Strategies to Produce Engaging Virtual Meetings

Do you want to learn powerful strategies to make sure you are conducting engaging virtual meetings?
Are you engaging your team during zoom meetings?

Espeakers just awarded me the Certified Virtual Presenter Certification.  This is a BIG deal because the evaluator made sure that I am skilled to be a successful virtual trainer.

The certification test covers the following required questions:
  1. Does the speaker have any camera or microphone issues not worked out in the first 60 seconds?
  2. Is the video background free from distractions and professional in appearance? It is okay to be in a home as long as it looks professional.
  3. Is the presenter’s face the dominant feature on the screen and easily seen against the background?
  4. Is the presenter’s face well-lit and easy to see?
  5. Is the speaker audible and easy to understand?
  6. Are there background distractions such as crying, washing machines, construction sounds etc.?
  7. In simulating a network break recovery, did the presenter quit the meeting session and reconnect in 60 seconds?
  8. Was the speaker’s broadcast computer connected to the internet through a wired or wireless connection?

To receive a virtual certification badge, all required tests must be passed.
The following optional items are self-reported:
  1. Good use of visual aids.
  2. Improved mic usage such as a lav, headset, or other dedicated mics.
  3. Tested daytime lighting.
  4. Well lit room for night time testing.
  5. Usage of audience Q&A or chat during the presentation.
  6. Usage of polls and questions during the presentation.
  7. Breakout rooms usage.
  8. Backup internet access.

Engaging Virtual Meetings Strategy #1:  No More Boring Openings

Forget all the niceties in the beginning.  You can thank participants or a team later on.  The first words out of the trainer’s mouth need to be funny, powerful, or supportive.

I show my clients ways to open the virtual meeting with easy tips below:

  • Customized word searches
  • Humorous cartoons to get a smile out of participants
  • Polls are great to use to make participants feel like part of the group immediately

Engaging Virtual Meetings Strategy #2:  Use Relevant Energizers

Clients appreciate the energizers that I use during training because they laugh, smile, take a break from the content, and feel more energized after the short exercises.  Here are a few winners to start you out:

  • Controlled stretch breaks:  Ask participants to stand up (if they can) when they think of an answer to your question
  • Ask them to write an answer to a question on a piece of paper.  This also gives time to reflect.
  • “Coaching HOT seats:  Ask for a volunteer who is willing to take the hot seat and share an issue that they want to have resolved.

PPS  Read a testimonial from my most recent client who asked me to coach her sales team on virtual engaging sales calls:

Joyce recently trained our leadership team on how to run more engaging meetings with our sales team. In the past, we did a lot of talking to our sales team members and it was obvious they were not leaving the meeting super energized or even retaining what we taught them.

Immediately after our training with Joyce, we implemented a few tactics such as ‘revisiting’ what we wanted the team to know, rather than ‘retraining’ them. When you revisit the content, it sticks because the team has to internalize what they just learned. Another example is we started using breakout rooms in Zoom for the team to practice new techniques in a safe place and then we shared out what we learned in the larger gr

After Joyce’s training, our leadership team has the tools we need to create high-impact meetings. These techniques will also carry over to our sales team meetings with their customers! As you can see, I highly recommend working with Joyce Weiss!
