🙂

See you next week

Communication Strategies for Successful Leaders

I have 3 questions to see if you or your leaders use communication strategies at work.

  1. Does your team feel safe to have open communication with each other?
  2. Do your employees feel heard?
  3. Is there trust at work?

I would love to be a fly on the wall and listen to your responses!  Obviously, some of you answered “yes” to all 3 questions.  What about those of you who are rolling your eyes right now and wondering how to deal with the passive aggressive or closed down attitude at work?

This article gives 3 powerful communication strategies that my clients successfully use to create trust and open communication.  They all work once leadership knows that everyone has to become involved.

Powerful Communication Strategies #1:  Collaboration Versus a Win/Lose Environment

Leaders need to figure out how to give people permission to build trust.  Use the following ideas:

  • Ask for everyone’s ideas
  • Discuss what needs to stop, continue, and change
  • Invite small groups or individuals to eat breakfast with the boss

Strategic Communication Strategies #2:  Encourage Positive Conflict

You read this right!  Conflict is positive when results are part of the equation.  Conflict becomes constructive collaboration when used correctly.  Remember a time at work or even at home when relationships became stronger after a successful communication.  I know you may be thinking of times when relationships became weakened after a certain confrontation.  The idea is to figure out what worked when things were improved and what didn’t work when the communication failed.

Check out my article on Got Personality Issues at Work?  This short yet powerful post contains many ideas you can use with colleagues who drive you crazy or a team that is experiencing a lot of drama.

Strategic Communication Strategies #3:  Understand That Everyone Deals with Conflict Differently

This is a hard one to handle at times.  We think to ourselves – “Why does she react this way?”  or “I wish he wasn’t so sensitive.”  Our behavioral styles make us unique.  The good news is that we react better with people who have the same behavioral style as we do.  The bad news is that conflict is worsened when we communicate with people who have different behavioral styles. Look for a future article on this important topic.

So Joyce, What Do You Think?

I have a very important question to ask.  How skilled are your people in having tough conversations in a RESPECTFUL way – to make sure they feel heard?  If you look at my logo, it contains 3 words:  Respect-Resolve-Results.  Not feeling heard is one of the largest reasons why people leave their company.  Once leaders understand and use these 3 communication strategies they will see a difference in the morale of their company.

I want to hear from you!

CLICK HERE to send me your questions about how your leaders make people feel heard.  What is your experience with how lack of trust and openness create conflict at work?  Do you have any tips how to initiate a conversation with a leader who you want to share your ideas? What’s the most uncomfortable conversation you’ve had with a leader?

Have you read any good business books lately? I’d love to hear about them.

Until next time,

Career Development Strategies for Leaders Video

Are you a leader who wants to open up the lines of communication with your team?
If so you are in the right place!  Part of career development as a leader is to continually work on communication strategies. Part of career development as a leader is to continually work on communication strategies. First watch the short video below.  The leadership strategies follow the video.

Recap of the Video

I was traveling to Canada from Michigan with my friends.  My neighbor Mike was driving and the border guard asked him where he lived.  Mike said, “The United States.”  The guard asked in a very sarcastic way, “That’s a big place…where do you live?”  Mike said, “Michigan.”  Again the guard asked in a very condescending way, “That’s also a big place.”  This time, Mike answered, “West Bloomfield MI.” The guard let us through without asking any more questions.  We laughed the entire weekend about this communication faux pax.

The guard was correct in asking these important questions.  He didn’t have to be such a bully.

The same thing happens in our conversations.  We may express the best message and ask the greatest questions.  It’s how we say things that matter.

Hope you enjoy this short article on Career Development Strategies for Leaders.

Career Development Strategy #1

Tell your team that you are proud of them.  Many of my clients don’t realize how powerful their words can be with their team.  Make sure that you share how your team’s skills add to the success of the company.  This one strategy will go a LONG way especially when you are authentic and share details on their strengths.  Part of a strong leader is recognizing the strengths of others and helping them continually grow.

Career Development Strategy #2

Ask for their opinions.  Many of my clients tell me that when they start asking direct reports to share ideas on a new process, the lines of communication opens up.  Of course, you need to be willing to really listen and take their opinions seriously.

Career Development Strategy #3

Ask your team what they like and dislike about their jobs.  Turnover will be reduced when you keep your star employees from leaving.  Many times they have legitimate complaints.  They find new positions in another company because they are listened to by their new boss.  If you can’t deliver their requests, let them know why and make them feel listened to by asking them what you need to do keep them from leaving.  A client of mine recently saved a star employee from leaving by asking him what he needed that he was not getting from his current job.  The employee told his boss that he has been bored and feels his career development has been squelched.  The boss took him very seriously and enrolled the employee in an online course on leadership.  All is well!

Career Development Strategy #4

Ask what you need to do to make their work easier and what the company needs to do to create new processes.  This is an extension of strategy #3.  Leaders who accept total responsibility for the morale of their team have a better success rate.  A client of mine enjoyed her employment except when her ideas were discounted during meetings.  I helped her with a strategy to express this concern to her boss.  Miracles happened.  He heard her frustration and did not realize that he discounted her.  The responsibility is on the employee who allowed her boss to continually reject her ideas for many years.  She was on her way to look for a new position until she practiced what she would say to her boss.  She is getting stronger and is being listened to!  Remember, “You Get What YOU Tolerate!”
