Video 7: Become a Better Communicator by Using Training Evaluations

  • Would you like to know my secrets on how to become a better communicator by using training evaluations?
  • Do you only concentrate on the negative feedback from your speech evaluations?

I know first hand how it is when we get negative evaluations.  We have to train ourselves to learn from the feedback.  Some of my clients take it personally.  After working with me as their communication coach, they understand that this feedback could uncover their blind spots.  This video will support your efforts and self-esteem.

Tip #1 to Become a Better Communicator

We have to remember that some people who fill out evaluations may not know the importance of constructive feedback.
I’ve received many comments that have helped me over the years and I appreciate the comments.
Then there are those comments that are not constructive and only critical evaluations that are mean spirited.

  • I was told that I was too short.  My height is something I can’t change and I still laugh at this today.
  • An audience participant told me that my outfit was too colorful.  My blouse was light pink.
  • I saw someone fill out the evaluation before I even opened my mouth!

Tip #2 to Become a Better Communicator

The real lesson is to enjoy the positive feedback and learn from the constructive feedback that is valid.  I remember one of my first training sessions when someone told me that my outfit was too noisy for them.  They were right.  I wore a black and white polka dot dress.  That’s when I started to wear classic clothes for training.  I learned and was open to feedback.

Video # 6: Exercises to Engage Your Audience

#Engageyouraudience #JoyceWeissVids #CommunicationTraining

Do you want to use exercises during your training or keynote to energize and engage your audience?
If so, you are in the right place.

Welcome to the video series – Secrets from a trainer to engage your audience.  This is video #6:  Using exercises to energize your audience.
Some of your audience may move a lot at work and sitting still for over an hour can be an issue for them.  The tips in this video will help you solve this challenge.

Movement Exercise #1 to Engage Your Audience

This exercise can be conducted in a training session or even a larger audience.  Ask everyone to stand up and gather into a large group.  You will give them a choice to select and they will move into 2 separate groups.  They will select one of your choices and the group will now be divided into 2 groups.

For example ask your audience:  “Is it worse to be a softy or hardnosed?”

  • Once they decide which side of the room to stand, ask them to find 2 other people in that group and discuss the reasons why they chose that side of the room.
  • Ask for volunteers to share what they discussed.
  • This is your time to shine as a facilitator.  People usually laugh during this exercise.

Movement Exercise #2 to Engage Your Audience

While they are still standing up you can do this next part or wait until they need an energy break a few minutes later.

  • At work do you tend to be sociable with your colleagues or keep more to yourself?
  • Do you find it easy or uncomfortable when giving compliments to others?
  • Think of choices that are relevant to your program.
  • You can do this a couple of times just to get everyone up and energized.
  • I find that these exercises are great discussion starters when we cover leadership or communication topics.

Video # 5: Danger! Make Sure that Your 1st Words Aren’t Boring

#VideosonAudienceEngagement #CommunicationStrategist #PublicSpeakingTraining

Do you ever wonder why certain speakers and trainers engage the audience immediately?
Do you want to learn how to engage your audience?

Welcome to my video series:  Secrets from a trainer to engage your audience.  This is video #5:  Danger:  Make sure your 1st words are not boring.  You will find 4 tips to help you engage your audience below.  Please let me know which tip “speaks” to you.

How to engage your audience Tip #1

Don’t – I repeat don’t say anything boring when you begin your program such as:

  • I’m thrilled to be speaking to you today.
  • Thanks for being here.
Everyone says comments like these and the audience could tune you out immediately and start looking at their phones.
You can definitely thank the audience for being so engaged, just not at the beginning.

How to engage your audience tip #2

Start off with a great quote or funny experience that you had while driving or flying to the program.  Your own personal stories are great to use.

How to engage your audience tip #3

Give kudos to the audience or to your introducer later on in your program.

How to engage your audience tip #4

  • Start paying attention to your favorite news anchors
  • Watch how they set up their segment
  • Listen to other trainers and speakers
  • Take notes on what works and doesn’t work
