Are you ever caught off guard during communication challenges?
Do you want to leave the table when others push you about your view about politics, religion, gender issues, sexual orientation or any other sensitive topic?
If so, please continue reading to discover my own communication challenges when others judge me rather than listen to my opinions. Yes, I have the communication strategies that I share with clients. I am also caught off guard like so many of you may feel at times.
So, Joyce How Do You Protect Yourself?
It’s exciting to have conversations with others about “hot” issues of the day. It’s not exciting when others want to push their ideas on you rather than hear what you have to say.
I’m used to certain people who want to be heard and push their ideas to others. I now prepare myself to leave the table so I don’t fall into that trap. I say, “Let’s agree to disagree and let’s change the topic.” If they continue pushing their agenda, I continue the conversation, “I enjoy discussing different values and opinions with others. I am uncomfortable when others push their agenda because this becomes a judgemental conversation and not open dialogue.” I will walk away if they still continue because life is too short to be judged by bullies or others who don’t know how to have a real conversation.
I knew I had to create a new poster when I saw this quote on respect and hope that the motivational quote below will help you during your own communication challenges.
