Did I get your attention with this title? I do hope so. There is a constant theme every time I work with clients…dealing with a negative person or department. I’m sure that most of you are shaking your head up and down thinking of someone who you know at work who spreads this negativity. I am writing this blog because I just read a terrific book about this subject. I will share the main concepts to give you some ammunition when someone tries to bring you down.
Jon Gordon is the author of The Energy Bus. It is a story about George who is VERY negative about everything in his life. His mantra is “What else can go wrong?” He has to take the bus to work for a couple of weeks while his car is being fixed. The bus driver, Joy is extremely positive and helps George see how his negativity is spreading to everyone at home and work. The first page got me hooked when George met Joy who was smiling and he said to himself, “Who smiles on Monday?” I couldn’t stop smiling myself because I was thinking of a very negative person who has the same personality as George.
Ideas from The Energy Bus
The law of attraction is very powerful.
The more we focus on something, the more we think about something, the more it shows up in our lives. Thoughts are magnetic. What we think about, we attract. What we put our energy and attention on starts to show up more in our life. If you build it in your mind, focus on seeing it, and take action, the success will come.
We can’t control the events in our life.
We can control how we perceive them. Positive energy and positive people create positive results. There is certainly a lot of negativity in the world and choosing positive energy helps us deal with the negativity. Choosing positive energy helps us deal with the negative people and negative situations that can knock us off course.
The enemy is negativity
It’s not the people who are negative, its the negativity they represent. Don’t waste your energy on those who don’t get on your bus. We get so drained by this negativity that we have no energy to move forward. Post a sign that says, “No energy vampires allowed on the bus.” Let them know they are being negative. Determine if there is a justifiable reason. Determine a course of action that will lead to individual and team success. Encourage them to get on the bus with positive energy. Give them a chance to succeed. If they don’t, actually tell them they will have to look for another job if they can’t be on the bus.

Joyce’s Thoughts
I won’t tell you what happens to George because I suggest that you purchase your own copy to find out. There is such confusion in the workplace on how to deal with negativity. I always say that everyone is responsible for the morale of the company…not just the leaders.
Don’t walk away from negative people…run! Have that tough conversation by saying, “I am frustrated hearing all the negativity because this is bringing the morale of the department down.” Have this tough conversation with the negative person face to face. Don’t wait on this, because negativity is VERY contagious.

Jon Gordon writes, “Remind yourself and your team that the goal of every journey should be to arrive at your destination with a smile on your face. It’s not just about the destination, but about the team you become along the way.” The positive team players will appreciate the fact that you had this tough conversation and addressed the negativity to reduce conflict in the workplace.
